How about separating it into clickable mail boxes. One is all realm wide messages. One is for local messages. One is for private messages. Then there would be an additional box for each message group you belong to.

Each mail box would have an indicator for how many messages are in it. You would click them to expand and in each one would be your reply options within that channel.
