Is this a new feature?

Dwilight / Knight/Region Density/Efficiency
« on: August 17, 2014, 02:27:50 AM »
I've said it many times that the low density is mainly due to the fundamental economics of the game. The most powerful, stable, & prolific realms always have a ratio close to 1:1 because that's how you optimize your resources.

Fewer nobles per region = more gold.

The glacier plan was an attempt to force higher density instead of changing the economics, so density is gravitating back to the natural rate. Far from being a success, the glacier made things worse because it drove players away and it didn't accomplish its intended objective.

Development / Turn not running
« on: July 24, 2014, 11:00:37 AM »
I haven't received the usual region or duchy reports for the last 3 days, and the last full turn might not have run at all. My region is Giask on Dwilight.

Development / Misprint

Not a big deal but on the 'construct temple' page (EconomyTemples.php?Action=NewTemple) it refers to my character as 'Marquess' but as a male I think it should be Margrave.

Development / Unpausing in monster country
« on: July 15, 2014, 12:28:33 PM »
I've seen a couple of times where chars who were paused presumably before the monster invasion on Dwilight are now unpausing and finding themselves in the middle of monster country and immediately getting captured. Most recently Hyperion Harte unpaused a few days ago, was immediately captured in Uppervia and is still in prison. Maybe these chars should have some kind of get out of jail free card since prison is not a very nice way to welcome someone back to the game.

My understanding is that they will be teleported to their capital when they're released, but what happens if their realm is gone, i.e. Niselur, Phantaria?

Helpline / Is this right?
« on: June 27, 2014, 06:32:07 AM »
Tax has been at the absolute minimum for probably a month and still the region report says, "Taxes are much too high, production and trade suffer." I can't make taxes any lower. All the other indicators are at or close to 100% and have been for probably 2 weeks, but production hasn't changed. I can't do civil work and I can't do a family investment until population increases, but it's been increasing about 500 peasants a day. The population has roughly doubled since the last time there was any change in production. If that's how it's supposed to work then fine, I just want to make sure it's not an glitch.

Development / Turn turning on Dwilight?

I haven't seen the usual turn reports for the last two days. Is something not working properly?

Helpline / Distance to the capital?
« on: June 13, 2014, 07:08:15 AM »
We moved the capital 4 days ago, but the regional report for all the regions, including the capital region still says "The large distance to the capital causes anarchists to prosper greatly, and the people feel as if the realm does not care about them." Is this a bug?

Helpline / Realm control
« on: June 07, 2014, 09:36:49 PM »
After several days of doing only normal police, diplomatic and courtier work in a particular region, the realm control remains unchanged. Do other actions affect realm control, such as holding court and diplomatic actions? What's most effective?

Development / Is something wrong with the player page?
« on: May 29, 2014, 10:36:22 AM »
Once I log in, the player page only loads partially. I'm not able to access any of my chars. I've tried using 2 different machines and 2 different devices. Is anyone else having this problem?

Feature Requests / Profit/cost sharing between lords and knights
« on: May 16, 2014, 01:05:37 AM »
Summary: Profit/cost sharing between lords and knights

Details: I get the impression that people dislike the food system. It’s seen as an inconvenience instead of the essential part of medieval society that it should be. Rather than scrapping the system altogether, I’m proposing the following feature request with two options.

Option 1
1.       Knights get paid a pro rata share whenever their lord sells food at the market. The knight’s share is based on the size and efficiency of their estate, i.e. how much food they contribute to the Lord’s granary. E.g.:
  • Sir Galahad and Sir Lancelot’s estates are each 25% of the region with 100% productivity. They contribute 250 bushels each to the region’s output.
  • Lord Byron’s estate is 50% with 100% productivity, and contributes 500 bushels to the region’s output.
  • Lord Byron sells 500 bushels at the market for 200 gold

The profit is divided thusly:
            Lord Byron: 100 gold = 0.5 * 200
            Sir Galahad: 50 gold = 0.25 * 200
            Sir Lancelot: 50 gold = 0.25 * 1,000
2.       The Banker receives an administration fee for executing trades on behalf of lords. The banker’s fee can either be fixed across the board, or set by the banker.

Option 2:
1.       Make granaries belong to a specific estate within the region. Knights are responsible for managing their upkeep and supply. Lords can manage granaries in vacant estates.
2.       Knights transfer food to the Lord’s granary and get paid a set rate. There are a number of possible ways to determine the rate:
    a.   Lord’s prerogative
    b.   Banker’s edict
    c.   Establish a built-in across-the-board rate for all regions
    d.   Floating rates that adjust according to seasons and other supply-and-demand factors

3.       The Banker receives administration fee for executing trades on behalf of lords. The banker’s fee can either be fixed across the board, or set by the banker.
Likewise, the lords and knights in the purchasing region would share the cost of buying food, according to their estate size, by deducting it from their tax revenue.

Benefits:
·         Provides an incentive for knights to take an estate in a rural region.
·         Ensures that the rural regions don’t get shafted when the banker sells their food.
Might increase interactions between lords and knights.

Possible Downside: Some may argue that this kind of system can be implemented by players without a feature request. The problem is that it’s not that easy to transfer gold. It would require copious record-keeping and frequent trips to the capital, making it too onerous to work. In the case of Option 2, there’s the question of what happens if a knight withholds food from the Lord’s granary. My answer is: Let them sort it out. They can argue, barter, threaten, etc. but if they can’t resolve it amicably, the lord can always have the last word by kicking the knight out and seizing control of the vacant estate.

Feature Requests / Political power score
« on: April 25, 2014, 09:04:09 AM »
Summary: The more vassals a noble has, the more power he holds. There should be a way to recognize and measure that power.

Details: A char gets his first point of political power by becoming a lord. It increases cumulatively with each knight he has under him, so for each additional knight, the increase in power in greater.
  • Lordship + 1 knight = 3 points of political power.
  • Lordship + 2 knights = 6 points of political power.
  • Lordship + 3 knights = 10 points of political power.

The duke’s political power would be the sum total of all of his lords’ political power, and a ruler’s political power would be the sum total of all of his dukes’ and all of his lords’ political power. There would also be a bonus for holding government positions. The size of the bonus would depend on the size of the realm. A marshal bonus would depend on the size of his army. Those who sponsor armies and found religions/guilds should also receive an appropriate bonus.

Benefits: Easy to code and easy to understand. It recognizes the inherent strength of the team, thereby promoting teamwork. It gives value to vassals and encourages dukes and lords to attract knights to their regions. By making the increments cumulative, it recognizes that a team is more powerful than the sum of its parts, which in turn promotes increased density.

Possible Downside: Once you get a taste of power, it changes you.

Here is a diagram to illustrate the concept. If you can't see it, click this link: http://wiki.battlemaster.org/wiki/File:Political_power_tree.png

Feature Requests / Make HP more meaningful
« on: April 25, 2014, 07:17:40 AM »
Summary: What do you learn about a character from their HP numbers? The most notoriously dishonorable characters have high honour, and the worst pariahs have high prestige. Notwithstanding certain thresholds, like 10 honour to be appointed lord, 20 to run for election, etc. it has no practical use.

Details:
Option 1.  Instead of losing HP, create a separate index for negative HP. Currently you can lose honour for acts such as abandoning your unit, looting, and probably some others. Instead of, or in addition to losing a point of honour, they should gain a point of dishonour. Likewise for prestige, they gain a point of humility.

Option 2. Alternatively, show current HP relative to the highest HP ever achieved by the character. If a char has 100 honour and his highest level was 150, then you know that he’s prone to dishonorable acts. Similarly, 45 prestige out of 90 shows, well, how the mighty have fallen. This has the added advantage that it allows for redemption, meaning it will show if a char loses HP, but he can work to gain it back and erase the memory of his dishonour and humiliation.

Benefits: It makes HP meaningful and practically useful. As a member of the nobility, your reputation should precede you. When a new noble with high negatives joins your realm, it’s the equivalent of meeting someone with a bad reputation. The current HP system only showcases the good, not the bad.

Possible Downside: Makes it harder for scoundrels to move to a new realm with a clean slate.

Roleplaying / Who are the best writers in BM?
« on: April 22, 2014, 05:50:47 AM »
I was thinking about organizing a fun competition to judge who are the best writers in BM. I'm thinking players can submit their best roleplays, orders, inspiring battle speeches, drunken ramblings, sermons, insults, wiki pages, zingers, famous last words, etc. I'll appoint a panel of 3 distinguished judges (or 1 jester and 2 illiterates) to painstakingly evaluate the entries (with or without set criteria), then count the bribe money and declare with unquestionable authority which written pieces they hate the least in each category. We'll talk about prizes in due time. Right now all I can think of is a nice wiki trophy crafted by the finest wiki artisan in the land. Submissions can come from the writer him/herself, or from an admirer of their work (as long as it doesn't run afoul of the rules). If anyone thinks this is an interesting idea, please post your support below, and feel free to include an entry. If anyone thinks this is a !@#$e idea, please post your expressing of utter contempt, and feel free to include an entry. If anyone what like to be involved in organizing excitement, as a judge or the guy who holds the judge's puke bucket, please say so below or in a private msg including your CV with at least 3 references. N.B fake CVs and references must be entertaining.

The entries don't have to be strictly roleplays. It can be any RP, letter, marching orders, some graffiti you painted around your neighbourhood (as long as it's BM graffiti), and whatever else you think is worthy of judgement.

Be mindful of the forum code of conduct, namely part 2 about posting in-game messages. http://forum.battlemaster.org/index.php/topic,5071.msg119080.html#msg119080
