A large cavalry unit is fearsome. I remember when Perdan was sieging Tuchanon V in Isadril, King Sangue and his unit of about 80 Black Knights single-handedly blockaded Isadril while the Perdan army went home to refit. He trotted back and forth between the three border regions, and attacked anyone who dared to poke their head outside the city.

Crazy expensive to replace, though, after big battles, and not optimal against fortifications.

I like archers for how easy it is to get over a hundred of them without even trying, though archers are far from the strongest and from the most prestigious troops to have.

I commanded 177 archers against Daimons at one point. They weren't hitting that hard. Expected them to hit at least 1000 but they were around 700 at max. Very disappointing but they did tank Overlord's ranged attacks.

I used a decent sized archer unit when the daimons tried to sack Firbalt. On skirmish formation my archers took at least three full hits from the ranged daimons before it got wiped out. Very effective in dealing with them.

Yeah. Until Overlord brought flying cavalries shooting arrows. Bloody mongolians.

Iltaran

I'm fond of wandering around with giant infantry units. They're not the best at anything, but they're flexible. Had one unit that lasted for nearly a year on Beluaterra and got the Captain up to +15 or so skill; RIP Captain Eodred and the Iltaran Huscarls.

Big Cavalry units for that devastating charge. Those just make you giddy with joy.

I agree, they aren't that good in combat.

But cheap to get lots of, great for takeovers and looting.

Special Forces for Daimon-bashing, for sure. Doing Cavalry Charge hits in toe-to-toe melee is pretty great. I do like Cavalry, even a small, cohesive unit is pretty dangerous, but historically they were generally the kings of the battlefield anyways and I'll always cast my vote for the dark horse.

Plese provide battle reports to support this.

Wish I'd saved the Pomatim ones, where my character's 45-person unit was hitting for 1.4K-1.6K on Horrors. There was cavalry involved too but their charges weren't hitting as hard as that, and I remember my SF did the two highest non-Daimon-dealt hits in that battle.

Really it's rare that they don't hit for over 1K, though they occasionally hit for a paltry 700-800.

Edit: I've posited in a different thread that this might be due to that particular brand's hidden special ability, so I'm guessing these results are not by any means typical. Still, if you can find their niche, they totally kick ass.

Has there ever been a thread for the largest unit ever commanded?
The above is accurate 25% of the time, truthful 50% of the time, and facetious 100% of the time.

I know there was a wiki topic about the records of it.

If we did largest unit ever commanded it would need to be split up by what type of unit. 100 SF are more impressive than 100 archers.

A hell of a lot more expensive, too.
