Title: Diplomacy: The Game of International Intrigue
Post by: Perth on November 07, 2011, 11:50:08 PM
Both myself and Vellos have a deep and never-ending love for a board game called Diplomacy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_%28game%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_%28game%29)

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/483/diplomacy (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/483/diplomacy)

It is a strategy board game that is completely unique. The game hinges upon, you guessed it, Diplomacy. All moves are simultaneous, there are no dice or cards and thus no element of randomness in the combat mechanics and interpersonal skills and negotiating is a key part of the game. The rules and mechanics of the game are simple to understand and it has been equated with Chess in it's simplicity, but difficulty to master.

Now that I think about it, this game is probably very much suited to the likes of Battlemaster players, as we all know we all like to talk and plot a lot and that is pretty much what this game is all about. However, the one downfall of the game (though not really a downfall at all, for it makes the game so perfect) is that you need 7 players to play the real deal full game. Vellos and I are lucky to be able to pull together 7 players to play this amazing game a couple times a year. However, this requirement has lead to it being fairly popular online and through postal or e-mail play.

Vellos and I play on this site:

http://webdiplomacy.net (http://webdiplomacy.net)

If anyone is interested, I can set up a private match for BM players and we can see if we can get a game going. It's really a ton of fun and can be very addicting (I built a 36" across custom board for the game this summer  8) ) so I thought maybe some of you would like to check it out.

I'm definitely up for this, playing a private match online or whatever.

Plus, I know playing against the two of you will be quite intriguing indeed.

I've always been intrigued by this game, but I've never played it. Do you know anyplace I can get the board game? Do they still make this game, or do I have to buy it second hand?

It is a fun game. But it tends to get stale if you play a lot against the same people. The key is to keep adding new players to the mix.

A lot of board game specialty shops carry it and if not can certainly order in to the store for you if you ask. I see the most recent version around with decent frequency; I've even seen it at a board game kiosk in the mall.

I would suspect your could probably find the latest version for a pretty decent price on Amazon or eBay. Though the older versions get pricey because they're seen as collector's items.

I find online versions to be more enjoyable, personally, as the game can take quite a while to finish.

This is very true. 8-12 hour stints are not impossible for face-to-face games of Diplomacy!  :o

Thanks for the information. I've searched around for Diplomacy, but most stores only offer Risk or Monopoly. I asked around and several people never heard of the game. Its probably around, but I just have to look harder! Might simply buy online.

Anyway, I signed up for the WebDiplomacy. If we get enough players, I'm up for a game.

Basically, you have a tab for each person where you can talk (chat) to them individually and there is also a global tab where your message is sent to everyone. You can talk as much as you want, whenever you want.

You enter your moves below the map. Move, Hold, Support Move, Support Hold and Convoy. They are drop down boxes so it's pretty intuitive. Although, you can still make errors in moves, so don't think it protects you from making mistakes, always double check your orders (for instance make sure you're supports TO and FROM are always want you want and if you do any convoys you'll want to ensure both units orders match up).

When you've finished your orders you can click "Ready" (producing a green check mark) which will lock them in. Once everyone has selected "Ready" the turn will roll regardless of whether the full day and a half has run or not. If you click "Save" (producing the gray check mark) instead, you're moves will be saved, however it will not allow the turn to roll until the full time has run out for the turn. Essentially, you use save if you want to make sure you don't end up missing the turn, but you may be waiting on someone to respond to something, or you think you may change your mind, etc.

Other than that, that's about it! ... I think.

Awesome thanks, so the game is played anonymously right? We won't know who is what country correct?

Also, Did you plan it for the game to begin when the BM "day" changes (ie. not turns but day) or was that pure coincidence?

For this game, yes. You actually have option the check anonymous or not when you set up the game. I like anonymous when playing with people you know, because it provides a little more depth to the game I think. However, it is diplomacy and anything goes in negotiating so nothing is stopping you from telling someone else who you are (are you could lie even). It is also usually easy if you're used to playing someone (especially since we all play something like BM together) to figure out who they are purely by how they write/communicate. For instance, it usually isn't hard for me and Vellos to figure out who each other is. But, knowing, this you can alter how you write/communicate with people to try to fool them, etc. Or not, maybe you want them to know, maybe you want to try to get them thinking your someone else. It's all up to, it's the beauty of the game.

Also: the game will go faster if you click "ready" on your orders after you saved them. DOn't do it if you're still debating your orders or diplomacy, of course; but, if we're all done with orders, click "ready," and the turn will change as soon as the last person clicks it.

There is no reason to not let people discuss their moves when this is in fact diplomacy. It's not Risk or War Islands after all. Yes, if everyone is done planning then they should of course click ready, but if not there is no reason to rush. Beginning moves can be very important for certain nations.

Or, realistically, 4, because Germany is largely inactive.

And it appears the only hostility is... England vs. Russia? France gets support from Italy and England and does not contest their borders. Russia and Italy seem content to work together as well.

Organized early collusion.... meh. No fun.

Perhaps its just because this is my first game of diplomacy, but isn't working with other nations required in order to even have a remote chance of winning?

Yes, but it's rare that you have so clean an interlocking system of alliances. France, Italy, England all working together, Russia and Italy working together. Combined with largely inactive Austria and Germany and peacenik Turkey, it's a very awkward game.

Russia + Italy is not uncommon. I think France/England/Italy is more a product of a slumbering Germany than anything.

Russia Italy is uncommon IMHO. Not unheard of, but not common. And it's only possible because of a very nice France.

What is odd is for Russia-Italy to be a very firm alliance while Turkey doesn't ally with Austria apparently. Balkans because a cluster!@#$ real fast.

This seems like a fairly accurate assessment in my opinion. I'm sure this game would have gone drastically different if Germany had been actively pursuing at least a goal of some kind.

I had been, but things got complicated in real life. I had to move out all my computer stuff to a new place, so all I had was my phone for a while, and it's hard to keep up with all the stuff I do with just a phone. Also, could we have turns last longer next time? As it is, I practically have to log in every day, and I can't do that.

Don't sweat it, We're just stating that the game may have been different if you had had more time.

Yes, I would have been a moderate size power in the middle of the continent, controlling all the Germanic-populated lands. Which was my goal, to control the Germanic heritage lands. Then set you all against each other. ^_^

Russia-Italy is pretty common, they very often work together to take down Austria.  It's conceivable but not as common for them to work together against Turkey.  The situation we've seeing in the game isn't terribly common, though, mostly because of the inactivity.

You can look at previous games I've played to see how games generally go: http://webdiplomacy.net/profile.php?userID=10339

I'm fine doing 2 or 3 day turns as well.

The great thing about it is even with 2 or 3 day turns, turns sometimes move faster when everyone is available, as once everyone "finalize" their orders the turn will go.

Let's go with 3 day turns. More fun if we know everyone can play to the fullest. And won't allow mistakes to ruin the game as easily.

Go to the link provided earlier in the thread to the website we use. It has a nice little set of rules and "how to play" for you to follow. Its not a ton but it is a good start. Mainly, its kind of like battlemaster, if you've ever been a ruler. Except more personal control of the military aspect.

Well, I shouldn't give away all my secrets, but this will give you a decent intro to strategy and how to play: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Diplomacy

There are more in-depth and better guides, but I'll make you work to find them.  It's not terribly hard, and I can't just give away where to find the secrets . . . of course, simply knowing the strategy won't make you a great player, but it will certainly help.

Best strategy: Have Perth defend your northern border. Apparently it works for both Coria and Italy.

Lol nice. Have all of you been rulers before or currently are?

I have read some of that wiki but I don't think I will read much more until we start playing so I can read things specific to my country. (I read the rules, the strategies 1-3 and 7. Saw the alliances page and got scared away by the huge amount of info the page.)
P.S.How long do you think the game will last with 3 day turns?

I doubt we've all been rulers. Perth and I have been (he still is) and our characters interacted, and still do.

The game can last anywhere from a month-3 months with 3 day turns, I'd expect. However, if everyone is active, the turns could go much faster than that, and we could see a fast game as well.

It's HOW you play the game that takes a long time to perfect.  ;)

You have to wait until the end of the autumn turn before it is officially yours. So if you take it in the spring, you have to stay on the region if you want to keep it at the end of the fall.

After everything thats been going on with Allison in Sanguis Astroism lately I have learned that dustole would be great for this game. (I had heard she was crazy and everything but not seen her political side  until just recently.)

Lol. Dustole gets one powerful character then thinks he rules the world. Bring it.

I have tried that one once or twice.

For the really epic, look at this one: http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=52

The really begins one are prone to people not submitting orders, however. And are usually just to confusing for me to keep up with, so I do not prefer them.

I always thought those big maps are not worth the effort. Just is more confusing for minimal gain in strategy and fun. I'd prefer just a normal game.

Actually, you can set it to wear you can choose your country.

However, the traditional way is random. Plus it's more fair/fun.

One billing of the game has always been that the only random part of the game is what country you play, as opposed to other strategy games like risk where die rolls determine a lot of the game.

The last game was about a month and half. It takes so long because we have three days to do orders which sometimes is necassary but sometimes not so it is speeded up.

Played this once at uni with friends from my badminton club.

It was an amazing experience.

But since it lasted hours and hours, and since the amount of backstabbing of each other seemed likely to make enemies out of friends, we pretty much all agreed it was brilliant but we never wanted to play it again.  And I never have done.  Once was quite enough, though I am very glad I played it the once.

It has been ages since I have last played diplomacy. The best experience is to do it in person, but who has time for such things these days? The second best option is to do it online when you know the other players will stick with it to the end, no matter how badly they (or I) get beaten. If there is another game starting, I would love to join.

Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Game of International Intrigue

I change my playstyle each game, so that's not an issue. For me, at least. The first game I was in I played as Germany, and was trying to expand Germany to all German speaking regions, then just keep that size for the rest of the game. If I hadn't been inactive occasionally it probably would have worked. The second game as the Turks I tried to get everyone to fight each other. (didn't work out, that strategy)

This game I have something big planned, but I'm not telling anyone what that is.

Noooo.

Risk is just that: Risk. It's a game of chance using dice.

Diplomacy is fundamentally different: nothing is random except for the country you play.

I play to lose, but I never try my hardest  to accomplish that goal.

That goal has a funny way of accomplishing itself, though. :(

This game is turning out very well. I wonder what will happen. Hopefully the alliances will turn out relatively balanced.

It's only turning out well if you're playing Austria or Germany.  All the other powers are in a lot of trouble right now, but it will be hilarious if Austria's supporting Turkey just causes them to lose later.

Did the third game get off the ground? I only ever joined BM 3 and BM 4, but I thought a BM 5 had been created at some point.

I was Turkey the second game and was ganked early on. I therefore am glad that Turkey is doing well.

I played loads of Diplomacy in the 90's. Got third place in the Swedish Championships one year. Played Turkey on the final table which never tend to win against experienced players nor get eliminated. Apart from my third place I recieved a diploma for the most successful Italy during the tournament and for the best executed backstab.

As I recieved three diplomas and the winner only one I to this day maintain that I was the true champion of diplomeacy...

Hey Perth, you should join! I won't be playing, so you could be sure the game wouldn't end with me betraying you. (Honestly, no clue you were Austria this past game. Really funny though when I found out)

Well we have all the players we need now that BarticaBoat and Perth said they will play. Next matter, Perth would you be so kind as to make the game or would you prefer me to make it? Also Perth, if you are making it I think it best to PM the link and password so all of those who signed up may join. (So there isn't people joining without posting and some of those who posted don't get to play.)

To be fair, Atamaran politics is your fault.

I take no blame for constantly being on CE's side when they are stagnating the continent with their massive alliances and powerblocs which I wholly benefit from due to them keeping my realm alive while I'm weak.

Persia and Carthage are new players, so they're still learning. :)

Can I get an account sitter? I am only in one game and if you want to be on minimally it will be like 30 seconds since I am not doing so well in that game. I am no longer in BM 4 so you don't have to worry about me being in one of your games. I will be gone from Saturday through sometime on Monday, but you only need to long once after the sunrise of Sunday as right now is build phase and I have no builds ,  and its a two day phase. PM me if interested.
