Some dudes are just jerks and would like to mess up your poo poo for no reason because it's a game with no real consequences.

True, but even in the current system those people usually get a bad rep if they beat up an adventurer for no reason. I think BM has very few malcontents because it takes so long to build up a character and the strengths of that character are very much based on reputation rather then combat stats or wealth.
