Title: Realm Box map fixing/editing
Post by: Arundel on August 25, 2011, 07:58:04 AM
I have inputted large amounts of work into improving and revamping the Pian en Luries page, http://wiki.battlemaster.org/wiki/Pian_en_Luries (http://wiki.battlemaster.org/wiki/Pian_en_Luries), but have run into problems concerning the {Realm Box}. I've been trying to have the realm box show the map, and in my attempts, I have copied the |Maprealm = | from Terran/Caerwyn pages, appropriately renamed the map name (PeL, Pian en Luries, PianenLuries, Pian, etc...) and I simply cannot, for the life of me, get it to work. I was thinking the naming was wrong, but I've tried everything (including the file path that shows at the bottom of the box, on the finished page.) Forgive me for my inane knowledge of the wiki, if this is a simple wording issue, but I would appreciate help :).

What about removing the addition to the bottom of the box? The one that gives the supposed "realm location"?

I think that was because you were using the Realmbox/Sandbox template instead of the plain Realmbox one. I've changed it to the regular template and it seems to have vanished.

It was there before I began my initial edits, but thanks :).

(And sorry for the 2nd post, should have just added it with an edit XD)

Ahh... yes. The "Realm Location". Gsklee used to have a site that generated little mini-maps. It used the external data feed to generate these "locator views" of realms. Gsklee drifted away, then eventually the maps stopped updating, and now they appear to have completely disappeared altogether. Well, I suppose that's what happens with non-officially-hosted player-generated content. It's too bad, those little mini-maps were pretty cool.

I never did understand why we didn't integrate that into the game. Those maps were awesome.

As far as I know, Gsklee custom drew the source for those minimaps pixel by pixel, by hand. That's a LOT of work. But then he never gave the code to anyone. So when he went away, the code as lost.

Tim rigged up something using SVG and overlays on the dynamic maps that was pretty neat. But it depends on good SVG maps. The ones I created weren't all that good. It was OK for EC, and I think finished AT/BT, but I never did Dwilight.

Weren't you working on SVG maps of the islands? If those were available, then there's a lot Tim could do with them.

I was, but then I got busy. And now I'm not sure if it's worth it, with the new come maps?

In any case, the way I do them gives a LOT of precision. It therefore, obviously, takes a lot of time. And I've got an overbooked schedule, however unlikely that may sound.

I only finished AT/BT. I don't think I had significant progress on any other continent. I was gonna do Dwilight, but it's so biiiig... And for Tim to do something of it, don't I need to do it for *all* continents? That's a lot of work... And not particularly fun work at that.

As for what Gsklee did, did anyone ask him?

Obviously, the scale at which he worked made it a ton easier for him to do than what we were doing.
