Title: Looking for Playtesters
Post by: Tom on May 31, 2015, 10:51:27 PM
For a new and absolutely completely different game I'm working on, I need about 4 very early alpha playtesters.

Details about the game can be found at http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/info/introduction

Right now, the whole client-side part doesn't exist and I will simulate it. We will play on the forum and/or by e-mail. I want to test the core gameplay, so many parts are unfinished, but a lot of interesting stuff exists already.

And I can promise it's cute.

To wet your appetite, here is output from my current alpha prototype:

The owner of a trade post near the market place has been quietly looking for a group of foreigners who can help him with a delicate problem. As he explains, he used to own a few crates of interesting and not strictly speaking illegal goods. Grey market material. Not outright illegal, but not exactly what you would openly display in your store. Anyway, a few nights ago it was stolen. He saw the thief when he made his escape with the final crate, and can give a few details, but he needs someone to do the legwork, find the guy and get him to talk. He is mostly afraid of losing his wares, so he wants him alive, and the goods found.

The characters begin to question the locals, leaving a coin in this beggars cup and that, talking to the whores and barkeepers in the area.  At first, only a few hints appear, but here and there they get into a bar brawl or two.
Finally, they get a solid lead and follow it.

As they enter the hideout of the thief, they are suddenly surrounded by what are probably his friends, with clubs and knives in their hands. Clearly, these brutes have a dislike of the party and after a short and unfriendly argument, weapons are drawn and combat begins.
Clearly superior, the group beats the thugs bloody and forces them into retreat.
The party takes a total of 5 points of damage, in marching order.
a fighter takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 2 points prevents serious damage.
a fighter takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 2 points prevents serious damage.
a priest takes 1 points of damage but his armour of 1 points prevents serious damage.

After a long search, the party finally nears the room where the thief is hiding, and breaks the weak bolt on the door. The guy jumps up from his bed, but too late. The heroes enter the room and surround him, and begin to threaten him, so that he reveals where the stolen goods are hidden.
Afraid for his life, he tells them everything they need to know. They check the hideout and find several chests, as the merchant described them. Then they drag the thief to the merchant and collect their just reward.
And so they returned the stolen goods and collected their reward.

Now a different party going on a different quest was less lucky:

The party arrives at the Three Headed Horse tavern and is greeted by Joe and his wife. They explain that there are really big rats down in the cellar, but they cannot afford to leave it like that, it's where they store their food and barrels of ale and wine. The heroes agree to help them out for a small sum, and enter the dark and dusty basement.

Around one corner, the party meets a pack of hungry, aggressive rats. After a moment of hesitation on both sides, the rats swarm the group and attack.

Surprisingly, a few rats are more than a match for this group of "heroes", and after a short battle, they flee the basement bleeding and ashamed.
The party takes a total of 10 points of damage, in marching order.
a fighter takes 10 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 9 hitpoints.
And so they retreat, defeated by a simple basement and its furry inhabitants. A shame to all adventurers, they crawl back into the tavern and then the street, where they collapse into a puddle of water from last nights rain.

Sure why not, I mean BM and M&F already consume all my free time, adding another of your games to the mix will hardly make my wife MORE upset.

That's a little less turn-out than I had hoped for.

Nobody interested, or nobody reading this forum?

Excellent. James also joined via FB, so we have one more slot free, but whether it is filled or not, I will begin to create parties and send them on quests (and thus shopping) very soon.

There are only 4 quests at the moment, so don't be surprised by duplicates.

James is still around? I haven't talked to him for a long time now.

Sure he is. We've been in touch on and off for almost 20 years now, if I recall correctly, back from SpellMaster times.

I've created a board for the playtest, and will split off some topics so this one can stay to be about people interested in playtesting.

...and for the first time in possibly two years, I have ventured to the forums again! Has been a very busy time for me (end of a 10 year relationship 3 years ago, then last year I got married, organised a National event for 500 people from around the country, took voluntary redundancy from my job, now this year I have moved to Scotland and have a baby due to arrive in September...)
So my time has not been as free as it used to be :)
I was only thinking earlier it was around 20 years now since I first started playing SpellMaster (Around '96 or '97 maybe...)

Anyway, hello to everyone again, hope you're all well!

Slot still available? If so,  I would like to join with Penchant's Emporium of Battle and More.

We had one guy signing in on Facebook, but he hasn't shown up yet. I only have space for 5 shops in the example town, but I'll give you his and if he shows up I'll find a solution.

Welcome to the game, post what you want to buy with your initial 1000 gold. List of items you can stock is here: http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/items

More competition?! One advice, buy a lot of potions.

I would be that Facebook guy. I'm the admin of the Mystic Arena fan page. Anyway, I had no time to get on the forum during the weekend unfortunately...

As mentioned on Facebook, the shop's name is Solid Simon's World O'Stuff

As for the description:

Solid Simon's shop seems to be far bigger than you'd expect before going in. Inside, he's obviously tried to instill a sense of trust in his customers, with badly faked framed customer testimonies such as "I only managed to defeat the Wraith Lord of Addhur because Solid Simon helped me outfit our party! - Ghurrbad, Westlands Barbarian Warlord", and "If you can't find it here, you don't need it - Orghal the Mad, Priest of Senfa the Dread Lord of Gibbering Madness" hung over the counter. Cheap oak panelling lines the walls and an old chandelier casts a broken crown of light over the assorted weapons, armors and other wares Simon has for sale. He's tried to create departments for the various categories of stuff he has for sale, but he's obviously not good at the upkeep. Swords mingle with ready-packed meals, potions lie scattered across several bins, and god knows how many rings can be found if you bow down low enough to look beneath their display stand.

Inventory:

1 Ring of Nimbleness (150)
2 Scrolls of Power (60)
2 leather armours (20)
1 +1 leather armour (40)
5 mana potions (50)
5 healing potions (50)
2 Quaffs of Power (80)
2 Quaffs of Speed (80)
1 Quaff of Resilience (40)
1 Ring of Protection (120)
2 +1 Axes (80)
1 +1 Staff (50)
3 Swords (60)
4 Knives (20)
+---------------------------
900

It's changed a bit over the weekend...

You now need bits from here: http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/sections

To be able to sell the merchandise from.

Ah. Well, assuming that comes out of the same 1000, the inventory would then become:

Section: Alchemy Corner (ID 3 - 300 Gold)
3 mana potions (ID 33 - 30 Gold)
3 healing potions (ID 32 - 30 Gold)
1 Quaff of Power (ID 38 - 40 Gold)
1 Quaff of Speed (ID 39 - 40 Gold)
1 Quaff of Resilience (ID 40 - 40 Gold)

Section: Weapon Racks (ID 1 - 200 Gold)
2 Axes (ID 6 - 20 Gold)
2 Swords (ID 9 - 40 Gold)

Section: Armour Dolls (ID 2 - 200 Gold)
2 leather armours (ID 14 - 20 Gold)

+------
960 Gold.

Wonderful. Welcome to the game. Some notes:

* Delivery of your items will take a little while (3 ticks)
* which is why you don't yet see it in your shop view, here: http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/shops/6
* for everything, if you include ID numbers, it makes my life so much easier. Check James postings in the Heroes of Westhaven topic for an example that works really good for me.

Will amend the post to include IDs, no problem. And I'll take a page from James for future posts.
