On the help page sentries are supposed to fight better in their own regions, move slower, and suffer morale drops when out of their regions. What exactly is this "better fighting"? I have definitely seen slower movement, but I have also not seen any significant drops in morale even when I once moved sentries hundreds of miles away from home.
What about mercenaries? I know they need more gold, and they supposedly deal better with being moved far from home. What about combat effectiveness?
Sentries get a minor CS boost when defending their own regions, I believe.
Mercenaries simply have less morale issues far away from home. No other benefits.

I think it's a 20% increase, but I'd have to test.

Sentries get a 10% increase in CS at home.
Is it solely for battles where they are the defenders, or do attacking sentries also get the bonus?
Only defending.
Updated on the wiki, great.

Yay! Always good to have wiki be correct. :)
Heroes can set units as Regular Army, Mercenaries, and Vanguard. I can understand why they can't have police units, but what prevents them from having sentries? Is it...unheroic to stand guard over something?
Yeah, guard duty at the local garrison isn't very heroic.
