Does anyone play go?  KGS or OGS or something? :)

If at first you don't succeed, don't take up skydiving.

Can you give some links?

Thou shall not pass!

http://www.gokgs.com/ - you play with other people who are online, time in terms of minutes
http://www.online-go.com/ - kinda like play by email, time in terms of days
http://senseis.xmp.net/?WhatIsGo - a very good resource for learning about go and current events

Would anyone like to try a game as we start learning, sometime?

is this one of them fads from reading "hikaru no go"?

i "played" go on the odd occasion with my dad when i was a kid... on one of them magnetic boards. literally played, not much clue on what i was doing.

Wow, I was just reading some of the commentary, and it sounds really intense! I can see why computers cannot play it - in comparison, chess is trite.

Sounds good but everytime I click on play on the KGS, my browser exits the page and says there was an error. And I don't care to do the game in terms of days.

If anyone wants to learn or play, I'd be happy to teach what little I know and play.  OGS or KGS or any other client. :)

KGS is a java webstart client.  If you have java on your computer you should be fine.

I used to play some years back. Nothing impressive though - I believe my KGS rating was something like 14 kyu or so, though now of course it would be nothing of the kind due to lack of practice. What is neat about go is that the handicap system enables two people of differing skills to play together and offer a challenge to both. That is, if the skill difference is not too big to nullify all sorts of handicaps.

You also start with the 9x9 board to get the basic idea, and gradually move to the larger boards. Scales up nicely.

Lovely game, but... it does draw away your time like no other game can.

Hehe, true.  With normal timing, 25 minutes each with 5 periods of rechargeable 30 seconds, a long game can take an hour or more. :)

How do you cheat at a game for which computers can't beat humans?

By the way, if anyone wants a game or two at online-go.com, I go by the same handle there. :)
