Title: [Forum Game] Werewolf: A Teeeensy Bit of Murder
Post by: Barek (jerm) on August 21, 2012, 04:57:08 AM
The Rules

Werewolf is a game of paranoia, deception and betrayal. Hidden amongst the innocent, ignorant villagers are small Packs of Werewolves looking to eat them. The villagers outnumber the Werewolves, but they don't know who to trust. Meanwhile, the Werewolves know their fellow Pack members and can work together to even the odds. The Werewolves want to kill enough villagers so that they can reach parity and overthrow the village openly; the villagers want to destroy the Werewolf menace by uncovering their secret identities.

If that wasn't a dire enough situation for the village, even amongst the villagers there are Cultists looking to help their Werewolf masters and people Cursed to become Werewolves if attacked. Fortunately the village has the aid of the Seers, who can find the true allegiance of the villagers, and of the Doctors and Guardian Angels, who might be able to protect them. These players must hide their identity just as much as the Werewolves must, as they are the greatest threat to the forces of evil and will surely be killed if revealed.

It may seem like a simple Villager is powerless in this clash of good and evil, but they are not. Every day the village gets to choose one person to lynch, as punishment for the nightly murder. The village must vote to choose the person they think most likely to be responsible. With their vote, the Villager can reveal much about the motives of others. But they must be cunning, or more than a little lucky, if they are to survive.

Standard Big Rules

All roles will be handed out after the last person signs up, with all players receiving a PM containing their role and (known) traits. The game will then proceed to a night deadline.

The game is divided into two periods - night and day. For practical reasons these two periods are run concurrently, from one update till the next. Each update is 24 hours apart.

Each day, all players vote to lynch one of the players - the person they think is most likely to be a Werewolf or other baddie. Each night, the Werewolves decide who to kill. In each 24 hour period, the village will lynch, and the Werewolves will hunt. The villagers can try to lynch multiple people by creating a glorious, Lemeard-approved tie, and the Werewolves can also decide not to hunt anyone at all at night. Beware of Crovaxian slips as well!

There are also other things that go bump in the night. The order these will be resolved in is as follows:
1. Lover
2. Wizard
3. Seer
4. Hunter
5. Guardian Angel
6. Werewolf
7. Witness

Werewolves will be divided into one or more Packs, with one Pack hunting each night. The order the Packs hunt in will be known only to them.

The Werewolves  win if they  manage to reach parity with the rest of the village.
The Villagers, Seer, Guardian Angel  win if they manage to destroy all the werewolves.

Standard Werewolf Rules

§1A. - You sign up to the game by requesting so in a post in this thread.
§1B. - No new players will be admitted after the game has started, except to substitute for another player.
§1C. - You may at any time be substituted out by requesting so in the thread.
§1D. - Failure to vote on two occasions will lead to immediate substitution.

§2A. – Players will vote daily. See Rule 1D.
§2B. – Invalid votes (Voting for Game Moderator/Ghosts) will not be accepted and be considered to be in violation of Rule 2A.
§2C. – In the event of a tie all tied players will be executed.
§2D. - The player(s) with the majority of votes at deadline are considered dead. They will not reveal any inside information after the deadline. The presumed dead player(s) should post in purple text until their true role is confirmed.

§3A. - Orders and votes submitted after deadline are ignored.
§3B. - Orders (scans, hunts, et cetera) are sent to the Game Moderator via PM.
§3C. - Players are responsible for any Private Messages missed due to inbox being full.

§4A. - Spectators and ghosts may comment, but never suggest a course of action, reveal any new information, including vote counts, or discuss any details of their former character, in the case of ghosts. Preferably spectators will comment only in a manner tangential to the actual game.  This rule is super duper important, and if you break it, terrible and awful things will happen to you!
§4B. - When doing ghost/spectator commentary, please use a non-white colour.

§5. - Alliances and Feuds which aren't based on your characters or roles in the game between players are forbidden. Alliances and Feuds which continue from one game to another undermine the whole idea of the game.

§6A. – The Game Moderator has the last word on all matters.
§6B. – If the Game Moderator makes a mistake (e.g. with the vote count, hunt/scan orders), if critical information has been revealed, the mistake will be kept.

§7A. – Forging PMs is allowed. Screenshots of PMs is not.
§7B. - Posting or quoting of PMs from the GM is not allowed - real or forged.

§8A. – Voting must be done in the following way. Write "VOTE" and the person you are voting for in bold text.
§8B. - If you wish to un-vote someone, write "UNVOTE" and their name in bold text.
§8C. - In case of re-voting without un-voting the original vote will be the counted vote.
§8D. - Do not edit votes after posting them. If you make a mistake, unvote and revote in a new post.
§8E. - Votes should be oversized or clear of other text to ensure they are not missed by the GM.

§9. - The GM can and will remove players if the GM believes that player is adversely affecting the game, for example through failure to fulfill voting obligations or deliberate violation of the rules. This will be done through the use of killing the player's role, or using substitutes, if they are available. All such decisions are made solely at the discretion of the GM.

§10. - Failure to vote on 2 occasions without prior notice will result in automatic substitution. If no substitution have been found 6 hours before deadline, the player will be autolynched at next deadline.

§11 - Most games will start with one player dying on the very first night, without even having gotten to vote and such.  It sucks to get killed off first, but its part of the game.  On the upside, the first player killed automatically gets 1st dibs on Substitution, no matter who else has signed up for Subs.

Deadline

The deadline of this game is 21:00 GMT+2 ( <- Forum Time.  That's 3PM US Eastern Time)
Votes and orders made on 20:59 will count, while those made on 21:00 WILL NOT.

The Roles

Except for Villager and Werewolf, all other Roles MAY, not will, be in the game

Villager:  The simplest role, a villager knows nothing for sure, but can use the power of his vote to help lynch others.

Werewolf: A sinister, evil player who, along with his partners, try to eliminate all the good players. Each night, the werewolves hunt a player.

Seer:  Can scan one person each night to check to see whether he is a werewolf, warlock, or villager.

Guardian Angel: May choose to protect one person against Werewolf attack every night, but can't choose to protect the same person two nights in a row and can never protect themselves.

(lots more roles and traits, but we'll keep things simple for this game)

FAQ

1. Do I have to roleplay?   Nope.  Its fun and helpful to, but its not required.  Some players don't really roleplay at all, and instead simply post votes and accusations, and that's okay too.
2.  What do I post?/I don't understand!   You can post anything you like, really.  You don't even need to distinguish IC or OOC.  Typically villagers will post accusations.  "I think jerm did it, just because!"  or "I think jerm did it, because last turn he voted against the guy who turned out to be a werewolf!"  Accusations work better when you can back them up with some reason that you think the person is a werewolf.  Trash talking is allowed encouraged.
3.  I'm a werewolf.  What do I do?  You pretend to be a villager, but you also conspire with your other werewolves to determine which innocent villager to kill.  The werewolves must all agree on a target, but can use whatever means they like for selection.  Meanwhile, be sure to steer suspicion away from yourself, so you don't get lynched!
4.  I'm a seer!  Great.  You can try to figure out who is a werewolf.  Communicate wisely though.  If you post "Hey I'm the seer!!", you might find a pack of werewolves visiting you that very night.
5.  I'm still confused/I don't know who to vote for  Either watch other players in action and see how they're doing it, or jump right in  yourself.  This game is both deadly serious, and quite comical, where people will accuse others for the slightest and most vague of clues, or just in retaliation for voting against them!  The first round of voting is difficult, as the only way to try to tell who's a werewolf and who's not is to listen to what people are saying.  In later turns you can try to identify patterns, or look for groups that vote together, or people who changed their votes to keep a werewolf from being lynched.
6.  Are villager votes private or do they go in the main thread?  Very definitely public!  In fact, villagers are discouraged from using PMs.  (and are reminded that if someone PMs you to share information, they might be misleading you!)  Villagers should post all of their accusation, votes, and so forth in the thread for all to see.
7.  Do werewolves vote with the villagers? You bet your sweet ass they do.  Werewolves want to do everything they can to keep the naive villagers from suspecting that they're werewolves.  If the villagers think you're a werewolf, they'll vote to lynch you!  So a werewolf's job is not only to kill villagers, but also to convince the villagers that they're actual innocent villagers as well!
8.  WTF!  I got hunted on the first night!  This game sucks!!  Yeah, sorry about that.  But the villagers won't start the lynchin' till someone gets killed!  It stinks to get picked off first, but its part of the game.  See rule §11 above.  And be sure to hang out and spectate/commentate!
9.  Aw man, I'm just a villager.  We can't all be werewolves.  Have fun being a villager.  Root out the evildoers!  Try not to be confused for a werewolf and lynched by your fellow villagers!

Title: Night 0: Murderous Murder!
Post by: Barek (jerm) on August 22, 2012, 08:57:03 PM

Night 0

Night falls and the village is quiet. The villagers are in bed and even the drunks have passed out in pools of vomit in the alleys. A door slams shut and the last light in the village is extinguished as its owner retires.

But not all is still. Padded feet prowl the dark streets. A drunk starts up, bleary-eyed, at a noise in the darkness. A huge black shape flits past the alley and is gone. The drunk falls back, asleep again.

Several isolated huts sit on the edge of the village, home to the poorest inhabitants. The dark shape pads toward them. A dog barks and one of the villagers turns over in his sleep, but relaxes as no more barks are heard.

The dark shape tosses the headless corpse of the dog to one side and prowls closer to the nearest house. The shape circles it, sniffing the air, catching the scent of the two villagers inside. Shaking its furred muzzle, it pads toward another of the isolated homes and sniffs again, smelling only one human inside this hut. It moves closer.

The villager sleeps peacefully, dreaming pleasant dreams. Something disturbs him and he sits up. There is nothing there. Grumbling, he gets out of bed and reaches for the chamberpot. The door explodes inward in a shower of wood and fur. The villager screams and runs into the back room, reaching for anything he can use as a weapon. Grabbing a pitchfork, he turns to face the furred, wolf-like shape as it stalks into the room. He thrusts his weapon but the creature grabs it and snaps it into kindling. It bares its teeth in a monstrous grin. As the werewolf's fangs sink deep into his neck, Perth draws his breath for one final scream...

Spectators and ghosts are politely reminded to post in an alternate color.

And Perth is apologized to by the Game Moderator, since the werewolves are unlikely to say that they're sorry.

I'm reasonably sure I'm not a werewolf. Passed out in my bed after a night of drinking and I was still there when I woke up, fully clothed. If I were a wewolf would my clothes burst off when I transformed? Maybe not if I was bitten by a small werewolf, or a fashionable werewolf...

Anyway, I vote for Addridae. He seems shifty.

Edited to highlight who I was voting for.

Nope, wanted to see who would bandwagon instantly on a triple vote.

It's not much but it's better than nothing and I say go for some sort of half rational choice rather than blind voting on day 1.

VOTE CREN

Something to add: as a general rule, if you're a townie, don't stay silent. Often only power roles talk and that leads to bad things. So seriously, at least pretend to be interested.

Well we have only lost one person. We can discuss what the victim's job was. Was he a villager? a Seer? or a Guardian Angel?
Title: Re: [Forum Game] Werewolf: A Teeeensy Bit of Murder
Post by: Norrel on August 23, 2012, 06:20:54 AM
For your convenience:

Slapsticks: Penchant, Ehndras, Cren
Ehndras: Zakilevo,
Addridae: Velax
Cren: Slapsticks
Not voting: Adriddae, Sonya,

I suspect: Cren and the no-voters.

I said that I had prior experience in the game so maybe I'm being focused for that. Also, no-voters might be trying to get in a fast lynch towards the end of the round and its usually better to point the finger at people who aren't contributing much. So yeah.

I can't imagine we lost a Seer or Guardian Angel. The werewolf (werewolves?) would have no way of knowing who they are yet, so they'd have to get pretty lucky to pick off a Seer first go.

The werewolves choose who they want to murder. We don't get to defend ourselves from that murder, all we can do is try to figure out who they are and then lynch them before they kill us all.

The werewolves picked you. And the game has to start with a murder, else why would the villagers start lynching people? As Barek said, next time the first murder will be an NPC, although that won't change much. It just means the villagers will lynch someone before they get to do much rather than the werewolves murdering someone before they get to do anything.

So if a guardian angel choses to protect one of us and a werewolf tries to kill that person, the werewolf fails, right?

Yeah, but if you think about it, if a PC gets murdered first, the first lynching has more chance of killing a werewolf, as there will be fewer villagers with one dead.

So if a guardian angel choses to protect one of us and a werewolf tries to kill that person, the werewolf fails, right?

Don't know how the Angel works.

What is the reason you choose yourself Slapsticks?

Are you perhaps thinking on deceive us, or do you think that the death of Perth was a mere joke?

Changing the exactitude nonchalantly will not help you, because i know that the accusation from other villagers made you nervous and almost with  heavy conscience you were about to admit your crimes.

I vote for Slapsticks i think that you are the Werevolf!

You have to explain well the reason, if you want to convince me otherwise.

Ciao!

Slapsticks - 4 - Penchant (24), Cren (32), Sonya (49), Ehndras (29)
Ehndras - 1 - Zakilevo(27)
Addridae - 1 - Velax (30)
Cren - 1 - Slapsticks (36)

not voted - Addridae

edit: fixed

Yes - next game I'll plan to kill off an NPC, rather than a player.

Well Addridae, haven't said anything, funny but  what if he is the villain and we fight each other.....

So my worries for now is, the one who admit it or the one who stay silent.  If Addridae doesn't speaks up 1 hour prior to the deadline, i will change my vote for him.

If we have 2 werewolves, we should be alright with a double kill. If we have 3, things go VERY badly if we don't. If we have 3, we'll reach parity just by killing one person today: 3 v 5 becomes 3v4 after lynch becomes 3v3 after night kill. So a double kill is the best scenario right now.

With one or more werewolves amongst them, the villagers do the only thing that they can do.  They begin to kill each other, hoping that they'll kill the menace amongst them.  They glare at each other, looking for extra hair, red eyes, or sharp teeth.  Eventually they decide from amongst themselves not one but TWO villagers who will receive a trial by fire!  Despite their protestations of innocence, the Cren and Slapsticks are tied, each to a stake, and fire is lit beneath them.  Slapsticks swears and curses as the fire dances about him, and screams out his innocence as the flames blacken his skin.  Cren also stridently declares his innocence, and the terrible mistake that is being made.  A miscarriage of justice even!  As the flames move up his legs, his cries turn into howls, as the pain turns him into his true form - that of a hulking werewolf!  Thankfully, the village specializes in Especially Strong Ropes, and so even the towering monstrosity is eventually burnt to a cinder.

Cren the werewolf was lynched
Slapsticks the innocent villager was lynched

The night is quiet and uneventful.

Out of curiosity, if a Seer or Angel dies, would it just show as them being a villager since ignorant villagers wouldn't know the difference? I wonder if Slap was a Seer and knew Cren was a Wolf. Huh.

Or maybe we just got lucky/unlucky. More probable. :P

What happened in the night after the lynching? Nothing?

Edit: does that mean that we send in night orders during the day and they're completed immediately at the end of the day with no actual night phase?

Yeah, for players who have night actions, they send them in during the day, and they're executed that night (assuming they don't get killed before they can execute their order).

Right, basically it's always day for the purpose of voting. The night phase is abbreviated and it's voting and such handled during the day as well. So, you all do your accusing and voting and then at deadline the villagers lynch someone and go to bed. Night happens and the everyone wakes up.

As the night falls, everything is quiet again. The rustling flares have died out, smog now occupies the village. A few villagers are still around the burned down werewolf, poking the ash with sticks....

Suddenly a gust of air rises from the body, startling those *courageous* villagers, who ran into different directions, thinking the werewolf to come alive.
The evil spirit rises from the ashes, searching for a new host, heading over to Castle Nraam.

Too late.. cant be unseen.

RP TIME!

The village was on chaos and turmoil after all the horrendous events that turned this rural village into an endless nightmare each night, like a movie made by Quentin Tarantino and George Romero together and…

Sonya: movie?.... Narrator, what is that? And who are those people?

My apologies! I forgot this is the medieval times. Ahemm! The people of the village was distrustful each other, and the day was even worse than the nights, where friends and family distrust each other. Sonya leave her house, taking off the ropes who was holding the doors and windows, at least in the day the werewolves wouldn’t appear, or so was thought.

Mother: do not forget to stay in the road, the forest is still dangerous, and tell grandma that I will be visiting next week. Are these apples too heavy?
Sonya:  do not worry mother, grandma house is not too far, and I can carry those, will be bask in the afternoon to help make those “magic unbreakable” ropes (…such weird logic, we could sell those and hire an army…)
Mother: did you say anything?
Sonya: no mother I have to go!

She quickly leaves and in matter of seconds becomes out of sight, her mother quickly notices something.

Mother: sighs.. that child always in a hurry, she forgot her favorite Red Riding Hood….

10 minute later out young adventurer decided to take a detour from the casual road.

Sonya: If I go through this side of the forest I get to grandma’s house is no time, I know this part of the forest like the palm of my hand.

She runs to the forest and after a while she noticed, a loud noise behind her, then she runs faster, but the noise behind her became louder and faster, then she noticed that was being followed and start to panic, wondering if a werewolf was chasing her. Quickly she decides to go to the river, with the hopes that the werewolves wouldn’t like water…(we we all know they do)

Sonya: be silence Narrator, I am just a kid, don’t give them ideas, also if we have magic ropes, here wolves doesn’t like water.

Well, is your story…but I control what happens, like this.... The hurry to reach the river make Sonya drop the basket with apples..

Sonya: that’s not fair!

She was too scared to even look back for them; whatever was following her was just a step behind, she fell the sensation that something touches her and closes the eyes. And in no time she trips with a root, on the floor she covers her head with her arms and waits for the end to come.

Voice: WE GOT HIM OVER HERE!!

She shivers as soon she heard a man voice, slowly start to uncover his head and see that some troopers arrive.

Soldier: but look is a little girl, was not..

Suddenly a nobleman walks in interrupting the trooper.

Nobleman: Was not a spy! That’s what you wanted to say, aren’t you supposed to be a trained scout?
Soldier: My apologies My lord, it was an misunderstanding, I swear…
Nobleman: Silence! Look what you have done, this poor child almost die for nothing.

The nobleman grabs Sonya’s hand and help her to stand up, she quickly lower his head and plead reverence, and yet another person arrives.

Captain: but My lord she is just a peasant, all they live is to serve us and pay taxes.
Noblemen: and for that reason we should protect the peasants, they get the food we eat and also…
Sonya: the magic rope…..
Nobleman: yes that.. Thanks
Sonya: you welcome!
Trooper: what…???

The soldier looks puzzled

Nobleman: did you pick the apples?
Soldier: Ye…yes My lord here they are.

Another soldier brings the basket with the apples, they are dirty but nothing that water couldn’t fix. Then the nobleman takes an apple and bites it.

Nobleman: pardon our rudeness; I am Gustavus Octavious, Marquis of Belus, Marshal of the Royal Army of Taselak , our scout thought you were a spy from Sandalak.
Sonya: my most sincere apologies my lord, I have heard histories about the war, it was not my intention.
Captain: where were you going? There will soon be a battle, and we aren’t sure if we can protect you.
Sonya: I was going to my grandma’s house, I thought you were werewolves and I ran.
Gustavus Octavious: yes I heard that monsters and undead are around recently, they came from some Belluterra place, but zombies are rare to see.
Sonya: we got one in our village, his name is Perth V2
Trooper: what…???
(yes again)
Sonya: but he is good, he will help us fight the werewolf.
Gustavus Octavious: Worry not, my Captain and two soldiers will escort you.
Sonya: thanks you very much, My Lord.

Then after cleaning the apples and the escort of the soldiers, Sonya arrived to her grandma’s house and then she notices her grandma a little different.

Sonya:  Oh, grandmother, what big hand you have!
Grandma: worry not my child; I just hit it with a hammer while I was getting a chair together.
Sonya: ahh ok, is good to see you are ok.

Sonya say good bye to the guards and enter her grandma’s house, being safe, at least for now.

Point of order: I thought posting in color was for ghosts/spectators. Are votes supposed to be in color as well?

They can be, and we all have so far I believe but we don't need to, it just needs to be bold.

Votes should primarily be readily visible.  So as not to invoke Godwin's Law, I'm not super specific.  Making it bold and a larger font are great.  Making it white or similar to stand out is also a plus.

Title: Day 2 / Night 2
Post by: Barek (jerm) on August 24, 2012, 09:02:34 PM
Day 2 / Night 2,

Zakilevo- 3 - Ehndras (93), Penchant (94), Velax (109)
Ehndras - 3 - Perth v2 (108), Sonya (116), Zakilevo (120)

The villagers spend the day trying to sort out who is and who is not a werewolf.  They try various methods, checking for fleas, supposed holy water, aversion to crosses and silver, but nothing seems to do the trick.

"The fire it shall be, then!" one of them cries.

They take a vote, deciding that both Zakilevo and Ehndras should be burned - just to check and see if they're werewolves, of course.  As it turns out, each of them voted for the other, and each kicks and screams and insists on his own innocence, and the obvious guilt of the other.  "I'm innocent!" cries Zakilevo, "He's the werewolf!" he points toward Ehndras.  "No, don't listen to his filthy lies - he's been the werewolf all along!" responds Ehndras.

The villagers realize that they're out of kindling, but they have a gallows handy.  Up the steps go the two accused.  Nooses are secured around their necks (hanging kills werewolves, right?)  And after a moment, the floor falls from beneath their feet.

It's not that fall that hurts, its the jerk right there at the end.

One of them twiches a little, and then both hang, twisting in the wind.  Two innocent villagers, lynched by their fellows.

Ehndras the innocent villager was lynched
Zakilevo the innocent villager was lynched

Only four are left standing there.  Perth v2, Velax, Penchant and Sonya eye each other warily for a moment.  As the first glimmer of moonlight shines over the village, Velax and Sonya glance at each other and then at the gallows and shrug before bursting into their true form - that of enormous bloodthirsty werewolves.  Penchant and Perth v2 take off in opposite directions, running for their lives, as the werewolves hungrily pursue.

Velax howls in delight as he lopes after Penchant, grinning an evil grin as he thinks of how he convinced even the mystical Seer that he was but an innocent villager.

Penchant runs as fast as he can, panting heavily. He runs through the village, trying desperately to reach the trees outside the village and potential safety. He looks over his shoulder and sees nothing there. No Perth, no werewolves. He slows down and stops next to a house at the edge of the village - the very house where the first victim was torn apart just two nights ago. The Seer looks around, but no one is there. Has he lost the bastards? A drop of liquid lands on his head and he automatically glances upward - to see a werewolf crouched on the roof of the house, slavering jaws dripping saliva. Penchant turns to run but the werewolf pounces, landing on his back and pinning him to the ground. Velax's fangs close around the Seer's neck and everything goes black...

Thanks very much to the players for playing, and to the spectators for spectating!

Velax is running Assassins: Murder in Masahakon (http://forum.battlemaster.org/index.php/topic,3070.0.html) which is still taking substitutes, and looks like it will be very entertaining.

I'll be opening up another game shortly as well, since this was a hell of a lot of fun.

GM Postmortem:

I goofed up and had too many werewolves.  9 players, 3 of whom were wolves was too much, when I started with a player getting killed off.  had we done a Day Start instead of Night Start maybe it'd have been alright.  As is, it seemed like folks had a good time.  Double-thanks to the werewolves, who helped me extend the game by not hunting on Night 1.

Without noticing for how long and how far he have run, he listen to a howl who was piercing his ears, looks back but nothing is there. Perch V2 continues to run desperately and stops at the door of his house, but he suddenly see that the door was locked and tied hardly with the Special rope.

Perch V2: who did this?

Perch grab an axe and tried to cut off the rope but he can’t.

Voice: isn’t amazing what those ropes can do?

Perch V2 looks up and see Sonya on his human form sitting in the edge of the roof, just above the door.

Sonya: still I wonder how many times I have to kill you… but zombie or anything doesn’t matter.

Perch V2 turn around and tries to run, Sonya jumping from the roof transformed back into werewolf and sinking his fang on Perch V2’s neck tackles him. Sonya’s eyes face Perch V2’s until they close, bringing an end to the last villager.

THE END!

I went ROTFL, when the two got lynched, and the seer couldn't even recognise Velax the Werewolf.

To my defence, you only get to scan one person a day and my first scanning was Ehandras, so I didn't know Velax was a werewolf, though he did vote for Cren to get lynched (a werewolf) so it seemed like he was innocent villager.
