Completely dependent on how it is used.

Why would the hyphen part alone make then unmedieval....?

If they are double-names, I think. I'm pretty sure that is a modern invention thanks to feminism (because it is so patriarchal-oppressive for the woman to lose her name upon marriage...)

I've looked a bit for the history of hyphenated names, and didn't find much yet. This, however, is too funny not to share even if it's not medieval:

So apparently the hyphen is unmedieval, although this says nothing about double names.

However, I wouldn't worry about it. The language of BM is english, not Ye Olde Englische.

Some of the uses of hyphens are for stuff like "De-Legro". Not sure if the hyphen was always there, though, but regardless, that should be fine by any standards.

Some Spanish cultures have a tradition of double surnames, and children take part of their surname from each parent. No idea how long the tradition has been around though.

I figure that since BM is gender-neutral, using modern naming standards is 100% fine.
