Title: [Forum Game] Werewolf IV: The Heist
Post by: Velax on September 03, 2012, 12:33:18 PM
The Rules

This is a variant of Werewolf, a game of paranoia, deception and betrayal.

A team of Bank Robbers is planning a heist of the main branch of one of the biggest banks in London. They've been planning this for weeks and are almost ready to pull it off and make themselves millionaires. But their Hacker has discovered something horrifying - the London Police have managed to plant a number of Undercover Agents in the Bank Robbers' gang to gather evidence on them and have them arrested.

The Bank Robbers outnumber the Undercovers, but they don't know who to trust. Meanwhile, the Undercovers know their fellow agents and can work together to even the odds. The Undercovers want to have enough Bank Robbers arrested to reach parity so they can arrest the rest of the gang with impunity; the Bank Robbers want to end the threat of the Undercovers by uncovering their secret identities and murdering them.

Every day the Bank Robbers get to choose one person to murder, as punishment for the nightly arrest. The Bank Robbers must vote to choose the person they think most likely to be responsible. With their vote, the Bank Robbers can reveal much about the motives of others. But they must be cunning, or more than a little lucky, if they are to escape justice and pull off their heist.

Standard Big Rules

All roles will be handed out after the last person signs up, with all players receiving a PM containing their role and (known) traits. The game will then proceed to a night deadline.

The game is divided into two periods - night and day. For practical reasons these two periods are run concurrently, from one update till the next. Each update is 24 hours apart. Both the Undercovers (privately) and the Bank Robbers (publicly) vote to decide who to murder every day. At 5pm forum time each day, the murder will occur first, then the arrest. Once the arrest has been done, players are free to vote again.

In the case of a tie in murder voting, two or more may be murdered. Undercovers can also choose not to arrest anyone on a particular night.

There are other roles that can be given to players, aside from Bank Robber or Undercover. These will be explained later. Except for Bank Robber and Undercover, not all Roles may be in every game.

There will be only one team of Undercovers. They win if they manage to reach parity with the rest of the gang. The Bank Robbers win if they manage to execute all the Undercovers.

Standard Undercover Rules

§1A. - You sign up to the game by requesting so in a post in this thread.
§1B. - No new players will be admitted after the game has started, except to substitute for another player.
§1C. - You may at any time be substituted out by requesting so in the thread.
§1D. - Failure to vote on two occasions will lead to immediate substitution.

§2A. - Players will vote daily. See Rule 1D.
§2B. - Invalid votes (Voting for Game Moderator/Ghosts) will not be accepted and be considered to be in violation of Rule 2A.
§2C. - In the event of a tie, all tied players will be executed.
§2D. - The player(s) with the majority of votes at deadline are considered dead. They will not reveal any inside information after the deadline. The presumed dead player(s) should post in purple text until their true role is confirmed.

§3A. - Orders and votes submitted after deadline are ignored.
§3B. - Orders (scans, hunts, et cetera) are sent to the Game Moderator via PM.
§3C. - Players are responsible for any Private Messages missed due to inbox being full.

§4A. - Spectators and ghosts may comment, but never suggest a course of action, reveal any new information (including vote counts) or discuss any details of their former character, in the case of ghosts. Preferably spectators will comment only in a manner tangential to the actual game. This rule is super duper important, and if you break it, terrible and awful things will happen to you!
§4B. - When doing ghost/spectator commentary, please use a non-white colour.

§5. - Alliances and Feuds which aren't based on your characters or roles in the game between players are forbidden. Alliances and Feuds which continue from one game to another undermine the whole idea of the game.

§6A. - The Game Moderator has the last word on all matters.
§6B. - If the Game Moderator makes a mistake (e.g. with the vote count, hunt/scan orders), if critical information has been revealed, the mistake will be kept.

§7A. - No PMs allowed, except by Undercovers.

§8A. - Voting must be done in the following way. Write "VOTE" and the person you are voting for in bold text.
§8B. - If you wish to un-vote someone, write "UNVOTE" and their name in bold text.
§8C. - In case of re-voting without un-voting the original vote will be the counted vote.
§8D. - Do not edit votes after posting them. If you make a mistake, unvote and revote in a new post.
§8E. - Votes should be oversized or clear of other text to ensure they are not missed by the GM.

§9. - The GM can and will remove players if the GM believes they are adversely affecting the game, for example through failure to fulfil voting obligations or deliberate violation of the rules. This will be done through the use of killing the player's role, or using substitutes, if they are available. All such decisions are made solely at the discretion of the GM.

§10. - Failure to vote on 2 occasions without prior notice will result in automatic substitution. If no substitution have been found 6 hours before deadline, the player will be auto-executed at next deadline.

NOTE: For this game an NPC will be the first arrested.

Deadline

The deadline of this game is 17:00 GMT+2 ( <- Forum Time. That's 11AM US Eastern Time)
Votes and orders made on 16:59 will count, while those made on 17:00 WILL NOT.

The Roles

Except for Bank Robber and Undercover, all other Roles MAY, not will, be in the game.

Bank Robber: The simplest role, a Bank Robber knows nothing for sure, but can use the power of his vote to help murder others.

Undercover: An undercover copy who, along with his partners, try to arrest all the Bank Robbers. Each night, the Undercovers contact the Police with their evidence and have one Bank Robber arrested.

Hacker: Can hack into the Police's computer systems once each night to check to see whether someone is an Undercover or a Bank Robber. Any more than once a night and he will be detected.

Bodyguard: May choose to protect one person against arrest every night by helping him get away from the Police, but can't choose to protect the same person two nights in a row and can never protect themselves.

(There are a lot more roles and traits, but we'll keep things simple for this game)

FAQ

1. Do I have to roleplay?

Nope. It's fun and helpful to, but its not required. Some players don't really roleplay at all, and instead simply post votes and accusations, and that's okay too.

2. What do I post?/I don't understand!

You can post anything you like, really. You don't even need to distinguish IC or OOC. Typically Bank Robbers will post accusations. "I think Velax did it, just because!" or "I think Velax did it, because last turn he voted against the guy who turned out to be an Undercover!" Accusations work better when you can back them up with some reason that you think the person is an Undercover. Trash talking is allowed and encouraged.

3. I'm an Undercover. What do I do?

You pretend to be a Bank Robber, but you also conspire with your other Undercovers to determine which Bank Robber to arrest. The Undercovers must all agree on a target, but can use whatever means they like for selection. Meanwhile, be sure to steer suspicion away from yourself, so you don't get murdered!

4. I'm a Hacker!

Great. You can try to figure out who is an Undercover. Communicate wisely though. If you post "Hey, I'm the Hacker!", you might find yourself arrested that very night.

5. I'm still confused/I don't know who to vote for!

Either watch other players in action and see how they're doing it, or jump right in yourself. This game is both deadly serious while also quite comical, where people will accuse others for the slightest and most vague of clues, or just in retaliation for voting against them! The first round of voting is difficult, as the only way to try to tell who's an Undercover and who's not is to listen to what people are saying. In later turns you can try to identify patterns, or look for groups that vote together, or people who changed their votes to keep an Undercover from being executed.

6. Are Bank Robber votes private or do they go in the main thread?

The votes are very definitely public!

7. Do Undercovers vote with the Bank Robbers?

They certainly do. Undercovers want to do everything they can to keep the naive Bank Robbers from suspecting that they're Undercovers. If the Bank Robbers think you're an Undercover, they'll vote to murder you! So an Undercover's job is not only to arrest Bank Robbers, but also to convince the actual Bank Robbers that they're Bank Robbers as well!

8. WTF! I got arrested on the first night! This game sucks!

How did that happen? An NPC should have got arrested instead!

9. Aw man, I'm just a Bank Robber.

We can't all be Undercovers. Have fun being a Bank Robber. Root out the cops! Try not to be confused for an Undercover and murdered by your fellow Bank Robbers!

10. Are there actual Werewolves in the game?

No, it's just the name of the game in this case.

As discussed in the last game I hosted, there will be no PMs allowed for the Bank Robbers. This includes the Hacker and the Bodyguard. Only the Undercovers may send PMs to each other. Obviously I have no actual way of preventing you from sending PMs if you wish, but I would ask that you honour the rules of the game.

The only exception to this rule is PMs sent to me, the GM, asking questions or stating who will be Hacked / Protected each night.

I'll keep registration open for a couple of days. See if people in your realm or whatnot fancy playing - it has been pretty much the same faces the last few games, so it'd be good to get some new blood in.

"I've done nothing wrong, you bastards!" Barry yelled as he was hustled by several police officers into a patrol car. Barry had been walking down a deserted road toward the abandoned warehouse he and his fellow Bank Robbers shared as a hideout. Tonight was meant to be the last meeting between the Bank Robbers in the planning of their big heist, but something had gone drastically wrong. Police cars had appeared as if from nowhere, and a dozen officers quickly surrounded Barry, who had no choice but to surrender immediately.

The rest of the group assembled in their backup hideout later that night. The Hacker worked away busily at his computer while the rest argued.

"What the hell happened?" "One of you bastards must be a rat!" "Shut up, no one's a rat!" "Don't tell me to shut up!"

"QUIET!" yelled the Hacker. "We have got a rat. More than one in fact."

"What?" said one of the Bank Robbers. "What are you talking about?"

"I just hacked into the London Police's computer system. Those pigs have put several Undercovers in our gang. Some of the people here right now are scummy traitors. We have to figure out who they are, and when we do, they're dead."

The first Bank Robber has been arrested! Start voting for the person you think most likely to be an Undercover Agent!

Indirik targets Ketchum because he has been the first in being lynched in all the games, and since we have still no idea the votes are pretty much random; and Slapsticks votes for me because he is trying to see my reaction. Same as previous game, I think.

Day 1 and Night 1

Lefanis (5 votes) - Indirik(39), Zakilevo (51), Fury (53), D'Espana (56), Ross (58), Lanyon (59)
Slapsticks (1 vote) - Penchant (38)
Zakilevo (2 votes) - Slapsticks (36), Lefanis (50)
Lanyon (1 vote) - Ketchum (52)

Lefanis and Sonya did not vote.

The gang argued all day, but as night fell they reached a consensus. Almost as one, the group turned on Lefanis.

"I'm not the rat!" he yelled, backing away. "My job is to protect you! Don't do this! DON'T!"

Several days later, Lefanis' body is found at the bottom of the Thames, cement shoes weighing down his body.

Lefanis the Bodyguard was fitted with cement shoes and drowned.

That night the group left the hideout, going their separate ways until the next meeting tomorrow. Fury walked down an alley, the quickest way for him to get home. He heard a noise behind him and looked over his shoulder. Seeing two dark shapes following him, he walked faster, but they matched his speed. As he reached the alley's exit he heard a metallic noise behind him and spun, drawing his gun.

"DROP YOUR WEAPON AND GET ON THE GROUND!"

Police cars appeared from several side streets, disgorging police officers who trained their guns on Fury. The two officers who had followed him into the alley aimed their weapons at Fury as well. Completely outnumbered, Fury dropped his weapon and lay on the ground, where he was cuffed and hustled into a police car.

Fury the Bank Robber is arrested.

This, aside from a previous remark about the randomness of the votes, gives me the impression that Ketchum is insisting too much in the luck side of our choices to be in our side. It's not much, but still I think that it's the best we've got. Thus, I VOTE KETCHUM.

That makes you a safe, neutral vote for the moment. :D I don't really have anything to go with yet. D'Espana's theory is interesting, but it ignores the fact that, at this point, luck is about all we have.

Sure, but it's not that much common to go claiming around that you are doing things randomly, as most people already are aware of the randomness and don't pay it attention. Provided, of course, that your vote is REALLY random stuff...

So what you're saying, D'Espana, is that instead of going with the guy that's been right quite often, I should go with you, even though you have no reason for your vote, and no track record to support it? Or maybe you're trying to cover for Zak, and distract suspicion onto me?

Day 2 and Night 2

Zakilevo (3 votes) - Slapsticks (70), Indirik (86), Sonya (88)
Ketchum (2 votes) - D'Espana (76), Lanyon (77)
D'Espana (1 vote) - Ketchum (84)

Zakilevo, Penchant and Ross did not vote.

After the previous day's arrest, it became apparent to the Bank Robbers they had erred the day before. Lefanis was not one of the Undercovers. They argued, with opinions swinging first one way, then another. For a time it seemed as though Ketchum would be the next target of the Bank Robbers' wrath, but in the end Zakilevo could not convince the others of his allegiance.

Next morning, the early shift of policemen arrived at their local police station to find the body of Zakilevo hanging from a lamp post outside.

Zakilevo the Bank Robber was hung.

That night the gang separated once more, confident they had finally caught one of the Undercovers. Ross was nearly home when two police cars screamed around the corner and stopped in front of him. Four police officers pointed their guns at Ross, who took cover behind a telephone box. The Bank Robber opened fire, killing one officer and wounding another. The two remaining police shot back, hitting Ross several times and knocking him to the ground. He bled out before the ambulance could arrive.

Ross the Bank Robber is shot to death.

Day 3 and Night 3

Slapsticks (3 votes) - Indirik (91), Ketchum (94), Penchant (99)
Indirik (3 votes) – Lanyon (95), Slapsticks (101), D'Espana (104)

Sonya did not vote.

The Bank Robbers were becoming frustrated. They had caught none of the Undercovers yet, and the police were laughing at them, given they had hung one of their own outside a police station. Their wrath found an outlet in Indirik and Slapsticks. They both protested their innocence, but to no avail.

The next morning, the bodies of Slapsticks and Indirik are found dumped in an alley, their throats slit from ear to ear.

Slapsticks the Bank Robber had his throat cut.

Indirik the Undercover had his throat cut.

Panting heavily, D'Espana dodged down alley after alley, desperately seeking to evade the sounds of barking getting closer behind him. He vaulted over a fence, ran through someone's backyard and over the fence on the other side. The barking continued to draw closer. Turning down another alley, D'Espana found himself face to face with a brick wall. Two police dogs raced around the corner and stopped, growling at him. He drew his gun but had barely raised his arm before powerful jaws closed around it. D'Espana screamed as more jaws closed around his leg.

Police officers gathered at the entrance to the alley. The dog handler made as if to call the dogs back, but an officer placed a hand on his shoulder and shook his head.

"This bastard murdered one of ours. We'll let the dogs have their way with him for a few minutes."

The officers listened to the sounds of growling and screaming emanate from the alley for several minutes before calling the dogs back and arresting the bleeding, moaning lump of flesh lying on the ground.

D'Espana the Hacker is mauled by police dogs and arrested.

With the murder of two of their fellows and the arrest of a third, there were only four Bank Robbers left. They gathered in their hideout, prepping their gear for the heist the following day. Lanyon's head jerked up as sirens screamed outside the hideout. Lanyon and Sonya drew their guns and raced to the windows. Police cars surrounded the hideout, lights flashing. The pair heard the click behind of a gun cocking behind them and turned to see Penchant and Ketchum pointing their guns at them and holding up police badges.

Sonya immediately dropped her gun and surrendered, but Lanyon spat at the Undercovers and dived out the closest window before they could react. He charged at the police cars, firing wildly at the two dozen police clustered outside. Two officers went down under his unexpected hail of bullets, then a third. The officers returned fire and Lanyon was immediately hit by five bullets from the withering wave of gunfire. He went down, still firing madly, a fourth police officer falling to his bullets, before he was finally silenced by the weapons of the police.

Winners
Penchant the Undercover
Ketchum the Undercover

What were the other rules for the undercovers? Do their PMs for a target require 100% consensus or majority? 3 undercovers - if each PMed a different target? Those with special roles really need to find a creative way to use them. Seems like robbers were all shooting in the dark.  ???

All in all, it is a good game :)

In reply to Fury question about 3 Undercovers voting, we pretty much in agreement in who to arrest every Night. One person suggest, the other two vote along.

In reply to Slapstick question about double lynching. If Sonya online and she does vote, it could swing either way. We could end up having another day of voting as 2 Undercovers cannot arrest 3 Robbers. As Indirik, Penchant and myself have shown our cards by voting same person. It is quite a balanced game, in term of votings and pushing blame, jousting for support before lynching.
Title: Re: [Forum Game] Werewolf IV: The Heist
Post by: Fury on September 10, 2012, 03:50:17 AM
Well, how did you agree on who to arrest (edit:not lynch) - through PMs with each other (not allowed) or through the forums? If it was the forums, I think we all missed the secret undercover communication ::) It would seem very hard to do if undercovers can't PM each other at all and we still don't know the rules for the undercovers.
