Pausing and positive balance

What happens to all the gold stashed by a character when I pause the character? Will the character lose all the gold stored in the church (returning to 0 balance) or there won't be any change (remain positive)?

Pausing a character should not affect your balance with guilds or religion.

Is it intended that Elders cannot change the rank or expel paused characters?
