Pretty much what the title says: 'Hero' Class characters receive the option of choosing a 'Nickname' to appear between their first and last names at a certain level or prestige or honor or battles fought or whatever seems like the most suitable criteria.

The 'Nickname' could appear everywhere the character's name does, or only the on letters written in-character (not on the login screen).

It could even be continent-specific; the nickname could disappear when the character emigrates to represent starting a new life.

What, like "Jakon the Conqueror" for a Hero who has won a lot of battles or "Kalon the Duellist" for someone with high Swords skills?

Yeah, I would assume that is what he means. Like "Mick the Slasher"(BoM) too.

After all it's a roleplaying game.

Rejected for practicality.

Computers just aren't very creative, and finding a fitting name that is unique is not a small task. We would end up with either names that don't really fit or with tons of "XYZ the Conquerer" people.

I assumed the player could choose the nickname. Is it really a problem if they are not unique?

Maybe there could be a dozen or so names for each category. So for battles it could be "Jakon the Conqueror" or "Jakon the Destroyer" or "Jakon the Terrible" and so on. You wouldn't have to come up with the names yourself - just give the forum the categories you'd want and we'll suggest a ton of names for you.

Nicknames aren't choosen, they are given.

That is quite true, perhaps the general bestows it upon them? Or perhaps it is still the hero choosing but it has to be okayed by the general and is roleplayed as the general giving the nickname. I already know of some fitting descriptions to describe why the hero would pick it. While I do agree that nicknames aren't chosen, they are given, I also think that the player/character should at least be able to veto a name given to him so as to prevent him from being forced to sign a nickname he doesn't like.

I do think at this point of the features development, especially with it not fitting to the feature request requirement setup, that this should be moved to development and fleshed out better there before being seriously involved. If that were done, it would still be nice if you came back to the thread and repeated to tell us what was wrong with our ideas so we can work on fixing them. Roleplay is something I feel has been lacking in the game lately, which this would help, IMO.

But this isn't how nicknames (or epithets) were given, either. They weren't something that was bestowed upon you like a medal: they emerged as something that your peers and/or the people called you. Organically, naturally, without the possibility of being influenced or gamed (generally).

This suggestion, in various forms, has come up a number of times over the years, and try as I might, I have never been able to come up with a method of applying such epithets that doesn't fall victim to one of two serious problems: being too artificial and limited, due to being applied by the game, or being too easy to abuse, due to being applied by the players.

I support Tom! Reject it.

Simply solution... RP it. If nothing else call your self some nickname that your men or your captain bestow on you.

So many reasons why that is not viable/this is preferred. To Tim, perhaps that is true, but I could think of ways to make even that work. I just don't want this feature to just be rejected and its done. I want a, "flesh this out better and here are some of the current flaws, try again when you have fixed this."

I'm all for the realm being able to create additional vanity titles, but nicknames? Nah. Plenty of characters already have nicknames, and it's fine like that. All of the proposed systems feel just too gamey.

List some characters that have nicknames then? I think a few reference Bowie as the Demon of Dwilight but I am rather sure its a self-imposed nickname.

On BT I regularly see it, though I can't claim to remember them all by heart. Many of them are slanderous, though (such as "the snake"), but many weren't. Maybe "plenty" was exaggerated, though, but I'm pretty sure Retravic, Hireshmont, and Delvin all had nicknames/epithets. Pretty sure a number of my characters had nicknames/epithets over the years... but, well, years ago.
