i "played" go on the odd occasion with my dad when i was a kid... on one of them magnetic boards. literally played, not much clue on what i was doing.

KGS is a java webstart client. If you have java on your computer you should be fine.

Nothing impressive though - I believe my KGS rating was something like 14 kyu or so, though now of course it would be nothing of the kind due to lack of practice. What is neat about go is that the handicap system enables two people of differing skills to play together and offer a challenge to both. That is, if the skill difference is not too big to nullify all sorts of handicaps.

You also start with the 9x9 board to get the basic idea, and gradually move to the larger boards. Scales up nicely.

Lovely game, but... it does draw away your time like no other game can.
