Title: Roleplaying Section
Post by: songqu88@gmail.com on March 09, 2011, 09:07:22 PM
I'm a bit confused about the Roleplaying Section. Although I guess it could be used as a repository for our RPs, we also have the wiki, which provides what I think is a better medium for RPs. So what is unique about the forum's RP section? I have an idea about what I would like to post there, but I'm not sure whether it's something permissible.

Basically I'd like to start some thread where we take on characters not part of our family. I guess this isn't actually not allowed since players are allowed to create NPCs (as in humans/animals, not those talking corpses/teddy bears/flaming lizards). So basically it would be a self-contained story that could crossover into the actual main game. However, since not everyone would have to play actual characters on the same continent, that might be impractical sometimes.

As an example, I might write something like "The traveling merchant Maximillian Gordon walks into a pub and asks the barkeeper about the recent bandit attacks." And then the player of the Smith family (fictional family for purposes of example) might write "Josiah Templeton greets Max Gordon with a wave and offers to do stuff."

You get the point. So would this be ok for the RP section? Technically there are no actual player characters that would be involved in this case.

The section is there for you to use as you see fit. The idea was that everything posted there should be in-character.

Sounds like it could be fun. I think you should start your thread with an opening declaration of what it will be about, and maybe put in some ground rules about it.

And we probably should come up with some general RP forum conventions, too.

I'm actually unfamiliar with forum RP, so I'll need some help with that.

I've never done forum RP either. There was some beginning discussions on the other community site, but it never really got going.

The problem with forum RP is that you don't have a way (like dice rolls) to determine the success or failure of an action.

I've participated in my share of free form forum-based RPGs in the days. If you have a group of people desiring to write an interesting story together, then it can work just fine. You do, however, tend to have people now and then who like to "god mode", usually without realizing how poor form it is.
