So, an adventurer contacted one of my nobles and I couldn't help but notice his signature.
"Sir".
Obviously such an honorific is inappropriate for a commoner, but what could it be replaced with to signify donor without being immersion breaking?

Tom has said in the past that this little quirk is acceptable, since the player has shelled out hard cash to donate to the game. Not that if you couldn't find something suitable, it might not be changed. I'm just sayin'...

... a crest/emblem type of thing would be a bit cooler than sir... at least for the nobles.
but have to make army flags and family crests quite visibly different.... armies rectangular whilst crests in the form of shields, for example.
mind you.... a family crest would be even worse than sir, for advies (kills all the little family link stuff)... could consider dropping that goody for the advy part of the family?
heck... i still think advy/noble in a family should be completely unlinked.. eg..
when looking up advy, it'll only show advy part of the family (no family name either).. any advy->nobles is given some sort of message that's not too dissimilar to retirement/death
when looking up nobles, it'll only show nobles.... with no difference in the history entries between an advy->noble and a new noble. (XYZ start his/her career as a knight/dame, blah)

Squirrel actually made a prototype family crest designer. Pretty cool, really. It would record the crests of all families, and prevent duplication. Unfortunately he never got a chance to finish it, and has since gotten way too busy with RL stuff to be able to finish it.

Unfortunately, at least one Advy player (the one who I noticed this with) has said his character has been attacked by nobles for "impersonating a noble" because of the Sir tag.
I agree completely that they should have something to signify that they're donors, but that Sir is inappropriate for an adventurer. As to what... That's one of the reasons I put this here, so that it can be discussed some. I'll confess I don't exactly know what sort of titles, if any, would have been appropriate for Freemen.

Heh. I, personally, don't like having "Sir" for nobles either. I can't tell you how many times I've had people address letters to my King character with "Sir Jenred", mentioned something, and gotten a confused response about how that's what the signature says.
A crest would be awesome...I'll have to think about something else that might work.

For adventurers, why not some kind of tradesman title such as "Journeyman," or "Master" or even maybe a couple careers to choose from such as "Blacksmith," "Carpenter," or "Cobbler."

Is that any more ridiculous than the "random, worthless peasant guy who kills monsters as a hobby" ?

But adventurers aren't random worthless peasant guys. They really are "adventurers", as in, the commoners who decided to stake their futures and lives on going out and making their fortunes doing odd jobs like gathering stuff and hunting down monsters and undead. They are not by any means farmers, artisans, or craftsmen, as other commoners might be. Nobles still couldn't care less really.

Interesting option. I've seen this used a lot in various fantasy literature to refer to commoners who are skilled tradesmen, or commoners who were in positions of some type of authority.
