Title: How do I preserve a Battle Report?
Post by: Ironsides on June 21, 2013, 05:32:46 PM
I've seen it on the wiki before where someone has posted a full battle report and I want to do the same for the battles in Oligarch, but how do I preserve the battle report without messing up the colours or the order of it? I was thinking of doing screen grabs, but I would need a ton to collect every piece of the report.

Any advice/suggestions?

There will be more to come and it's totally worth keeping them on file!

The first step to preserving just about anything in BM is just to save the HTML source of the page it's on.

If you look at, e.g., this one, as a completely random example:

http://wiki.battlemaster.org/wiki/Von_Genf_Family/Olivier/Shooting_Turkeys

It uses a nice infoboxm and the report itself is a pasted HTML. If you go on the source code of the battle report you can copy only the relevant parts and past it directly on the wiki. I remember it took some cleaning up, but nothing too fancy.

As Anaris said, open the battle report itself from the scribe note link, and save the entire page. (Usually CTRL-S.) Once you have that, you have a copy of the HTML that you can use elsewhere. Someone once figured out how you could convert the HTML to wiki-code, or how to clean up the HTML to work on the wiki. The procedure is on the wiki somewhere. It's a lot of work, as the battle report formatting depends on the standard battlemaster CSS which is not available on the wiki.

You cannot just copy/paste the text you seen in your browser. You will end up with an illegible mess.

I see, so this will take some time to do right. Cool, I've got a little project ahead of me.

How would I go about finding the way to convert HTML to wiki? VonGenf, is that how you did it? (Nice work by the way).

No, if you look at the wiki source this part is direct HTML, I only removed the tags that were badly interpreted. It would look much nicer if it was converted to wiki syntax.

There are screen shot tools that allow you to take one long shot even if it's multiple screens long. I don't remember the name, but I'm sure there are many.
