Feature Cut: Buying Regions

I imagine that there will now be a run on the family coffers to buy all those regions that have been quietly coveted.

One suggestion for the next feature cut--attach a poll to the topic.

And, maybe give a choice between "get rid of feature A" and "Get rid of feature B" and "get rid of both features".

Tom

It's not a vote, and I don't care for majority opinions. I want feedback, and that consists of more than just "yes" or "no". Frankly, I'm more interested in the reasons for your opinions than the opinions themselves.

Adding a poll would probably have the result of people being less explicit about why they think the way they do.

I agree on the reasoning here. The only interesting option is making the region switch covertly, but I haven't seen that used much (But then it's hard to spot, I figure, and it has only been recently implemented). Still, probably too situational to keep around. Really, the more interesting option was Buying Claims, but those are removed anyway with the new Estate System.

so what do we spend our gold on now?

Page 2 already holds a good list of things.

yeah, sorry - it skipped over page 2 for me. reading them now

EDIT:  those things are pretty minimal, can be done with small amounts, or are of no benefit to your family personally.

I'd like to see some large, power-grabbing type purchase. an actual GOAL to give you reason to think of your family first.

could it be replaced by something like buying region during takeover or similar.

in middle of takeover, or when some half-secret conditions are fullfiled, buying region appear, and if succeeds, region stats remain as they were at moment of buying.

this could speed up some takeovers and integrate hostile regions quicker, but with risk of losing lot of money and with possible conflict between new lord and duke who may had planned someone else on that post.

Keep in mind that the current implementation of buying regions does not allow you to buy the lordship of a region that already belongs to your realm. It only allows you to buy a region that is not a part of your realm. It immediately becomes part of your realm and you are the new lord.

Yet, I see that option all the time while roaming around in my own realm on BT. Especially to buy off the region of my other character there.

I like the "buying votes in an election" thing. That's a really cool idea, someone should flesh it out and make it a feature request so it doesn't get forgotten.

As for "Buy Regions" - we'll remove it. Thanks all for the feedback.

Sad that you decided that way. But fine.

Actually I had a lot of fun buying a region on AT recently. Ended up making a lot of fuss and nearly breaking alliances. In the end everything worked out and it was really fun. This option allowed some "troublemakers" to make things fun for a moment.

It is a major problem that people view it as an entirely OOC thing.  However, it has led to some very interesting times.  Is it really that big a problem to get rid of it tho if it adds a bit of spice and flavor?

I think it is a shame to remove this feature (unless that's beneficial in some background coding way).  It isn't used much, but BM does not suffer from too many features or too many options, so having less wouldn't help.

And with all due respect page2 does not hold as many interesting suggestions for family gold as may seem.

QuoteRunning investments on a regular basis. Which can be a tremendous benefit to any realm.

That may be true, but they are not much fun, nor are they of much benefit to my character (except for certain amount of bragging rights of being a major investor).

QuoteUsing family gold to ransom yourself out of jail. Not sure how exactly it works, but it could basically be a 'get out of jail unbanned' card.

This one is not true.  The family gold option appears on the 3rd day as opposed to the ransom out with cash (if you have enough) that appears on the 2nd day.  So it will be a full day later and double the amount.  The extra cost would make sense if you could do more with it but you can only do less --- it will not protect you from a ban since ransoming out with cash is available a day sooner.

QuoteFame points.

True, but I think this is one time only.  I am pretty sure the family fame will not drop if you spent the fortune.

QuoteGetting financial aid from your family

This had been capped so that poor characters who need the gold can't get much (30 gold).  Mind you, the uncapped system was disbalancing, so capping was a right thing to do.  But since only the wealthy contributors (who typically don't need it) can get significant amounts of gold now, I think it is nearly useless now.

Quote- Buying family influence for equipment repairs and entertainment in foreign, non-allied realms.
- Placing a bounty on someone with family gold.
- Moving your family home. (Doesn't that take some gold form you, and some from your family?)
- Higher starting gold for your new characters.

These are true, but as has been pointed out don't require a lot of wealth or cost much.

Personally, I have been looking forward to making a risky bid and attempting buying a region for a while (haven't tried it yet, the circumstances weren't right).  So it'd be a shame to remove it for no compelling reason.  Of course the rigged election idea is a much better mechanism and would be awesome to have.  However, it also sounds non-trivial, so what are the chances that it will get implemented instead?

To clarify: The reason Tom is asking is because there is a major effort to clean up the code going on right now, and the features being put on the potential chopping block are difficult to move as part of the code clean-up.  In other words, it will make the lives of the coders easier if these things get cut.

If they add significantly to the game, they will be kept, but if it's an ambivalent situation then they'll be dropped, at least for the time being, to make fixing the rest of the game easier.

Given that interpretation this is a very minor part of the game that we won't miss too much.
