It has been suggested that we should try again to relaunch SpellMaster.
Well, if the interest is there, then why not? :)
Spellmaster says what?
I never played SM but from reading what people are saying about it, it sounds awesome :)

Obviously I'm interested, I brought it up =D
I've been thinking more about the backstory, it would be interesting if the council stones re-discovered during SM2 timeline. Two getting destroyed in the conflicts, and the last one being used to shield the Dragon Isle by erasing it from the memory of the world. Etc. etc. We should schedule a chat. But not this weekend, too much to do.
Here's maybe a fairly important thing to nail down early. Should we dredge up some of the old content from (at least) the initial SM and maybe the first SM2 concept so that people coming in brand new to the concept can get a feel for the world and the backstory? Or do we let those who have knowledge of the past be the historians, of sort, and make it more realistic, where most of the new players have scattered and limited understanding of what's taken place in the past?
I can see great reasoning, both Meta and IC, for doing either one.
The other option would be to launch a new game similar to SM, but separate to the previous world. I know myself that as someone that wasn't involved in SM, I would much prefer to join a whole new imagining of it.
Someone explain to me what Spellmaster was, first. I have no clue what it was in the first place.
I agree Gustav which is why I posted the what the hell is this comment. But apparently they don't want others knowing what is so we can let them play by themselves.
Spellmaster was a pure RP PBeM game, and the precursor to BattleMaster. There is some information on the wiki on the SpellMaster page.
I'll simply set a few things in stone now:
- SM3 will be a new world, an alternate reality to BattleMaster - this solves the problem of SM characters being awfully powerful in the BM context, but it leaves us the opportunity to allow for some limited interaction between the two worlds.
- SM3 will continue the SM2 storyline, but much later. It will be a new universe to discover, but the events of SM and SM2 are part of its history. Yes, that includes the parts of SM2 that were never played - there is stuff to discover here.
I will create some game-mechanics, but very lightly so. It will be a role-playing game with some role-playing rules.
I'm still thinking about the magic system, but for the "big picture" yes, there will be "council stones" again. A council needs to have a stone. If people want to form a new council, they will have to quest for a stone.
I'm thinking about giving the game two layers. One in which the characters compete for whatever they want to compete for, and one in which the councils compete for dominance over... something...
Give me a few more bursts of creativity and I'll have a concept. Until then - find us players. And GameMasters. I can't run this game as a solo GameMaster, we will need a few volunteers.
so everyone can read up, I have revived the two sites:
http://lemuria.org/SpellMaster/ (http://lemuria.org/SpellMaster/)
http://lemuria.org/SM2/ (http://lemuria.org/SM2/)
There is also a wiki from SM2 that I will try to get running again.
I might be interested in playing, but it seems I'll need some time to read about it first.
I'm up for being a regular player.
Sounds like fun to me!

No need to get snippy. I had no idea what "spellmaster says what" was supposed to mean, so didn't dignify it with a response.
!!!!!!!!!!!
;D
!!!!!!!!!!!
That says all that needs to be said from me I think :) (though of course I will say more)
Can we have a certamen engine again, I think having something like that up and running would certainly add to the appeal. Happy to help out in whatever way I can with this. SM is still my favourite game ever and I've always been hoping for its return!
I'm willing to help on any developmental/GM angle we need.

I would just like to say that this does not represent my opinions in any way. I was merely asking for information, not getting mad that people were "holding back information".
Chill, everyone. We've only been "relaunched" for a few hours, so any information not forthcoming is not being held back, it simply hasn't had time to appear, yet.
Gustav, check out all the links Tom has posted in this thread. It should be more than enough to whet your appetite. :)
I do have quite a lot of old email RPs (from lots of people) as well... Still haven't found all the ones from when I first started, but have most from SM2...

Does anyone know of a good way to forward/route these types of things into an archive of some sort without manually adding each message? I've got everything from the reboot labeled and filtered in Gmail, which helps me but probably nobody else.

One could create a Google Group, then have everyone send the messages to its public email address...
I have a group set up like this for the old D-list (but only since maybe 2008 or something). Hm, maybe I should post that for the people who were asking for an archive...
Count me in. I'll happily help with whatever moderation/GM duties are needed.
=) I'm sure Jago will have some fun.
I am of course willing to GM...

Yeah, but does this help me get the stuff from my own account up quickly and publicly for others? I haven't looked at a Google Group in years.

It should, I think. Just do a mass forward and it should work.
There are cleaner options may be are available depending on what client you have them stored in. I suggested this one because it's pretty much universal, so far as I know.
Gmail doesn't allow for mass forwards. I abhor Outlook. Might have to look into Thunderbird or some other IMAP.
don't be too hung up on the old stuff. SM3 will be different. :-)
Got it. So not worth pulling anything in from the failed relaunch?
Concerning background stories, do we have one?
Else i'd suggest this other world to be 'higher' closed dimension which if you partly control (council stones) grants you extra power bonuses and once fully controled, as a grand finale, perhaps you can open a portal an step into the normal world.(beluaterra?:P)
Only from the 'human' world can all other dimensions be reached, like the abbys.
Offcourse it will take allot of effort to reach such grand goal.

Yes. Most of it will have to be discovered.
Well I'm excited. Why don't you all start drawing up some character ideas/sheets, maybe even see who you might want to ally yourselves with.
wait until I've written up a bit about the background, as that will strongly influence character decisions...
I promise it won't be boring...
I certainly may be interested. Will need to here a bit more about it first but we'll see.
Also what sort of time investment is this type of game?
I do believe I must say I'm In. It sounds ultra interesting especially done on a forum.
A short update:
I've selected two GMs and we are working on the background. Things will heat up pretty soon. Stay tuned.
I've never played a game like this before (BM is the only internet game I've played for an extended period) but I must say it all sounds pretty awesome and I would certainly like to sign up.
However I do have one question: what is the relation between game time and real time? What I mean is, if we are only able to post in the evening on certain days would that mean our characters would be unable to do anything as it would be nearly nightfall or would we be able to post as if it were earlier in the day (as long as that did not conflict with what had already been posted earlier of course)?
As with all games you can play at whatever pace you want (although here you won't be penalized). If you have to interact with someone else a conversation can be placed outside of time. *note - You have to give enough time for anyone else in the area to join in (a day or two) before it is 'outside of time'. Once outside of time you can RP your character having left and doing other things and could reference things as they become relevant. If you're doing battle or some such you might want to wait, or you could do something that depends not at all upon the outcome.
