I hope this article might be of help answering a few of the questions concerning costs, as likewise give a good insight into how armour was actually made.

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.  "Albert Einstein"

I have a hard time believing this.

Which part?

Also, how much does a B-2 bomber cost?

Ok, but that's not comparable at all. The price of a helmet then should compare to the price of a military helmet today, and the price of a sword should be compared to the price of a gun. I am uncertain what you could compare the price of a B-2 bomber with considering how crazy that price is, but I bet you could compare the price of a B-52 with the price of,  let's say, a galleon.

I think you'll come to the conclusion that the price of a helmet (a cow) does not compare to the astronomical prices we pay for miltiary equipment today. A cow, while quite expensive because of intensive breed-perfection programs, just doesn't compare to the price of modern military equipment.

A modern military helmet is ~250$ (http://www.body-armour-protection.co.uk/pasgt-combat-helmet.html?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=pricecomparison&utm_campaign=product), while cows seem to go for ~2000 $ (http://www.body-armour-protection.co.uk/pasgt-combat-helmet.html?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=pricecomparison&utm_campaign=product).
After all it's a roleplaying game.
