Dwilight / Re: What makes a D'haran?
« on: May 25, 2013, 08:54:09 AM »
I believe the MC is extremely important, and it sets D'hara apart from other realms. Its existence pretty much guarantees that ambitious noblemen or noblewomen will have their voice heard in the house of Lords. Even if you disband it, I believe a position like the Chairman should be kept. It's politically interesting for the knights because it's a stepping stone of responsibility that is short of a lordship that can be reached during the long times between chairs emptying, and it's inconsequential enough to be used to experiment with. Perhaps it could be rebranded as something like 'Secretary to the Knighthood' or something.

Imagine spending your first week of Battlemaster in the last week of Luria Vesperi. By day 2 Miranda was ordered to take an estate somewhere and imprisoned by Solarians and unable to talk to anybody. What really sold Battlemaster to me as a good game was Rynn and Ismail welcoming me and engaging me with D'haran politics in a limited way after I was left penniless and most of my men starved to death on a desperate flight to the Dragon Isles. If the midlands council is to be disbanded, ensure that what made it good is not lost.

Wat?

Nietzschean existentialism BM!

^Isn't the current BM just Nietzschean existentialism with medieval flairs anyways?

I think Dada BM would be more interesting. We all try to act anti-battlemaster and all of our roleplays and messages would be ascii art and/or nonsense poems that determine wars between realms named 'Metaphysical Depravity' and 'Gestalt as Function'. There would be lots of 'Duels of Suprematist Composition' in which duelists would strike the poses of geometric shapes, and the one that is more ingĂ©nue shall be declared both the winner and non-present.

Feature Requests / Re: Daily Local Reports
« on: May 23, 2013, 10:15:49 PM »
I agree with your sentiment. I believe however there is a space between uninteresting to a player and impractical for a player to out of the their way to roleplay that the game could be written to fill. Whether something like this would be interesting or not would depend entirely on the creativity of ourselves and the developers in this matter.

Feature Requests / Daily Local Reports
« on: May 22, 2013, 01:18:02 PM »
I apologize in advance if this has been suggested before and shot down.

Expanded Daily Locale Roleplay Reports:

Summary:

In the manner of a Lord's Regional Report, I believe a shorter similar daily report containing minor details about the region a character is currently in or traveling through would enrich Battlemasteria and add both roleplay opportunities and flavor to the events therein.

Details:

Specifically, I believe events that ARE NOT important in mechanical terms ought to be reported so as to add a dimension of 'the world exists beyond the features the players touch'.

Events that could be present in my interpretation: Overall events such as the weather, the phase of the moon, farm descriptions not pertaining to bushels harvested that day, whether a peasant market is being held that day, church being held that day etc.

Events that DO NOT fit in my interpretation: Battle reports, peasants complaining about taxes, anything your strange uncle who hangs out with rebels would tell you, monster presence, anything that would be in a Regional Report, anything that only reports an economic.

The primary emphasis would be to have a pseudo-random extended dictionary of potential events or situations that are indexed on a daily basis. This is a super rough idea of what such a report could look like:

Local Report for Laraibina

  • Overcast skies cause sporadic rains to fall.
  • There is a new moon in the sky.
  • There are many people traveling on the roads today.
  • The local sheriff is hosting an archery tournament for the peasants.
  • Many houses lay derelict due to a small population.
  • Some small distance away from the road, a large patch of burned trees scars the landscape.

If implemented in a way that such events are not 'hard coded', expansion of this system could be relatively easy. Categorically, purely local events ought to be linked to their region type while global things such as the phase of the moon ought to work similar to the season's ticker. Weather could be thought of in larger bunches, such as rain could descent an entire part of the continent. Perhaps the northern and southern parts of the world are more prone to snow, hale, and rain than equatorial continents? Maybe it always is cold in Beluaterra?

Benefits:

1. A report like this would be sent to all players. This could especially enhance the experience for newer players with less to do and people who like to roleplay.

2. This would make Battlemasteria feel more alive and real. In my experiences, players tend to be somewhat selfish when it comes to what they roleplay about. This would be the Battlemaster equivalent of public highways or utilities: the community and developers would contribute to the roleplaying and believability of the world in places where it is not exciting for players to do so.

Possible Exploits:

In once sense there are no exploits, but there are certainly a few issues to contend with in this feature request.

1. The elements of the Local Report ought not to interfere with events players are better off roleplaying. For example, a note that is specific about a religion's daily rituals or practices ought to be avoided. However, if the region has a place of worship a note about peasants in attendance or the smell of a free loaf of bread is acceptable because it is a universal feeling or experience.

2. I naively assume implementing it would not be difficult in technical terms because it is only a report, but this would be extremely demanding on the coders in terms of getting a large enough library of possible events to where the report doesn't just seem like a stagnant random set of 3 things with 3 possible outcomes. Also, if any report is dependent on the information of a region (as in a badlands would have fundamentally different things happen in it than a city as is true in real life) nasty conceptual complexities would have to be sorted.

3. "Local Report" is a bad name for this thing, but I can't think of another at the moment. Someone would need to think of another.

4. Actually gathering all of the possible report types would require a lot of suggestion and vote from the community and creative thought from the developers. Everyone here is a volunteer of this wonderful game, and coming up with a resource bank of events is conceptually challenging for anybody.

Thank you for reading!  :)

BM General Discussion / Re: Medal?
« on: May 22, 2013, 11:56:21 AM »
I have been playing Battlemaster for 4 months, and I have about 3 medals.

People generally give medals if you either roleplay something exceptionally well, or exceptionally funny if you aren't in a position of power like me.

In particular, my stupid commoner was given 2 when he tried to run as a consul for Sanguis Astroism, and then later tried to be declared 'The Star King'; hehehe.

I believe the beverage most representative of D'hara would be Dr. Pepper because the people are kindly and sober.

BM General Discussion / Re: Infiltrator Day 1: Already Imprisoned
« on: April 29, 2013, 12:13:15 AM »
My character is one of the best infiltrators on EC and let me tell you how often you can get caught.

Low risk operations? I call that bull!@#$. Doesn't matter it is low or high you will get caught soon enough.

Travelling without any man? You must be crazy. Patrol guards can run faster than you can so give up on not getting caught.

Stabbing a guy with 5 men? Doesn't matter how good you are when you are fighting two or more armed men.

If that is the case, when do you choose to conduct operations? It is on the command of others or under your own volition? Is it really so risky to do anything, regardless of the amount of risk the player volunteers to take? What did you to do make your character so effective, because at the moment it seems as if an infiltrator has difficulty having much effect.

My infiltrator has admittably been deported twice already, but I feel exaggaration is happening. I've been succesful in stealing a decent amount of gold, sometimes multiple times a turn, just have to stay away from regions with walls. In general infiltrators are much safer staying away from regions with walls. (I too learned this the hard way)

I suggest keeping the infil class but not acting with it unless there is a distinct opportunity, there's no real "must" to go solo ninja-ing. Hire some men, run along with the army, train infiltration and sword fighting every now and then, and when your greedy courtier-of-a liege lord who spends his time counting his coins at the home estates without a unit raises your Lord's share a bit too much, stab the bastard in the back. Repeatedly.

If you're lucky you might find a wealthy Duke who'd offer to sponsor your training for future services rendered, but then, not all Dukes are as interested in having a knife in their service as amusement would demand.

I think you are right; especially if I am deported or banned at the moment. Why not become a hired hitman, with all benefits included.

I was initially under the impression that infiltrators were solo-ninjas, but would you say they are more like assassin tools for the wealthy?

BM General Discussion / Infiltrator Day 1: Already Imprisoned
« on: April 27, 2013, 02:27:20 AM »
Basically today I learned that I am a giant noob when it comes to infiltration. Getting bored of the realm one of my characters play, I decided to stray from the light and take the dark path. Excited at this I thought, "hmm, why not try something greedy and different as opposed to academy sitting today?" I decided my character would try to steal a little tax gold at the least-risky settings in the capital city. I was caught and imprisoned, and now I think I stand to lose my lordship and be banished.

No complaints; I think this is an awesome opportunity to be cast off from the comfortable and to roleplay anger, poverty, and vengeance. It also gives me a good excuse to join wars against my own former realm. But, I want to ask the BM forum what a completely poor, imprisoned noob like myself ought to do and think about when infiltrating with low stats.

I checked the wiki for this sort of thing, and while it is generally helpful it lacks a conception of how difficult or risky something truly is.

Again, in no way am I complaining about what happened to me or the infiltrator class. I think it is awesome that Battlemaster has a good variety of classes that are both noble, useful, or nihilistic and greedy.

Development / Re: Ability to go to Tournaments
« on: April 23, 2013, 04:08:42 AM »
Well the main alternative to warriors are adventurers, courtiers, and priests. Besides spectating, organizing, and blessing contestants, why would any of those belong competing in a tournament?

Unless you watch Heath Ledger's "A Knight's Tale", of course...

Development / Re: Prestige
« on: April 23, 2013, 03:47:28 AM »
I don't think it's a major impediment, except for a hardcore player with a new character.

I was appointed lord on two of my characters, one with 2 prestige through election and the other 3 with appointment. You can pretty much get that by fighting monsters once or twice; sometimes even the same monsters in two if the group is big enough.

When it comes to rulership positions, general spots, and more important roles I think it's good to have a barrier; it protects long-established characters from active younglings seizing their positions out of waiting or turn--at least for a little while.

BM General Discussion / Re: Daylight Savings Time?

Ah, if thats true then I am just being America-centric. I guess that strange hour drag effect would only happen in the West twice a year.

BM General Discussion / Daylight Savings Time?
« on: March 11, 2013, 05:33:14 AM »
Everybody's clocks seemed to move forward one hour, but I don't think Battlemaster's time changed. At least it did not today. Should it? Or are we going to be very medieval about time and say 'there was no daylight savings back in the 13th century' and leave it at that? Or is daylight savings not internationally recognized enough to be put into an international game?

It's not a big deal, just a little inconvenient to change the times I look at Battlemaster during the day.

BM General Discussion / Re: BM needs a population boost
« on: March 31, 2012, 09:56:04 PM »
Though I would want someone who doesn't do this for the first time. It shouldn't end up taking more time than doing it myself.

I certainly agree, no freshman should be doing this. I am going to put up ads around campus to see if there are any experienced designers who want the work. Is there any specific information you want me to say about the qualifications of the designer and the work expectations you have for them, and do you want me to screen people who answer the ads before referring them to you? Or, do you want me to refer them to you directly?

Actually, I am student in an art school. Among the majors is graphic design, and a major component of that is web design.

Do you actually want me to put up an advertisement through the residence office life? I am sure somebody would be willing to do the work for free.

I think one issue that BattleMaster might have with keeping new players/etc. is the way it looks visually.

I know this is mostly a text-based game, but the web design in many ways looks ancient and unappealing. For players who give the game a chance, I think it stops becoming a problem. For new players though, BattleMaster doesn't look nearly as fun as it really is.

A sleeker, designed look to the home page and the principle menus could help.

I can't think of the number of times I tried to show a like-minded friend the game and their first thought was 'clunky wall of text--pass'.

I don't think BM is that at all, but it looks like it to people who don't know better.
