I'm officially announcing the start of beta testing.
That means two things:
a) Please test and play with all aspects of the game
b) There will be a reset on launch, so feel free to trade spells, spend XP, etc.
Is it intended that I'm unable to cast Power Level 3+ spells if I have both the Base and Intent at Skill Level 1, and enough Energy on hand? Meaning that there are minimum requirements for Base/Intent Levels based on Power Level, on top of Energy/Concentration requirements?
It is possible to submit a spell, look at the details and get the spell formula w/o having a GM grant it.
Its even possible to get a spell that hasn't been approved yet.

I noticed that, too. I show a power level 4 spell where I have a 1 in both the intent and base skills and enough energy and concentration. Shouldn't I be able to cast it?
Change password still doesn't work.
It is in the game guide. Your skill in intent determine what spells you can cast. A power level 4 harm/fire spell requires harm at level 4 to cast. Base determines how much the casting cost you. Essentially, you divide the power level by the base to figure the cost. So a power level 4 harm/fire spell costs 4 to cast if your fire skill is at 1, 2 to cast if your fire skill is at 2 and so on. That is how I recall it at least...

Oops, you're right; I overlooked this part under Skills section:
'There is a hard limit determined by the skill level in that no magician can create an effect with a power level beyond the sum of his levels in the skills required.'
I guess that means (Base Level + Intent Level = Maximum Power Level) for spells of that particular Base and Intent

A power level 4 harm/fire spell requires harm at level 4 to cast.
Ouch. I missed that. I guess I better start figuring out some 1,1,1 spells or my character won't be able to cast anything initially.
So... Where do we post story contributions for this beta run?
I spent my experience kind of dumb like so I wanted to see if I could give the skill back and get the exp in exchange. So, just for fun, I told the game to spend -20 exp on my fire skill and I now have -20 out of 20 exp required for the next level in fire!

You mentioned a system whereby we could "officially" enter spells into the database so that it processes additional experience gain for the casting of spells. Is this system active right now or not? I can't seem to find any way to access something of this sort.
Also, I can also report the change password problem still persisting.
Edit: It is amazing how this sort of thing appears instantly after I write it down...

Hehe, yes, I just finished it. :-)
Well I will post a couple here so people can try using that new feature.

So, there's a spell that uses Mind and Perceive. I have Mind 4 and Perceive 3. The spell "power" is 27".
I have 7 Energy.
When I view the spell details it says: "you can not cast this spell because your skill levels are too low (total of 7, but need at least 27)". Shouldn't that say I can't cast it because I don't have enough Energy?

It only shows you the first error.
Also, the view_spells page is intended to be time-independent, so it won't show you concentration and energy, because those change.
Are we going to get an option to form a council once the game launches?

You
do have enough Energy for it, because Energy requirement is Power Level divided by Base Skill Level, which in this case is (PL 27/Mind 4) => 6.75 Energy cost. But ability to cast a spell, regardless of current Energy/Concentration, is firstly dependent on the sum of Base Skill Level and Intent Skill Level, which in this case is (Mind 4 + Perceive 3) => 7 max Power Level spell using Mind+Perceive that you can cast.
The parser will now verify that I can cast some spells but I can not "commit" anything.

correct, that part isn't yet finished.

Then I totally don't understand this at all. Why can't I cast it? I need a total of 27 skill levels? What skill levels?

I've read through the site several times, and there's nothing on the site that I have found that would explain that.
I am pretty sure the combined number of your base and intent must equal the power level.
If you are trying to cast a fire ball (harm+fire) which has the power level of let's say 6,
then you need to have harm 3 and fire 3 or harm 2 fire 4, harm 1 fire 5 etc. Well at least that is how I calculate.

Skills are grouped in the same categories as the magical effects they control, intents and bases. The higher the skill of a magician in a category, the more he can do and most importantly, the less energy he requires to do it.
There is a hard limit determined by the skill level in that no magician can create an effect with a power level beyond the sum of his levels in the skills required.
