Well, yes, they are worth a lot of money. But I don't think that most of them were very large.
Though gold is heavy so they still might have needed a small chest.

Probably. If you think of coins the size of a dime, 850 is still 17 rolls of 50, which is heavy, and it's not gold.

Of course, you could have coins of different size/denomination, right? Didn't they have different size/value of coins? Spanish dubloons could be broken into 8 pieces to make 8 individual coins.

Well the value of the coins was completely dependent on the amount of precious metal within. The bigger the coin, the more value. However, the Florin was pretty much adopted as standard by most European states by 1400 ad, with almost every state issuing their own version. Other currencies tended to be made of less precious metals (silver and such)
