Baal on Dwilight became known as Ball the Betrayer after he broke Caerwyn's federation with Astrum and launched a sneak attack that caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Astrum's peasants.

Galiard on FEI is known simply as "Old Galiard". ;)

I've given quite a few people a statue in Unger, and with the statue comes a nickname. This goes from the founder of Thalmarkin to the guy who killed Overlord. Pretty much if you have achieved something really remarkable, you'll get a statue and a nickname, though it usually takes a while to come up with a good one. :)

My thought on how to receive a nickname that the game uses for your character is having people, perhaps restricted to realm-mates submit in nicknames that a person goes by, then when enough has been reached they receive the nickname. It can certainly be gamed with my current suggestion, but its the best I have so far. The idea is that if people have gave you nickname, you will then be able to use it.

But this isn't how nicknames (or epithets) were given, either. They weren't something that was bestowed upon you like a medal: they emerged as something that your peers and/or the people called you. Organically, naturally, without the possibility of being influenced or gamed (generally).

I'm all for the realm being able to create additional vanity titles, but nicknames? Nah. Plenty of characters already have nicknames, and it's fine like that. All of the proposed systems feel just too gamey.

Agreed. Nicknames are only cool if they are relatively scarce. If every character can suddenly (upon reaching certain H/P requirements) get a nickname, all of sudden they aren't very cool anymore.

Nicknames DO happen from time to time. Glaumring is STILL known as "the Mad" or "the Mad King" in the Maroccidens despite not even being king anymore. Bowie has a variety of nicknames (sure some are self-made, but if you can get it to stick and people use it, more power to ya). Vikings around the Barony/Heorot like to call Kerwin the "Coward King" because he surrendered Eston. Eston's history knows the Duke who seceded Massillion as "the Black Duke."

Those are just ones off the top of my head.

I just don't want this feature to just be rejected and its done. I want a, "flesh this out better and here are some of the current flaws, try again when you have fixed this."

You might not want that, but that's how it is. Rejected by both Tim and me, and that's pretty much a death spell.

Don't come back unless you have something that solves not only every objection posted here, but also a number we didn't get into. More likely, while you think about it in depth, you will come to the same conclusion as we have.

Blue Star

Just to note

Sordanz is Dread King, Lich King, etc. Has been since 08. Prior I don't remember him having it.

I believe CE and Sirion can easily be called the Evil Empires. Well at least from their enemies.

Suville, is called Abington obvious reason if you've been on AT a long time.

I'm sure their are a few others

Sordnaz was also known amongst some of Minas Ithil's nobility as "Sordnaz the Betrayer" and "Sordnaz the Craven" after he abandoned MI in the war.

in Eston a lot of folks used to just call him "the Old."

So the idea, in and of itself is not rejected, just the current suggestion?

We like the idea of having epithets in-game.

We just haven't found any reasonable way of implementing them that isn't absolutely riddled with problems.

I have some thoughts that might work but likely have problems, is there a thread where this has previously been discussed so I can look at other thoughts and their issues?

Tim was being nice.

Not only haven't we found one, we are very sure that we can shoot holes the size of an aircraft carrier into any proposal.

Tom, the aircraft carrier launcher is still in testing! Don't break the only prototype! :(

Seriously imagine an Aircraft Carrier-Launcher. Seriously. Think about it. Fighter jets swarming off the deck, phalanx guns blazing erratically, crewmen sliding overboard as it flies in a graceful arc through the air to impact on whatever happens to be the unfortunate target of this ridiculous weapon. (My idea, in this case)

Anyway, my idea was more like a Hero gets a nickname from the commoners (and mind you, that it would only be heroes). was that it would be ratio-based. Like achieving a certain win/loss ratio for duels, or for battles where the Hero was in command, or a certain amount of gold acquired from looting, etc. Then there would be a list of maybe a dozen or so names synonymous with the Hero's particular accomplishments, and (here is the important part), the Hero would then get to CHOOSE whether or not to accept the nickname.

I dunno... maybe we should just make the Aircraft Carrier-apult. That sounds way cooler anyway.
