Title: What Browser Do You Use?
Post by: Perth on March 23, 2011, 06:56:04 AM
Just curious what everyone uses. I know Tom encourages Firefox usage (or used to at least). Does anyone switch over to Firefox (or other) just for Battlemaster? Anyone use multiple browsers regularly?

I'm a longtime Firefox user. Just downloaded Firefox 4 today and I'm really enjoying it. Loving the new interface improvements and (what seems to be) zippier performance so far.

I prefer Google Chrome. They are one of the smartest companies out there and the layout is easier than FF for me. It's a very easy browser to use or you can make it wicked cool and complex  8)

Google Chrome would indeed be my second choice. I've used it some, and enjoy it, but Firefox really is my true love. Also, I'm on a Mac, and last time I was using Chrome, the OS X version wasn't quite as robust as it's Windows counter-part (though that may be because I was testing out the Beta at the time, can't remember now).

I was a long term firefox user. But the time it has taken to get firefox 4 out was just painful. On my machine flash intensive apps were running really slow. I changed to chrome and had an immediate speed up. I currently do a lot of HMTL 5 stuff with canvas, again chrome was simply faster then the competition. IE 9 and Firefox 4 in my opinion are just playing catch up to chrome at this stage.

Used to be a big time FF user, but jumped ship to Chrome as soon as it came out. For me it's less bloated than FF has become.

I used Firefox for years right up until about a month ago when I was having issues with Firefox slowing way down or just crashing constantly. So, I decided to make a full switch to Chrome (which I've always had installed as a backup) and I havent really bothered looking back.

Opera man here. Began trying it intermittently a few years ago, but always fell back to Firefox and it's extensions. But I started to fall in love with Opera after 9.5. Then Opera 10 came along under the banner of being 'the fastest browser on earth' and any lingering doubts disappeared. Great interface, email client, found a few useful things to do with Opera Unite. I've never looked back.

Firefox 4 looks like it took blatant visual cues from Opera 10+. Have used Chrome recently and Opera is definitely at least it's equal. Not sure extensions are yet up to par with those of other browsers and ad blocking on Opera has always been painful compared to other browsers but you have to take the rough with the smooth >.< Only reason I use Firefox now is to view those websites that still can't get their heads round Opera.

I could never get the hang of Opera.

I have used FF for a long time, but have recently switched to Chrome. FF has just seemed to be getting a lot more bloated and balky, especially when using a lot of Flash stuff. Chrome doesn't seem to have that problem. Or at least not as bad.

Firefox: AdBlock Plus!

Chrome as a back-up.

This needs to be a multiple-select poll  :D

Android Browser most of the time now, Konqueror (KDE default browser) or Iceweasel (Firefox with copyright graphics etc removed) when on Linux desktop and Firefox on Windows. Also Opera on phone, Linux or Windows.

Mostly use FF but sometimes IE or Chrome.
I already had FF before I played battlemaster but it was one of the reasons to start using it more and with an IE update I disliked I changed to FF as main and if I have a reason not to use FF I try Chrome and/or IE.

Opera is a good browser, but falls behind in a few speed related tasks. Mostly that is to do with javascript execution, so its not noticeable on most web pages, but if you use javascript heavy web apps, you would notice the the difference. That said the speed between the browsers is really quite close now, with the exception of the canvas element for HTML 5. Firefox and Opera fall behind IE 9 and Chrome on that, though I've not tested Firefox 4 in that regard.

In any case, I think I'll always use a browser with a lower popularity; both for security reasons as to force the other browsers to keep on reinventng themselves.

The day FF gets the biggest user base, I'm switching over to something else.

Has anyone been on vacation or away temporarily and wanted to check just quickly check BM or to seriously play, but then get on the only available computer and find only IE is installed?

My work place only has IE. Until recently it only had IE6, it now has IE 7. You can tell the multi million dollar IT contract they have with a inter-national IT company is worth EVERY penny. I just carry around a USB memory stick with chrome portable now.

The iPod comes equipped with Safari. It works for quick access to BM.

Otherwise, Chrome for smoother access when performing mechanics-based actions. Firefox when doing more text-based interactions, as I do not like Chrome's default text selection settings and I am not inclined to change them.

When I was younger, I was relegated to AOL browser as I'm sure many others might have. :p

Of course, later went to IE as I was figuring things out. I tried Firefox, didn't like, honestly, especially when the tabs were much clunkier. So, I used Opera, but even that fell behind eventually and I ultimately went back to IE because the tabs felt better and actually split each tab to a seperate sub-process, before FireFox, as I recall. I didn't like FireFox for some time after a point... Then Chrome came out, and I've used that ever since.

The UI is a little Spartan, but that's alright. It runs well, loads websites efficiently, caches okay... But the efficient loading is what does it, lets me browse through a site a little faster.

The only thing I don't like about Chrome versus Firefox, at least for BM, is the strange way Chrome highlights text. It probably can be changed in some settings, but since I only use Chrome for BM anyway, I don't really see the point.

This basically echoes my sentiments as well.  I used to love Firefox, but as time went on, it got slower and slower.  Then there was the literal slowdown if you kept it open for longer than IT wanted.

Google Chrome?  I've never had similar problems with it.

Now, don't get me wrong.  I tend to use Thunderbird for e-mail now and I have the latest FF and IE installed...  Just so very rarely use them.

Firefox.

I use Chrome whenever I want to run lighter, though.

Yes.  And with a dodgy dial-up connection, two weeks ago.

Took me about an hour to travel to one location and send one message because I had to zoom each page in to about 400% before the side panel stopped covering up the links for the travel and the links to send messages.  It was a painful experience.

---

I've used Opera ever since playing Tribal Wars, because it was at the time, and may still be, the only browser which gave enough customisation on short-cut key codes to allow me to send my attacking forces off in five waves of attacks in less than the desired 150milliseconds.  "The Opera Method" as it was known was the fastest and therefore best method for attacking other players, and the top players (not that I was one of those, mind!) all seemed to use it.

Once I got Opera for that, I started using it for other things.  I love the interface - everything is intuitively where I expect it to be, and they always seem to be a step ahead of firefox and chrome in improving it (most recent nifty addition being the ability to combine tabs at the top into groups and then collapse/expand a particular group, so for example I can have battlemaster game, forum and bugtracker all on one group, and hide it down to just one tab when not playing BM, then expand back to three tabs when playing again - I've not been able to do that with Chrome and haven't tried with Firefox as I stopped using it ages ago as I really hated the interface).
