Title: Regarding Winter.
Post by: Woelfy on July 17, 2012, 07:42:03 AM
Am I delusional and imagining things or have there been 6 days of winter left for about a week now?

Agreed. I am running out of food and the Winter count down seems to be playing tricks on me... I could have sworn it said 6 days til winter is over about a week ago.

It still says 6 days? Shouldn't it have ended a few days ago?

Should have ended at least 3 days ago. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

If you hadn't posted it, I would. I almost got a heart-attack seeing it is still 6 days until Spring.

Hopefully it will be fixed soon.
Maybe it was intentional, to burn through the reserves of bushels in Dwilight.

Reserves? >_>

Erm. Right. I'm going to pretend there are reserves.

I had to sell all my grain to feed the cities, I'm down to 100 and we eat nearly 20 a day, so...

Sh*t.

FFFFFUUUU-

I shouldn't have posted that Winter's Embrace poem on Facebook. :-| Gaia, I apologize! I don't hate the sun, just... Somewhat dislike it! I swear! :-P Don't turn us all into starving Human popsicles, Ma'am. >_>

I find it hilariously ironic it gets HOTTER in RL after I post this, yet the season system in BM breaks and we're shrouded in eternal Winter. Rofl.

Winter's Embrace

Where, I bellow toward the heavens, is Winter's snow?
Though Summer's end is long since past, Fall seems to linger well past its due.
Should Winter not rise from its slumber and give rise to mountainous snow,
Spring shall soon overthrow him and take his seat as Lord of Seasons.

Garbed in fur, he reigns 'fore and after Year's death and rebirth.
Winds of Change cast over our world a blanket; not of cloth, but of moisture and snow.

I await the cold embrace of Winter's softest ice-crystals, fallen from sky above.
When shall they come - when shall they go...

I do not wish for Summer's blaze, for droughts and fire and sweaty days
I wish for cold, and ice, and snow, to bathe the world in moonlit glow

I put no faith in Summer's hand, to scorch the clouds and bake the land
I believe in Winter's cold embrace, I do yet hope he'll win this race

But what of Spring, and passing Fall; united seasons, one and all?
I dream of heeding Winter's calls, of walking through high Odin's halls

From whence had come the falling rain, shall come the snow; mid-summer's bane
I sing that snow may fall to ground, I pray for Winter to be found

Heed my call, dear eldest season, and listen to my words of reason
We wait for you to come again, like year before, and before then

Bring your coat of fur and ice; a simple flurry would suffice
That children shall find Winter's joy, and make complete the gift of toy

Be it Fir or Pine tree standing tall, or lighting of candles; nine in all,
The season calls for celebration, through young and old, each generation.

Take my hand and gaze with me, at whitest snow upon the tree
And walk this way as I now do, to witness Winter's cold debut

Lets watch as snowflakes fall to ground, and cool wind blows them all around
Lets stand upon the mountain tops, and pray the snowfall never stops

May Winter reign throughout the lands, like desert bathed in colored sands.
May Winter bring year's death and birth, and reason to ignite the hearth.

I do not know when Spring shall come, but snow shall fall in lengthy sum.
I know not when Winter shall end, but know that moisture shall transcend.

To sky above and cloud beyond, the water always shall abscond
From babbling brook and tiny stream, its all a part of Nature's scheme.

So look beyond where Fall is found, and wish for snowfall all around.
Where's Winter's grasp we shall embrace, and a year's end we may erase.

So this is turning out to be fairly entertaining. Being ordered to attack and loot enemy regions for food. Scouting out regions that are not starving yet. Cutting down filthy peasants that dare to revolt.

It was fun actually, political intrugue over food sells, cities going hungry. C'mon, who can predict when a season ends.

If it gets implemented that we won't be able to know how fast or slow a season ends, it would be great fun. Thoughts?

I disagree. I know of at least one war and several TOs that were put on hold specifically because of the season.

Sell what food you want, but I'd rather see BattleMaster than FoodMaster...

I agree with ^ban^, but I also think the above statement is exactly what Tom and the dev team have been trying to encourage. Everything in BM is just an excuse to prosecute war by other means.

The wars and TOs were put on hold not because it was winter, but because there is an expectation of spring. If we were in an eternal winter, or one that stopped at random dates, then I bet the wars would not stop.

That being said... I prefer playing Battlemaster than GameofthronesMaster.

Wars would occur with perpetual winter, but there is no food production in winter.  So all regions would starve.
Does anyone have reserves?  My region can last another 10 days.  Most regions around me are already starting to starve.

Adding a random factor to season lengths is easy. What's not so easy and requires additional coding is a "year counter" so that the length of a year does not vary, even though seasons do.

Well, I really wouldn't mind if the years didn't have all the same days! The years begin with the spring and end with the winter, easy!   :P

and The Romans changed 'his years' more than once, so I don't see the problem with a bit of 'variety'  ;D

The Romans may have changed the calendar, but not the number of days it takes the earth to go around the sun. Which is what matters.

At the first day of spring (or summer or whatever the first season is after you calculate), calculate the length of the 4 seasons, ensuring that the total length of the 4 seasons is the same. Then, you can calculate the next 4 seasons, and so on.
Title: Re: Regarding Winter.

egamma,

would you not then always know the length of the last season when you knew the length of the third one?
Title: Re: Regarding Winter.
Post by: Indirik on July 19, 2012, 05:38:24 PM
That presupposes that Tom will tell you how he implemented it.

egamma,

Don't we have that 'problem' right now, but for all 4 seasons, instead of just 1?

If it was implemented between summer and autumn, you wouldn't know how long winter, spring, or autumn would be, which are arguably the most critical seasons?

Title: Re: Regarding Winter.

Something like this: The length of the IG year remains constant (84 days). At the beginning of each year, the seasons are assigned random no. of days (16-26, or something similiar) and the total no. of days of all the seasons adds up to 84 ?
Title: Re: Regarding Winter.

I would laugh if one of the years ended up being one day each for spring, summer, and autumn, then the rest of the days were winter. Then I'd break down and cry.

Lets just add a new continent that is the Arctic equivalent on the BM planet? It's completely covered with ice/snow regions with extremely long and harsh winters.

I don't think civilization is possible in the northern extremes of the arctic. Unless mass amounts of trading took place OR if we became a full set of carnivores and ate anything in sight...

Perth,

Yes, we could have a continent of "Depressia" where winters are long, crops frequently fail, starvation is the norm and life harsh in all manner of ways. Non-heroes would die in battle as well and assassinations would kill your character. On top of these there would be plagues and dark creatures creeping in the snow. There we would forge a culture of either ruthless struggle for survival or one of compassion and sacrifice. Nothing would last, and anything that blossoms awhile would be crushed under the chilling snowstorms of the dark north.

Where do I sign?

I would freaking love a permadeath required island with harsh conditions. I know that this is unlikely to happen anytime soon due to the population, but if we ever do add another island please make it a "hardcore" permadeath only island that resembles Dwilight when it was mostly unsettled :).

I agree permadeath would be a cool feature, but i think it would lead to a LOT more infiltrators and less wars because everyone would be scared of losing their character. But hey I'd give it a run as long as travel times were adjusted to make travel "normalish" and not super long everywhere because of winter

The only downside that I can think of is that people would pausing characters all over the place, just to get a character there. Some realms would become veritable ghost towns! Even if we had quite a few more players, I believe that would always be the case.

So why not do it anyway, if the character count doesn't matter so much? ;)
