Title: update
Post by: Tom on September 22, 2011, 12:32:43 PM
I've updated the forum software to SMF 2.0.1 (the latest release).

If you notice anything missing or broken, let me know.

When you reply to a message, the edit box is about 4 times wider than the screen. It's thousands of pixels wide. And of course then the text doesn't warp, and scrolls off the right side of the screen....

Very annoying.

The "Quick Reply" box is fine. It's just the regular edit bax that is used when you click the "Reply", "Quote", or "New Topic" buttons.

My browser is Chrome, 14.0.835.186 beta-m.

I can repeat the bug with Firefox 3.6.20

Same on Safari 5.1.

The problem appears to be that the textarea has
Code: [Select]
cols="600" on it.

weird, it works just fine for me, though I also see the "cols=600" part. Could it be intentional, some trick to resize it to fit the screen?

Dunno.  But it shouldn't be fitting the screen anyway; at most it should be extending to the edge of the beige background of the "post reply" section.

Interestingly, though I have the usual resize handle at the bottom right (this being Safari), I cannot use it to shrink the textarea horizontally.

If I change the "cols" value to something much smaller using the Web Inspector, I can resize it to the normal size, but I can't resize it smaller than what the "cols" value makes it.  ...Not sure if that's normal behaviour or not, offhand.

Works fine in the latest FireFox 6.0.2 on Windows XP.

it's apparently an issue with the theme. I'll check for fixes.

I've made a fix that may or may not solve it. If it doesn't - well, someone go looking for a 2.0 compatible theme that looks nice and fits BM. :-)

Seems to have worked for me in Chrome. The edit box is no longer crazy-wide, and can be resized with the handle in the bottom corner.  Well, it can be made taller or shorter, but not narrower or wider. Anyway, works good enough.

Crap, now the Quick Reply box is busted with the super-wide edit box... :(
Title: Re: update

switching everyone to the SM3 layout (which is 2.0 compatible) until we find a new 2.0 theme. Clear Mind (the one used before) was never updated to 2.0.

Confused the heck out of me for a sec there...Also, is there any way to get the top bar with links to all the parts of the game back for the forum?  It's very handy.

Ugh, I was already feeling sick. The confusion when the Spellmaster theme came up nearly made me puke. I'm not saying it looks bad, it was just a mind-freak.

Same. Totally not used to it. I also dislike how it shifts the whole forum like 2 inches to the right. Then again, the reply box is an additional two inches to the right of that. I quite dislike it.

Indeed. This theme is neat, but the old is far superior.
Title: Re: update
Post by: Tom on September 23, 2011, 09:49:32 AM
There's no point in whining, the old one isn't coming back because it's not 2.0 compatible and apparently isn't maintained anymore. So search me a fitting 2.0 compatible theme (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/) or build one. If you build one, you need to maintain it if there are updates to SMF.

Do you want it to be medieval looking or can it just be a well done, classy looking one?

I want it to fit to BattleMaster, which means the default modern blue look is out. It doesn't have to be medieval, but it shouldn't scream "Web 2.0! look at me!" and the colour scheme should be similar to the game.

Well..here's a few I came across that might be suitable..

http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2428 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2428) - the chocolate variation probably most fitting.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2348 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2348)

http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2330 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2330)

http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2308 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2308) - the "inverted" one.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2269 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2269)

Yeah, I'm fine with the theme, but any chance of getting the quick links back at the top?

This one is the updated version of Clear Mind, the theme we were using before.

Prefered the old one, but I get that it has to change, and this new look is ok...

...except for the left of the screen.  Any way to get it to stop wasting the left two inches of the screen with blankness?
Title: Re: update
Post by: Gustav Kuriga on September 23, 2011, 03:22:41 PM
Let's be clear here. I'm not saying I don't like the theme. I'm just saying I was literally feeling sick at the time, and the change from one style to the other confused me so much as to cause my stomach to flip. I actually wouldn't have minded any other day, but I was suffering from dizziness, a headache, and nausea yesterday. Not a good combination.

I don't mean to whine, but I personally do quite dislike the new theme. The text box is like 4-5 inches to the right of the screen. While my screen is huge, I can imagine that would be a problem to many.

This one is the updated version of Clear Mind, the theme we were using before.

Then why don't we use it? Imo, it's by far the best looking of all those presented, though Green Bean was slightly better than most.

I'm not a huge fan either, as I do not care for the contrast. The background is a bit bright for my taste. I'm just glad you brought the distinct 'New' icons back. This morning I was about ready to pluck out my eyes...

This is the one I picked for now. I'm not completely happy with it, I find it is way too dark. Anyone with a design background feel like improving the colour scheme? You can download it from up there and rework the CSS files.

Somewhere in between the darkness of this theme and the lightness of the spellmaster one would be best. The spellmaster one is blinding for anything longer than short periods on the forums.
Title: Re: update
Post by: psymann on September 28, 2011, 10:23:08 AM
Yep, this one's much nicer, thanks :-)
I don't even mind it being dark - I think I can get used to that.  Though it might be better if the quotes were a darker shade that the normal posts, rather than being a lighter shade, since at the moment the quotes stand out a bit better than the actual posts, which is a shame.  Maybe just as simple as swapping over the quotes' background colour with the background colour of the darker posts?
Anyway, even without that, it's nice again now :-D
