What exactly is the difference between Duke and Margrave titles? I always thought they were the same, but apparently not.

Margrave = Lord of a Townsland or City

Duke = Leader of a Duchy, has Lords sworn to him as vassals. Can be a Lord, be doesn't have to be.

Many times, Dukes will ALSO be Margraves. Simply because Margraves tend to be powerful, and have enough influence to be made Dukes. But, they don't have to be.

A duke no longer has to be the lord of a region; he could simply have lords sworn to him.

Or, the duke could be lord of a poor badland, and have a city and a rural sworn to him.

Etc, etc. It's just a position in the feudal hierarchy--subservient only to the king, and with lords under him.

That clears it up. Thanks guys :)
