Title: Heroes of Westhaven
Post by: Tom on June 04, 2015, 02:13:34 PM
The first heroes have arrived in Westhaven, and by pure chance (well, I warned about duplicates) two groups have both been hired by the same guy for the same tasks. Seems he really wants his daughter back.

The quest is "The Missing Daughter" and the summary is:

A wealthy trader is missing his daughter and has hired the characters to find her.

That is what you know when these guys enter your shops soon:
http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/1
and
http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/2

Since they are new in town, they will select where to shop at random. They intend to spend about half their gold in the first shop, and the rest in the second they visit, and after that they will go and attempt the quest.

Since the buying-AI part is not yet done, I will simulate it like this:

I will let you know when a party enters your shop and how much money they are willing to spend. You then tell me what you will sell them and for how much gold.

Group #1 has decided to visit:

Group #2 has decided to visit:

Ok, it wasn't really completely random. I wanted to make sure everyone gets a chance.

Zak and DeLegro, you are up. Both groups intend to spend about 50 gold in your shop. Tell me what you are going to sell them.

Forget about potions! You only leave once!

club 5G - priest
staff 10G - wizard
axe 10G - thief
scale armor 25G - priest

Total: 50G

Ok, I'll send them on to James then.

Reminder: I'm doing this by hand. In all your postings, please include at the very least your shop ID #. It really helps me a lot.

Output:

Sold club to Franziskus for 5 gold
Sold scale armour to Franziskus for 25 gold
Sold axe to Chuck for 10 gold
Sold staff to Timothy for 10 gold

Your shop status can now be seen online, at least the part that is public (your inventory, anyone can count just by walking in). But I will post here what you would see if the game were more functional, this is a playtest anyway:

Zakky's Best Gear Shop
======================

Gold in Chest: 210

Inventory
---------

0 club (1 sold, total profit 0 gold)
0 staff (1 sold, total profit 0 gold)
1 sword
0 axe (1 sold, total profit 0 gold)
1 +1 staff
1 +2 staff
1 +1 axe
1 +1 sword
1 Staff of Fireball
1 leather armour
1 +1 leather armour
0 scale armour (1 sold, total profit 0 gold)
1 chain mail
5 Healing Potions
5 Mana Potions

James, your turn. The group proceeds to your shop. Now one thing you need to know is that you can't sell them things if the "slot" in their inventory is already full. I will later add replacing things, but the priest will not buy a 2nd armour, for example.

Limits are:
        'weapon' => 2,
        'armour' => 1,
        'ring' => 2,
        'item' => 3,
        'potion' => 10

Is it all being done here now or would you prefer it done through email?

At the moment, having it in one place is just so much more easy for me. Anyway it's a playtest, no need for secrecy. And this allows you to comment other peoples moves. For example it's interesting to note the Lapallanch decide to make no profit at all, apparently he is looking to build customer loyalty.

I'm guessing I am shop #4 (which has moved on the map from when I looked earlier!)

If they've just got another 50 to spend, I'll sell:
(15) +1 Leather Armour
to Chuck for 50 gold.

(as I am certainly after profit, and hoping that the benefit they get from this item will make them want to come back to me!)

Yes, you can click and check things. I'm working on putting a few things online so you don't have to ask me about them.

Sold +1 leather armour to Chuck for 50 gold

Rax's Rocks & Random Regalia
============================

Gold in Chest: 110

Inventory
---------

6 clubs
2 +1 clubs
2 staff
1 +1 staff
1 +2 staff
4 axes
1 +1 axe
1 +2 axe
2 swords
5 leather armours
0 +1 leather armour (1 sold, total profit 10 gold)
2 Girdle of Toughnesses
5 Healing Potions
5 Mana Potions

The adventurers are complete now, let's send them on their first quest and see what happens...

The quest result as the game will show it:

The young daughter of a wealthy trader has gone missing and nobody has seen her for two days. Her father is worried and has hired the characters to investigate and bring her back.

They begin by looking into her room and the house, checking for clues.
They find the flyer of a wandering circus that is in town, making their show on a field just outside the walls.
Visiting the circus, they meet the wandering folks, people free but shunned, living in their waggons, constantly on the road, welcome in many towns on the first day for the news and entertainment they bring, but disliked soon after. The wandering folks are hesitant to talk to strangers.
But the characters charm them and soon find what they suspected, the girl living in one of the waggons, having fallen in love with a juggler.
Finally, they meet the girl herself, and decide to talk some sense into her.
She objects to most of what they say, but at least she agrees to come with them to see her father and talk to him.
They return the girl to her father, as promised, and collect their reward.

Now here is what is going on behind the scenes:

Hero group Mighty Heroes runs quest daughter
Hero group Mighty Heroes tries challenge clues
...requires wisdom of at least 10 (scaled from 12)
...they have 18 plus 0 from items
...success

charm - 2.1

Loyalties
---------

Shop Zakky's Best Gear Shop: Loyalty -24
Shop Rax's Rocks & Random Regalia: Loyalty -8

So, what's going on here? The quest is light on combat, having only one and only if the heroes mess up the "talking to the wandering folks" part. In this case, they avoided combat, so all the battle gear they bought was useless, resulting in a drop in consumer loyalty. Why the overpriced +1 leather armour lead to less of a drop than the fairly priced scale armour is interesting, I will check that in detail.

The characters got some gold from this, and experience, but not enough to make a level. However, they have developed two needs: They understood that wisdom is important and while they had enough, a little bit more would be fine. They also had to use magic at one point because their natural charm was not enough, and they will now be actively looking for items that can raise charm, and will be willing to pay more for them.

Now here's the tricky part of the game: When done, you cannot stockpile immediately. All items will have delivery times. So when the characters are in your shop to buy stuff, knowing this won't help you if you didn't already get it.

I will simulate this here by not allowing you to buy additional items when a group of heroes is already in your shop.

These heroes will now go and get some drinks and enjoy their life before looking for the next quest. In the final game, they will spend gold on healing and such as well, if they suffered wounds or other damage.

Now let's give DeLegro and me a chance to play and then we will run a second round. The final game will not be in rounds, of course.

Blast! Useless fools! They should have dragged her back to her father not talk to her! What is this? A lecturing party?

Also, there should have been more item options! I expected combat not talk!

Also, they should have shields available too :o

Sales attempts for shop ID #2

I shall attempt to sell a club to the priest and the thief for 6 gold each, total of 12 gold
Sell the wizard a staff, can't tell he is a wizard without a staff for 11 gold.
And the fighters appear to be thugs rather then duellers, so I will attempt to convince them to part with 12 gold each for an axe, total 24 gold.

Grand total of 47 gold.

I sell them nothing, because I stocked up on high-priced items and they're poor beggars.

So they go on their quest:

The young daughter of a wealthy trader has gone missing and nobody has seen her for two days. Her father is worried and has hired the characters to investigate and bring her back.

They begin by looking into her room and the house, checking for clues.
They find the flyer of a wandering circus that is in town, making their show on a field just outside the walls.
Visiting the circus, they meet the wandering folks, people free but shunned, living in their waggons, constantly on the road, welcome in many towns on the first day for the news and entertainment they bring, but disliked soon after. The wandering folks are hesitant to talk to strangers.

As the characters press them for information, the wandering folks feel threatened and defend themselves.
They return to the merchant and report what has happened. He throws them out into the street, yelling at them.

This group was not charming enough, but strangely, the battle that's supposed to happen there didn't. I'll check out what happened. There's a bug in the quest, I fixed it now.
Another bug, they gain 0 gold and each living gains 50 xp, of course, not gold. As you can see, they gain XP (and sometimes gold) even for failed quest challenges.

They're coming back to town as well. But we have group 3 also.

aaand my first GM mistake :-(

Sold Ring of Ogre Strength to Sven Svenson for 100 gold

I forgot to input the price and the game automatically picks the fair price. Sorry, James, they don't have money to shop at your shop anymore. I'll send you the other group soon.

As for this one, broke and hopeful that a magical ring will save them (I fear not) they proceed on their quest:

The party arrives at the Three Headed Horse tavern and is greeted by Joe and his wife. They explain that there are really big rats down in the cellar, but they cannot afford to leave it like that, it's where they store their food and barrels of ale and wine. The heroes agree to help them out for a small sum, and enter the dark and dusty basement.

Around one corner, the party meets a pack of hungry, aggressive rats. After a moment of hesitation on both sides, the rats swarm the group and attack.

There is a short battle with biting and scratching rats, but with their combined efforts, the party defeats the rats and continues.
The party takes a total of 6 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 4 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 2 points prevents serious damage.
As they turn into a dead end, they suddenly spot the giant rat, the size of a dog. Red eyes glow in the darkness and yellow teeth shine in the light of torches as the creature approaches, growling.

Drawing their weapons, the group prepares for combat and is immediately attacked. Blows are struck and bites pierce armour and the battle rages for some time. Finally, the monster prevails, too strong and too big for the heroes.
The party takes a total of 20 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 7 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 5 hitpoints.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 4 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 7 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 6 hitpoints.
Bjorn the Quick takes 2 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
And so they retreat, defeated by a simple basement and its furry inhabitants. A shame to all adventurers, they crawl back into the tavern and then the street, where they collapse into a puddle of water from last nights rain.

Much more interesting quest. So what happened:

They meet the first pack of rats, and with no weapons or armour, they had to fight with bare hands. Thankfully, they have a wizard and that won them the fight. They got some damage (armour in this case is natural armour from toughness), but not much. They have a priest, so he could heal them.
Then they met a giant rat, and even with their magic, no chance. They took a lot more damage, but survived. They are now almost broke and desperately want to buy some weapons for the little gold they have. Also, they are still wounded. They're not very likely to visit my shop again.

And here goes our other party, trying to find a thief:

The owner of a trade post near the market place has been quietly looking for a group of foreigners who can help him with a delicate problem. As he explains, he used to own a few crates of interesting and not strictly speaking illegal goods. Grey market material. Not outright illegal, but not exactly what you would openly display in your store. Anyway, a few nights ago it was stolen. He saw the thief when he made his escape with the final crate, and can give a few details, but he needs someone to do the legwork, find the guy and get him to talk. He is mostly afraid of losing his wares, so he wants him alive, and the goods found.

The characters begin to question the locals, leaving a coin in this beggars cup and that, talking to the whores and barkeepers in the area.  At first, only a few hints appear.

Finally, they get a solid lead and follow it.
As they enter the hideout of the thief, they are suddenly surrounded by what are probably his friends, with clubs and knives in their hands. Clearly, these brutes have a dislike of the party and after a short and unfriendly argument, weapons are drawn and combat begins.

Clearly superior, the group beats the thugs bloody and forces them into retreat.
The party takes a total of 5 points of damage, in marching order.
Aaron takes 1 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
John takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Loren takes 1 points of damage but his armour of 1 points prevents serious damage.
Methild takes 1 points of damage, minus 0 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
After a long search, the party finally nears the room where the thief is hiding, and breaks the weak bolt on the door. The guy jumps up from his bed, but too late. The heroes enter the room and surround him, and begin to threaten him, so that he reveals where the stolen goods are hidden.

Afraid for his life, he tells them everything they need to know. They check the hideout and find several chests, as the merchant described them. Then they drag the thief to the merchant and collect their just reward.

And so they returned the stolen goods and collected their reward.

Behind the scenes:

So they needed a tiny bit of magic to find their clues at first, but then the battle was no problem at all, thanks to their items and the fact that they already have a lot of fighting power. They defeated the thugs easily and found their mark. They're a big group of big guys, so he quickly spilled it all.

There is little they want from this quest, but they haven't forgotten the one before, and as you can see even though they had enough strength and armour, they remember it was useful and you can never have too much, right?

Are we able to sell some of the initial bits we bought as well? (possibly at a slightly lower rate than purchased at?) My stock isn't really suited to the groups now :)

Nope. You can, of course, sell stuff to groups for less than you bought it. Yes, you can hold sales. :-)

All sales done. Interestingly, for free doesn't work, the game interprets it as default value, so you sold for 10 gold.

Mighty Heroes have choosen to visit "Zakky's Best Gear Shop" as well. They still have 30 gold.

Could not sell +1 leather armour to John. Reason: noinventory

Leather Armour is #14:
Sold leather armour to John for 11 gold
Sold leather armour to Aaron for 11 gold

I will send them on their quest a little later.

Good thing I didn't have any leather + 1 then. Tom does the game currently track the gold each shop has? Could we display it on the shop inventory page?

You can't sell to parties, only to characters. Tell me which characters you want to sell to. Remember potions are not yet implemented, they will be rated as useless in every quest and drop your customer loyalty.

Of course it does. I can display it on the shop page, but I shouldn't because it's not public info. I'm working on this authentication thing so you can enter a key and get all the hidden info for your shop displayed.

The Northmen went to save a daughter, here is how it went:

I'm not posting the details this time.

Reformed Bandits quest went smooth as well:

Aaron takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
John takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Loren takes 1 points of damage but his armour of 2 points prevents serious damage.

Sorry, I just sent them on the quest, because I needed to clear all quests. I added another one and re-balanced the existing ones a bit (they were way too easy). Now things should become a little more interesting.

They have almost no gold left now, so they begin their quest. This is actually one of the new quests I added:

They arrive at the ruin and everything seems peaceful. It doesn't take long for them to find the entrance that leads down and there is a hole in one wall in the basement, leading into another room with a spiral stairway. Much further down, in the light of lamps and torches, they see a beautiful marble hall with four doors to pick from.

The decide to go north, and as they pass the door, it slams shut behind them. Then they enter the hall of strength, and find a giant stone blocking the exit on the other side.

Try as they might, they cannot move the rock. After a long time, a magic voice says "you have failed!", and the door behind  them opens again. All the other doors are closed, leaving them no other choice than to leave the labyrinth.
They return to the town beaten and frustrated.

Big fail, and they are very, very frustrated:

Hero group Mighty Heroes runs quest labyrinth
Hero group Mighty Heroes tries challenge north
...requires strength of at least 17 (scaled from 20)
...they have 7 plus 0 from items
...using magic - they have 6

This one is a little interesting. Well, the quest itself not:

The young daughter of a wealthy trader has gone missing and nobody has seen her for two days. Her father is worried and has hired the characters to investigate and bring her back.

They begin by looking into her room and the house, checking for clues.
They find the flyer of a wandering circus that is in town, making their show on a field just outside the walls.

But behind the scenes, these characters have now advanced to level 2:

...they gain 80 gold, and each living character gains 300 xp.

Northmen are on their quest:

They arrive at the ruin and everything seems peaceful. It doesn't take long for them to find the entrance that leads down and there is a hole in one wall in the basement, leading into another room with a spiral stairway. Much further down, in the light of lamps and torches, they see a beautiful marble hall with four doors to pick from.

They pick the eastern door, and as they enter it shuts behind them. On the other side, they enter the hall of toughness. A chilling wind from nowhere pushes them back, and even the floor seems to be moving against them. The door on the other side of the room is open, with the warm glow of fire behind it, but reaching it seems impossible.

They struggle on and keep going. Step by step they come ahead, slow and slower. But finally, they reach the other end.
The labyrinth continues and finally leads them into a hall with three statues of warriors. As they enter, the door behind them closes shut, and the statues suddenly come alive! With swords and shields made from stone, they attack.

With no flesh to wound nor blood to draw, these stone warriors are formidable enemies, and even though they fight hard, the group gets beaten bloody. Just as the warriors tower above them, ready for the kill, they return to their positions and a voice says: "You failed this test, but you passed the first. You are given another chance to prove your worth."
The party takes a total of 20 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 6 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 4 hitpoints.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 4 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 8 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 5 hitpoints.
Bjorn the Quick takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 2 points prevents serious damage.
They return to the town beaten and frustrated.

Quest Completed, party now has 10 gold available for shopping.
Attributes that we would like to improve:
    * toughness (2)
    * damage (5)
    * armour (1.1)

They are now quite broke. Poor guys. Don't know what to do with them. Suggestions?

We need to start adding hammers and maces to smash those rocks. Or someone who is expert in dealing with mechanical stuff. I mean all things have a weakness or two somewhere.

Also, maybe you should add a way for financially broken parties to comeback - like doing something that doesn't require combat for awhile? Or maybe they can simply fade away if they fail too often?

I think I'll add one or two very simple quests for the low levels where heroes can get gold.
Title: Re: Heroes of Westhaven
Post by: Tom on June 06, 2015, 11:49:44 AM
My code allows for very rapid implementation of new quests. 20 minutes and I had a simple quest for the Northmen to get some gold:

The party arrives at Smallriver, a community of maybe 60 souls that is being plagued by a group of goblins from the nearby swamp. They offer the heroes a small payment for taking care of the greenskin.

Firstly, the characters need to find the creatures, and so they walk into the swamp and look for clues, paths or anything else that will help them.

The signs are, in fact, so obvious that only an idiot could miss them. The group proceeds through the swamp.
Halfway through the swamp, they are suddenly ambushed by three green goblins. Very small. They must be crazy attacking people twice times their size.

The fight is short and brutal and not very heroic. At the end, three goblins lie dead in the swamp.
The party takes a total of 5 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 2 points prevents serious damage.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 2 points prevents serious damage.
Small Willi takes 1 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
Finally, they reach the lair of the goblins. There are half a dozen huts and a chieftain.
With a display of strength, they convince the goblins to move elsewhere and leave the people here in peace.
With the goblins gone, the heroes collect their reward in Smallriver and return to the town.

Mighty Heroes:

As they follow their leads, their way takes them into a series of dangerous back alleys.
With insight and smarts, they pick the right way, avoiding the worst dangers of this low neighbourhood, except for a few unavoidable thugs.
The party takes a total of 5 points of damage, in marching order.
Franziskus takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
Timothy takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
The party takes a total of 10 points of damage, in marching order.
Franziskus takes 5 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Chuck takes 5 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.

Northmen:

The priest of the local temple of death is worried about his graveyard. There are strange noises and sounds on some nights, and the locals have begun to say that the dead are walking there. Recently, a young girl disappeared in the area.
The heroes begin their quest by asking around and checking for rumours or if anyone has actually seen anything.
They find quite a lof about the history of the town and the graveyard, helping them to prepare.
Armed with valuable information, they decide to investigate for themselves, and prepare for a nightly stay at the cemetary. Entering the graveyard, everything seems perfectly normal except for the fact that it is a dark night and among graves is the last place any sane person wants to be. But they calm their fears and look around. After quite some time, they suddenly come upon a grave that seems oddly disturbed, but before they can examine it, two skeletons jump at them with a shovel and an axe.
In terror, the heroes fight for their sheer lives, not believing what they see. But with combined efforts they defeat the creatures, smashing them into individual bones.
The party takes a total of 8 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Small Willi takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
Looking around for a clue about where the undead might come from, they discover a crypt with doors ajar. They enter.
Beyond the door, suddenly they stop, and then quickly jump out of the way as a big tree trunk comes crashing down. A trap!
They proceed deeper into the crypt, lighting torches and checking carefully every corner and every coffin. Not long after, they reach a small hall, and almost as expected, face a skeleton warrior with sword and armour, who immediately attacks.
In the darkness, the undead quickly pushes them apart and then smashes his blade into their bodies one at a time.
The party takes a total of 20 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 6 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Bjorn the Quick takes 4 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
And so they flee the graveyard, swearing to never again mess with the undead or anything related to them.

Elven Rangers:

Ethelion takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
Gwinlifin takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
Sonalthuan takes 1 points of damage but his armour of 1 points prevents serious damage.
Ethelion takes 7 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 4 hitpoints.
Gwinlifin takes 9 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 6 hitpoints.
Sonalthuan takes 4 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
And so they retreat, defeated by a simple basement and its furry inhabitants. A shame to all adventurers, they crawl back into the tavern and then the street, where they collapse into a puddle of water from last nights rain.

Northmen continue their streak of failures:

The characters have been hired by peasants from a nearby village, who say that the wolves in their area have become so aggressive, they are afraid of going into the forest, even during the day. At night, everyone stays at home and locks all doors and windows, because the wolves are even entering the village. They cannot offer much in pay, but it would be a good deed and wolf fur can be sold good as well.
The forest itself is the first challenge, drenching the characters with a sudden rain and then chilling wind, while the long march if heavy on their endurance.
But they are used to a hard life and pull through.
The party continues to search the forest, and suddenly finds itself surrounded! The forest is home to some bandits who must have their hideout nearby, because they immediately attack and announce loudly that they intend to enslave and torture their victims.
The fight is hard and long, but the characters are defeated and broken.
The party takes a total of 15 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Bjorn the Quick takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 2 points prevents serious damage.
They flee the forest and hang their heads in shame, returning to the town.

The behind-the-scenes to illustrate my new recovery code:

Hero group Northmen runs quest wolves
Hero group Northmen tries challenge forest
...requires toughness of at least 24 (scaled from 18)
...they have 24 plus 0 from items
...success
...they gain 0 gold, and each living character gains 50 xp.
Hero group Northmen tries challenge bandits
...requires damage of at least 41 (scaled from 30)
...they have 16 plus 11 from items
...using magic - they have 10
...failure
...applying 15 damage in march order:
......Sven Svenson suffers no damage (3 damage, 2 armour + 2 from items => 0)
......Kugar Bear Shaman takes 5 damage, 2 armour + 2 from items => 1
......Small Willi takes 5 damage, 1 armour + 3 from items => 1
......Bjorn the Quick suffers no damage (2 damage, 1 armour + 1 from items => 0)
Quest Failed

Character Sven Svenson rests...
Character Kugar Bear Shaman rests...
Kugar Bear Shaman lost 1 magic can recover up to 1.
Kugar Bear Shaman lost 1 hitpoints can recover up to 15.
Character Bjorn the Quick rests...
Character Small Willi rests...
Small Willi lost 1 hitpoints can recover up to 10.
Character Ortel Brim Turok rests...
Ortel Brim Turok lost 9 magic can recover up to 9.

in this case, they could recover everything, but some losses will take several quests to recover from. This replaces the old "everything refreshes at start of quest" code that I had.

Elven Rangers are more successful:

Ethelion takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
Arlon Thi Lefhlan takes 2 points of damage, minus 0 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Gwinlifin takes 1 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
Finally, they reach the lair of the goblins. There are half a dozen huts and a chieftain.
With a display of strength, they convince the goblins to move elsewhere and leave the people here in peace.
With the goblins gone, the heroes collect their reward in Smallriver and return to the town.

The forest itself is the first challenge, drenching the characters with a sudden rain and then chilling wind, while the long march if heavy on their endurance.
But they are used to a hard life and pull through.
After searching through the forest for a while, they indeed do find a group of wolves. The beasts are not as aggressive as described, but they do not run away, either, and so the heroes attack.
Blades are no match for teeth, and the characters win this encounter.
The party takes a total of 8 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.

The party continues to search the forest, and suddenly finds itself surrounded! The forest is home to some bandits who must have their hideout nearby, because they immediately attack and announce loudly that they intend to enslave and torture their victims.
The party prevails in this battle, though the fight was hard.
The party takes a total of 12 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 4 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Small Willi takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Finally, very deep in the forest, the characters find the wolf lair. The wolves, meanwhile, welcome the fact that food now comes to them instead of running away, and very fast a pack has surrounded the party.
The characters win the fight and burn the lair, scattering the wolves.
The party takes a total of 16 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 4 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 7 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
With the lair destroyed, the situation returns to normal. There are some wolves in the forest, but not unbearably many, and most of them are now shy of humans. The peasants are very thankful and pay what they can.

Academy Expedition Group is on the quest Rats in the Basement

The party arrives at the Three Headed Horse tavern and is greeted by Joe and his wife. They explain that there are really big rats down in the cellar, but they cannot afford to leave it like that, it's where they store their food and barrels of ale and wine. John of Earling takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
Ben Bonefinger takes 3 points of damage, minus 0 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
As they find their way through the basement rooms, suddenly a small draft makes one of the torches flicker and they stop. A quick search reveals a hidden door. Carefully, they open it.
Just in time they see the tiny mechanism that is inside the frame and with some swift fingerwork, disarm it. As the door opens, a vial of poison gas becomes visible above the door. Inside is a storage room with long forgotten valuables.
All the foes vanquished, the party returns victorious, collecting their promised reward and free drinks for the rest of the month.

Academy Expedition Group is on the quest The Missing Daughter

She disagrees with everything the party says, and refuses to come with them. There is nothing more they can do.
They return to the merchant and report what has happened. He throws them out into the street, yelling at them.

Northmen is on the quest The Labyrinth

Sven Svenson has gained a level and is now level 3.
Kugar Bear Shaman has gained a level and is now level 3.
Bjorn the Quick has gained a level and is now level 3.
Small Willi has gained a level and is now level 3.
Ortel Brim Turok has gained a level and is now level 3.
The labyrinth continues and finally leads them into a hall with three statues of warriors. As they enter, the door behind them closes shut, and the statues suddenly come alive! With swords and shields made from stone, they attack.
The group gives their best and with combined efforts, they manage to defeat their foes, shattering them into pieces.
The party takes a total of 16 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 7 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 7 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
In the next room they reach, all doors slam shut as they enter and the ceiling begins to move down. A voice speaks: "This is the test of power. Stop the roof with your combined power, or be crushed underneath." and then falls silent. The heroes brace and push as the ceiling reaches their shoulder height.
With combined strength, they manage to stop it, then push it up a little. As they do so, it starts to lift again.
After a few turns, they arrive in the next hall. White clouds begin to fill it as soon as they all enter, and a voice speaks: "This is the test of smarts. There is a hidden door, hinted at by the signs on the walls. Find it in time or suffocate."
They quickly begin to search the walls and decipher the ancient symbols. Most of them make no sense, but some of them seem to follow a line, circling around a certain spot. They press the stone in its middle and a door opens.
Sven Svenson takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 7 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 4 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.

interestingly, there seems to be a bug in the quest at this point and it doesn't proceed to the end. Hmpf.

I have given all shops 400 gold because sections were added without warning.

Also, I think we need to split this topic up somehow, I'm afraid if you come back after not reading for a day, there's like 3 pages to read.

I looked at some of the character pages, for example http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/characters/11 list the usage of his healing potion at 16. I assumed that was how many times he has used the item in quests.

Northmen is on the quest The Town Graveyard

The party takes a total of 12 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 6 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 6 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
After the battle, a total of 4 hitpoints were healed using prayers.
They fight as a group, coordinating their strikes well, but the warrior is strong. He lands several blows before he is finally defeated.
The party takes a total of 15 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 4 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 6 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 4 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Bjorn the Quick takes 1 points of damage but his armour of 2 points prevents serious damage.
After the battle, a total of 2 hitpoints were healed using prayers.
Deeper and deeper they proceed into the tunnels of the crypt. Suddenly, the tunnel collapses around them, showering them with rocks.
With combined strength, they quickly clear free themselves from the stones and proceed, with some bruises and covered in dust.
The party takes group damage of 5 points each.
Sven Svenson takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Bjorn the Quick takes 5 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Ortel Brim Turok takes 5 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
After the battle, a total of 4 hitpoints were healed using prayers.
Another tunnel and another hall, this one seems wet and moist, and they look around, expecting a hole in the ceiling where rain comes in,  when suddenly the floor drops and they get dumped into icy-cold water.
Fortunately, they are used to worse weather and after some struggling, escape the trap.
The party takes a total of 10 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 4 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Small Willi takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Bjorn the Quick takes 1 points of damage but his armour of 2 points prevents serious damage.
The party takes group damage of 4 points each.
Sven Svenson takes 4 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 4 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Bjorn the Quick takes 4 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 4 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Ortel Brim Turok takes 4 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
"More skeletons", they think as they turn onto another tunnel with half a dozen undead, armed with knives, clubs and improvised weapons.
The battle is short, but serious. At the end, the skeletons lie shattered on the floor.
The party takes a total of 15 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 4 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 6 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Bjorn the Quick takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 2 points prevents serious damage.
It feels like they have been walking through these halls for ages, but finally they have arrived at an ornamented door,  clearly leading into the main chamber. They prepare for battle before they enter.
Luckily, they spot the trap in time and disarm it. Such a nasty surprise!
Inside the chamber, an ancient undead wizard awaits them. A lich! They had heard rumours of these creatures, but the reality is much worse than anything they imagined. Armed with powerful magic and a twisted mind, the creatures is a frightening enemy, and he is not amused about the disturbance.
The fight is joined with swords and magic, and the powerful creature strikes true again and again, while the heroes can barely get close to him. But together, they stand up to his vile magic, and push forward, finally cornering him and, with a final, combined effort, snuffing out his unlife.
The party takes a total of 20 points of damage, in marching order.
Sven Svenson takes 6 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 7 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 4 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Bjorn the Quick takes 3 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
The party takes group damage of 5 points each.
Sven Svenson takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Kugar Bear Shaman takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Bjorn the Quick takes 5 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Small Willi takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Ortel Brim Turok takes 5 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
With the restless dead now resting in peace, they party plunders the main hall for treasure and returns to the temple, victorious.

Mighty Heroes is on the quest The Labyrinth

They arrive at the ruin and everything seems peaceful. It doesn't take long for them to find the entrance that leads down and there is a hole in one wall in the basement, leading into another room with a spiral stairway. Much further down, in the light of lamps and torches, they see a beautiful marble hall with four doors to pick from.
The decide to go north, and as they pass the door, it slams shut behind them. Then they enter the hall of strength, and find a giant stone blocking the exit on the other side.
With combined strength, the push the rock aside and continue.

After a few turns, they arrive in the next hall. White clouds begin to fill it as soon as they all enter, and a voice speaks: "This is the test of smarts. There is a hidden door, hinted at by the signs on the walls. Find it in time or suffocate."
The ancient symbols make no sense and resemble no known language. They attempt for a long time, but cannot figure out what it all means or how it shows a door. Finally, one by one they run out of breath as the white mist fills their lungs. Just before they pass out, the clouds lift and the voice says: "You failed this test, but you passed the first. Continue and  prove that you are worthy in another challenge."
The party takes group damage of 6 points each.
Franziskus takes 6 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Chuck takes 6 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 4 hitpoints.
Timothy takes 6 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
After the battle, a total of 5 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

In the next room they reach, all doors slam shut as they enter and the ceiling begins to move down. A voice speaks: "This is the test of power. Stop the roof with your combined power, or be crushed underneath." and then falls silent. The heroes brace and push as the ceiling reaches their shoulder height.
Try as they might, they cannot stop this trap, and one by one fall to the ground. The ceiling lands on them and begins to crush them, but then stops and lifts. The voice says: "You fail this task, but you passed the first, so you can continue and prove your worth on another challenge."
The party takes group damage of 6 points each.
Franziskus takes 6 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Chuck takes 6 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 4 hitpoints.
Timothy takes 6 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.

Just as the warriors tower above them, ready for the kill, they return to their positions and a voice says: "You failed". Then it falls silent, and the warriors return to their positions. The door ahead stays shut.
The party takes a total of 22 points of damage, in marching order.
Franziskus takes 14 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 11 hitpoints.
Chuck takes 8 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 6 hitpoints.
They return to the town beaten and frustrated.

Reformed Bandits is on the quest Finding a Thief

The party takes a total of 14 points of damage, in marching order.
Aaron takes 6 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
John takes 5 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Loren takes 3 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
After the battle, a total of 5 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

As they follow their leads, their way takes them into a series of dangerous back alleys.
With insight and smarts, they pick the right way, avoiding the worst dangers of this low neighbourhood, except for a few unavoidable thugs.
The party takes a total of 9 points of damage, in marching order.
Aaron takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 3 points prevents serious damage.
John takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Loren takes 3 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Methild takes 1 points of damage but his armour of 1 points prevents serious damage.
John has gained a level and is now level 2.
Aaron has gained a level and is now level 2.
Loren has gained a level and is now level 2.
Methild has gained a level and is now level 2.
Samuel the Wise has gained a level and is now level 2.
After the battle, a total of 1 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

Samuel the Wise takes 1 points of damage, minus 0 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
After the battle, a total of 4 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

They are. In this case, all their stuff was useful, even if they eventually failed, but they can't blame it on the items.

Ortel 13 appears to have two weapons...

Yes, the limit for weapons is 2. Characters can have two weapons. Right now that means 2 staffs, I don't count "hands" as some games do.

Damn... Was hoping they were up for the double cost as they saw armour increase as being 2.8 factor of importance... Is it a slightly random value each time (which would make sense so that people don't just have simple calcs to do to work out exactly what the max is they could sell for each time)

Can I try again? :)

The ivory elephants is on the quest Finding a Thief

The owner of a trade post near the market place has been quietly looking for a group of foreigners who can help him with a delicate problem. As he explains, he used to own a few crates of interesting and not strictly speaking illegal goods. Grey market material. Not outright illegal, but not exactly what you would openly display in your store. Anyway, a few nights ago it was stolen. He saw the thief when he made his escape with the final crate, and can give a few details, but he needs someone to do the legwork, find the guy and get him to talk. He is mostly afraid of losing his wares, so he wants him alive, and the goods found.
The player of Theodore Kermit Hyde could not make it this evening and the quest will be without him.
The characters begin to question the locals, leaving a coin in this beggars cup and that, talking to the whores and barkeepers in the area.  At first, only a few hints appear.
Finally, they get a solid lead and follow it.
They gain 0 gold, and each living character gains 50 xp.

As they follow their leads, their way takes them into a series of dangerous back alleys.
With insight and smarts, they pick the right way, avoiding the worst dangers of this low neighbourhood, except for a few unavoidable thugs.
The party takes a total of 9 points of damage, in marching order.
Harndorger Ebonrule takes 4 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Matthew Hyde takes 3 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Odalbuah Blooddragon takes 2 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
They gain 20 gold, and each living character gains 100 xp.
After the battle, a total of 1 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

After the battle, a total of 1 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

The party takes a total of 14 points of damage, in marching order.
Harndorger Ebonrule takes 4 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Odalbuah Blooddragon takes 6 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 5 hitpoints.
Matthew Hyde takes 4 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
They gain 30 gold, and each living character gains 100 xp.
After the battle, a total of 1 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

They gain 100 gold, and each living character gains 200 xp.
And so they returned the stolen goods and collected their reward.

Quest Completed, party now has 190 gold available for shopping.

Reformed Bandits is on the quest Goblin Hunt

The party arrives at Smallriver, a community of maybe 60 souls that is being plagued by a group of goblins from the nearby swamp. They offer the heroes a small payment for taking care of the greenskin.

Firstly, the characters need to find the creatures, and so they walk into the swamp and look for clues, paths or anything else that will help them.
The signs are, in fact, so obvious that only an idiot could miss them. The group proceeds through the swamp.
They gain 10 gold, and each living character gains 50 xp.

Halfway through the swamp, they are suddenly ambushed by three green goblins. Very small. They must be crazy attacking people twice times their size.
The fight is short and brutal and not very heroic. At the end, three goblins lie dead in the swamp.
The party takes a total of 9 points of damage, in marching order.
Aaron takes 4 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
John takes 2 points of damage but his armour of 4 points prevents serious damage.
Loren takes 3 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
They gain 20 gold, and each living character gains 100 xp.
After the battle, a total of 2 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

Finally, they reach the lair of the goblins. There are half a dozen huts and a chieftain.
With a display of strength, they convince the goblins to move elsewhere and leave the people here in peace.
They gain 50 gold, and each living character gains 100 xp.
With the goblins gone, the heroes collect their reward in Smallriver and return to the town.

Quest Completed, party now has 96 gold available for shopping.

Elven Rangers is on the quest The Labyrinth

They arrive at the ruin and everything seems peaceful. It doesn't take long for them to find the entrance that leads down and there is a hole in one wall in the basement, leading into another room with a spiral stairway. Much further down, in the light of lamps and torches, they see a beautiful marble hall with four doors to pick from.
The player of Sonalthuan could not make it this evening and the quest will be without him.

Quest Completed, party now has 55 gold available for shopping.
Attributes that we would like to improve:

Yeah, they failed because someone didn't come. Don't want to be him next day in class. :-)

Mighty Heroes is on the quest Wolves in the Forest -- continuing their saga of misery:

The characters have been hired by peasants from a nearby village, who say that the wolves in their area have become so aggressive, they are afraid of going into the forest, even during the day. At night, everyone stays at home and locks all doors and windows, because the wolves are even entering the village. They cannot offer much in pay, but it would be a good deed and wolf fur can be sold good as well.

The forest itself is the first challenge, drenching the characters with a sudden rain and then chilling wind, while the long march if heavy on their endurance.
But they are used to a hard life and pull through.
They gain 0 gold, and each living character gains 50 xp.
After the battle, a total of 5 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

After searching through the forest for a while, they indeed do find a group of wolves. The beasts are not as aggressive as described, but they do not run away, either, and so the heroes attack.
Blades are no match for teeth, and the characters win this encounter.
The party takes a total of 7 points of damage, in marching order.
Franziskus takes 4 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Chuck takes 3 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
They gain 10 gold, and each living character gains 150 xp.

The forest itself is the first challenge, drenching the characters with a sudden rain and then chilling wind, while the long march if heavy on their endurance.
They cough as they finally arrive, not being used to such hardships.
Everyones toughness attribute is reduced by 1.

The fight is hard and long, but the characters are defeated and broken.
The party takes a total of 13 points of damage, in marching order.
Franziskus takes 10 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 7 hitpoints.
Chuck takes 3 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.

    * damage (7)
    * armour (2.4)

In case you missed it:
Everyones toughness attribute is reduced by 1.

This is going to be tough. Attributes recover slowly. After each quest, every character has a 50% chance of recovering 1 point in a reduced attribute.

Now who is going to support these poor lads so they can get back on their feet? Check out the parties page to see who they are shopping at (same for all the others).

The party prevails in this battle, though the fight was hard.

Finally, very deep in the forest, the characters find the wolf lair. The wolves, meanwhile, welcome the fact that food now comes to them instead of running away, and very fast a pack has surrounded the party.
There are too many wolves and not enough heroes, and in this fight of beast vs. men, the beasts win.

I think it would be less tedious if we can just put what item we want to sell without putting the price since it is becoming apparently obvious everyone wants to sell their goods for max profit. I think it would be better to only state your item price when you do not want to sell it for max profit at this point.

I have sold generally at 10% markup. Several times I have sold for no profit and even substantially under cost when I was trying to gear up my favourite bands and generate more positive loyalty to me.

Yes, I purposely focused on equipment I though would be both used a lot, and not immediately replaced. I assumed high Loyalty would mean they visit my shop far more often, allowing me to basically control their equipment and set them up to be successful at quests, bringing me more gold :) Certainly the Northmen seem to visit me frequently.

I never added such a function because in the final game, prices will be less obvious. You will have an estimate of the max price you can ask, but not a precise number, and you will take risks, because every time you try too high, customer loyalty drops a little.

The ivory elephants is on the quest Rats in the Basement

The party takes a total of 7 points of damage, in marching order.
Harndorger Ebonrule takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 6 points prevents serious damage.
Matthew Hyde takes 2 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
Odalbuah Blooddragon takes 2 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 1 hitpoints.
They gain 10 gold, and each living character gains 100 xp.
After the battle, a total of 2 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

As they turn into a dead end, they suddenly spot the giant rat, the size of a dog. Red eyes glow in the darkness and yellow teeth shine in the light of torches as the creature approaches, growling.
Drawing their weapons, the group prepares for combat just as the giant rat jumps on them. After a few blows and bites, it is over and the beast lies dead and defeated on the ground.
The party takes a total of 9 points of damage, in marching order.
Harndorger Ebonrule takes 3 points of damage but his armour of 6 points prevents serious damage.
Matthew Hyde takes 3 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Odalbuah Blooddragon takes 3 points of damage, minus 1 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
They gain 20 gold, and each living character gains 200 xp.
After the battle, a total of 4 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

They gain 60 gold, and each living character gains 100 xp.
All the foes vanquished, the party returns victorious, collecting their promised reward and free drinks for the rest of the month.

With combined strength, the push the rock aside and continue.
They gain 10 gold, and each living character gains 100 xp.

Genaro Jere Chen takes 6 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Itastudd Lakebranch takes 6 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 4 hitpoints.
Shon Vazquez takes 6 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Usaharohr Flamebat takes 6 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 4 hitpoints.
After the battle, a total of 12 hitpoints were healed using prayers.

Genaro Jere Chen takes 6 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
Itastudd Lakebranch takes 6 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 4 hitpoints.
Shon Vazquez takes 6 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 3 hitpoints.
Usaharohr Flamebat takes 6 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 4 hitpoints.

Just as the warriors tower above them, ready for the kill, they return to their positions and a voice says: "You failed". Then it falls silent, and the warriors return to their positions. The door ahead stays shut.
The party takes a total of 25 points of damage, in marching order.
Genaro Jere Chen takes 11 points of damage, minus 4 points of armour, losing 7 hitpoints.
Shon Vazquez takes 10 points of damage, minus 3 points of armour, losing 7 hitpoints.
Usaharohr Flamebat takes 4 points of damage, minus 2 points of armour, losing 2 hitpoints.
They return to the town beaten and frustrated.

Heroes went on quests:

http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/3 (http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/3)
http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/6 (http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/6)
http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/8 (http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/8)

we've had some nice successes there and some level gains. This one was quite impressive: http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/quests/6/log (http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/quests/6/log)

Update:
I've decided to send them all on quests, and this here happened:

http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/quests/12/log

What it doesn't show (need to add that!) is this what I see in the debug log:

Hero group Reformed Bandits tries challenge lich
...requires damage of at least 41 (scaled from 30)
...they have 18 plus 14 from items
...using magic - they have 8
...failure
...applying 34 damage (scaled from 30) in march order:
......Aaron takes 14 damage, 3 armour + 1 from items => 10
Character Aaron died.
......John takes 12 damage, 3 armour + 1 from items => 8
......Loren takes 7 damage, 1 armour + 1 from items => 5
Character Loren died.
......Methild suffers no damage (1 damage, 0 armour + 1 from items => 0)
...applying 7 damage to all characters:
......John takes 7 damage, 3 armour + 1 from items => 3
......Methild takes 7 damage, 0 armour + 1 from items => 6
Character Methild died.
......Samuel the Wise takes 7 damage, 0 armour + 0 from items => 7
Character Samuel the Wise died.
Quest Failed
John lost 17 hitpoints can recover up to 18.
Aaron is dead, but can be revived.
...revived for 300 gold.
Loren is dead, but can be revived.
...but party does not have the required 300 gold.
...player decided to wait, maybe after the next quest?
Methild is dead, but can be revived.
...but party does not have the required 300 gold.
...player decided to wait, maybe after the next quest?
Samuel the Wise is dead, but can be revived.
...but party does not have the required 300 gold.
...player decided to wait, maybe after the next quest?

So 4 of them died, and then they spent almost all their gold on reviving one of them. 3 other characters can be revived, and their players have decided to wait if maybe after the next quest, the group has enough gold to do so. This is going to be interesting...

(and I need to add code to show character deaths in the quest log, and revivals, and also prevent the selling of items to dead characters...)

I don't think I've seen anyone use a healing potion yet, but then the priest usually manage to heal with prayer, or the part has failed anyway. Perhaps when characters have more hit points.

No, potions are fully functional. See for example: http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/quests/2/log (http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/quests/2/log)

But they will not waste a healing potion if they lost only a few hitpoints, as it restores 5.

Yeah you really should. Why not add equipment durability as well?

Maybe they lose 1 durability for every time they attack(weapon) and get hit(armor)? And when you get hit you have a certain chance of losing durability on your accessories like rings and other stat boosting items?
Title: Re: Heroes of Westhaven

No, durability is one stat too many to track, and besides, in my experience in pen & paper roleplaying games, the main reason you lose items is not durability. It's that they get stolen, lost or break in fights.

I'm already half way to implementing item loss. It will come.

Meanwhile, item replacement is a real necessity. And maybe damage should scale higher, with all values doubled, giving more space for a wider variety of weapons and armour.
Title: Re: Heroes of Westhaven
Post by: Zakilevo on June 10, 2015, 07:39:57 AM
Maybe different weapons should do different things? It seems we just have 3 or 4 weapons with just different names since the only thing different about all weapons is who can use it not different uses.

Something interesting happened with http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/2 (http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/2)

Loren is dead, but can be revived.
...but party does not have the required 300 gold.
...player decided to wait, maybe after the next quest?
Methild is dead, but can be revived.
...but party does not have the required 300 gold.
...player decided to start a new character.
rolling replacement character for Methild
...decided to make another thief
Samuel the Wise is dead, but can be revived.
...but party does not have the required 300 gold.
...player decided to start a new character.
rolling replacement character for Samuel the Wise
...group is lacking these classes: priest, wizard
Creating new character of class wizard

My replacing-dead-characters code is working!

As you can see, as in so many rpg groups, the player of Methild decided to make another character of the same kind he's already playing. The player of Samuel, on the other hand, looked what classes the group is lacking and then decided to make a wizard. Ok, also the same he already had, but you see how it works, he actually checked the group interests.

And now they have two brand new level 1 characters without any equipment.

Groups http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/1 and http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/api/parties/5 also ran their quests.

Another round was run, and a lot happened.

Reformed Bandits basically exchanged all their characters after a series of failures so bad they didn't even get any gold.

And there are two new and very dangerous quests that have been selected, Clearing the Road and Deathtrap Dungeon.

Now that everything is more complete and more interactive, how about you post another round to the feedback topic? I'd like to see what you think now that deliveries are not instand, you don't have to wait for me anymore to do anything and so on.

It's become a lot more quiet here since you can manage your shops yourself.

It makes it difficult for me to estimate when to run a turn. I would like to run a turn a little later, because I have finally written a turn script that will run everything (parties shopping, going on quests ,coming back, picking new quests and shops, deliveries, statistics and so on). And I would like to test it, of course.

I sold all I could to one group and had nothing to sell to the others... So my two are ready to go.

Turn was just run:

Simulating Gaming Evenings...
   Party The ivory elephants:
      is currently shopping.
      has finished shopping.
   Party Mighty Heroes:
      is looking for new adventures.
   Party Northmen:
      is currently shopping.
      has finished shopping.
   Party The tolim:
      is currently shopping.
will continue in a different shop.
   Party Academy Expedition Group:
      is looking for new adventures.
   Party Elven Rangers:
      is currently shopping.
      has finished shopping.
   Party The nerix:
      is currently shopping.
will continue in a different shop.
   Party Reformed Bandits:
      is currently shopping.
      has finished shopping.

So some groups are now exiting the town to go questing. Their quests will be run at the next turn, and then they return to the town.

I added that today. The simulation of movement is also so they can go to a different town after the quest, maybe. There's a lot that is on the drawing board, but not yet done.

Which would be more - force the players (of the party) to scrap this group and start a new one?

I know I've had characters in the past that I would have taken ridiculous options to keep them alive somehow...

Well I see few ways.

1) My suggestion of getting rid of 'broke and can't succeed anymore' parties. Leaving them in the player history as failures.

2) Let them borrow equipment and pay back later with a bit of premium. This will be risky to shopkeepers.

3) Let shopkeepers invest in such a party but in return take everything that party earns for a certain number of missions. If the party they invested in fails, take all their stuff back maybe?
Title: Re: Heroes of Westhaven

They could also simply SELL equipment (back to shops) at half price or something.

Not if their party is new(technically new since their original party got wiped out) and has nothing on them with almost no gold.

Maybe you can let them have maybe few items from dead members that they can sell? Maybe they should only be allowed to sell items of dead members instead of using them themselves.

Edit: Maybe you can say those retrieved items are not in good conditions and only shopkeers can make them good enough to be sold again.

Have new characters have some starting gold when they join the party.

That is a nice and neat solution. Maybe 35% of their total net worth maybe? Or 10% of their experience?

I've now changed starting gold to be based on character, not group. That means new characters also add gold to the party, and new parties now have starting gold depending on the number of characters in the group.

Ok, here is how exchanging items works: You tell me what you want to exchange for whom. Basically, like a sale, but additionally, which item to replace. This I will have to resolve manually, so please use sparingly.

Shop 3 will sell

12 to 13 for 444 gold
5 for 13 for 238 gold
Title: Re: Heroes of Westhaven
Post by: Zakilevo on June 16, 2015, 10:05:03 AM
If it doens't work well you get the idea. I just want to sell those two items for max profit and take all the gold from Northmen.
Title: Re: Heroes of Westhaven
Post by: Tom on June 16, 2015, 10:15:29 AM
It works like this:

You say "hey, I see you have an axe. Nice, but a little used. Look, I have a wonderful +1 sword. I know usually you'd say you already have a weapon, but look at it as an upgrade. I'll even make it a little cheaper."

You offer an item for sale as normal, except that you also select which item to replace.

They will think about it. They will consider the old item. Someone without weapon will be willing to pay more for the +1 sword than someone who already has one. Basically, he'll be willing to pay for the difference he gets, not the whole thing.

The old item is lost on replacement.

Post by: Zakilevo on June 16, 2015, 10:25:00 AM
I have no way of knowing how much they paid for those items though. Can you calculate that for me? Or are we basing this on the actual item value from the item list?
Title: Re: Heroes of Westhaven
Post by: Tom on June 16, 2015, 10:27:25 AM
Sold Staff of Fireball to Ortel Brim Turok for 444 gold
Could not sell +2 staff to Ortel Brim Turok. Reason: no_replace

Details on that failed sale, to explain how it works:
Ortel Brim Turok is willing to pay 222 gold for +2 staff
Ortel Brim Turok thinks his/her +1 staff is worth 33 gold.
calculated net value = -49

which means he thinks you are 49 gold too expensive.

This is based on the item value, not what they paid.

It's not the final word. This system makes it almost impossible to replace high-value items, even with better ones, and still make a profit. I will refine the system more, but for the moment, it suffices.

No. See somewhere else. We don't do used items.

This is his "mental value". Basically he thinks "yeah, this thing is worth 200 gold. It gives +4. So it's like 50 gold for every +1. But I already have something that gives me +2 so really I only get another +2, so it's like 100 gold for every +1, wow, that's expensive!"

Nobody said they're entirely rational, these heroes. :-)

Yes, there's no sensible business in the way they are choosing to do things. If we were to get the gold for the value they thought their item was worth then it might work, or sell at the price they are prepared to buy our items for and the party gets the gold for what they thought the old should be worth (but not taken from the shops).
Title: Re: Heroes of Westhaven
Post by: Tom on June 16, 2015, 12:41:21 PM
Remember that their evaluation can be much above your purchase price.

For example, that wizard DID pay 222 gold for the stuff that you bought at 200 gold. He was actually willing to pay more, something around 240 gold. So you can still make a profit there.

The problem right now is if he already owns a Staff of Fireball (200 gold) and you want to sell him a (hypothetical) Staff of Fireball +1 (300 gold). He will think his existing staff is worth around 100 gold, and the +1 might be worth 390 to him, but because of that he'll only pay 290 - a loss for you.

Seems a very high value to be paying every turn, especially with parties that don't really spend much/anything in the shop. What is the maintenance figure based on?

I am actually thinking about adding achievements, and one of them would be for taking every last gold coin from a party. Maybe it's too easy. :-)

Considering I did it to two parties yes. Firstly you can always sell at a loss to do it. Secondly the fact that characters will carry in excess of 5 potions makes it easy to finish off those small amounts. If you want an achievement it should be along the lines of >x% on a single item, bleeding a party dry with one sale (limit it to parties with more then x gold)

Seems a very high value to be paying every turn, especially with parties that don't really spend much/anything in the shop. What is the maintenance figure based on?

I like it, forces you to keep an actual gold reserve.

Maintenance is explained, actually: http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/info/shop

However, right now it is paid per turn, not per week, but at half the usual amount.

Probably it is too much or too little - very little balancing has been done so far. Keep that in mind, please.

Maintenance is explained, actually: http://shopkeeper.lemuria.org/info/shop

However, right now it is paid per turn, not per week, but at half the usual amount.

Probably it is too much or too little - very little balancing has been done so far. Keep that in mind, please.

I had read that... Forgot... I guess until the general flow is sorted it will be difficult to tie down. Once a better idea is got of an average amount of parties/gold passing through each week it will be easier to work out what it should be.

might be an issue with shields... Trying to sell them and get the error: no_space
first one had two axes so thought that might make sense, second one only has leather armour though, so should be able to take a shield

tried selling:
44 to 54
43 to 63

Shields count as weapons, so if he doesn't have 2 weapons, he should be able to buy it.

The priest only had leather armour at the time, nothing else, and it gave the no_space error. I've since sold him a couple of clubs instead.

That's normal. Reputation drops if you do nothing to gain more.

*Changes* were invisible, because for some bug reputation had jumped into the thousands, and there you don't see +5 or +10. :-)

I was selling stuff, at reasonable prices and my reputation continued to drop. Since it is just a number with no feedback or explanation, there is no way to know why it is changing. At the time it seemed like every ones reputation was dropping

Everyones reputation is dropping all the time, and it drops by percent (I think 2% per turn). But it was up in the hundreds and thousands, and the good you did added +8 or +10 so it was invisible.

Reputation should be much better now.

Ahh see now what you are trying to say makes sense. As reputation drop is proportional to existing reputation, and reputation gain is not, there was no way with the large reputations we had to actually gain any further.

Right now, reputation has no effect.

One of the effects it will have is like loyalty, but independent of parties, so it affects all parties even those who have never been to your shop before. It will also have other effects that have to do with the endgame gameplay that is still a bit secret.

Yeah, similar.

The basic idea is that customer loyalty you can get by making your customers *happy*. But reputation you get if your customers are successful and talk about it.

Make a super long quest that requires multiple stats maybe? I feel that most quests are too focused on few stats - damage and armor.

Also, will quests always have only one way to beat them?

Damage and armour are strong because they are used in fights. That's fine, I already tuned it so weapons and armour are rated less by use count.

Most quests already require multiple stats. Any many quests have more than one way to beat them.

What I don't yet have and maybe want to add is that at least some challenges can be solved with alternate stats, aka you can win it by dexterity or by strength.

I thought about adding how many other parties are shopping in your place as a factor, however I realized it works both ways: Yeah, they don't want overcrowded places, but at the same time, if other people come there, it must be good, yes?

Remember we go by days. The assumption is that they are not sitting in your shop the entire day, so the overcrowding is fairly limited.

If no parties visit your shop, maybe you should check if you make enough advertisement? Spend money on a shop sign and such, maybe?

another turn happened, including this:

Shop Zakky's Best Gear Shop could not pay 24 gold maintenance and is now broke.

I don't yet have code to handle that, so for now nothing will happen, go on and sell more things to recover.

Meh. I am not really attached to any particular character. I doubt having a line or two of their background story will interest me that much.

Only character I was interested is gone now. Sven :(

I think I am playing this wrong. I would have loved it if I were on the other side. Doing quests not selling crap!

Well, this is the game for the other side. There are plenty of dungeon crawlers already.

But please, use the feedback topic to tell me what you find interesting, what you find lacking, that is what this test is for!

Hah, I've got a Monty Python's Cheese Shop sketch thing going.

"Do you, in fact, have any items in this shop?"
"Yes."
"Really?"
"No."

Two parties hanging around waiting for me to pull something out from under the counter. Wait for two more days, guys. Get comfortable, I've got coffee. ;)

Heh. They can come to me!

Too bad parties don't go to other shops that often anymore. They just go straight to quests.

Maybe there should be something like a 'ready meter' or preparedness so they stick around a bit longer if they failed to buy anything.

Database crash resulted in total loss of data today.

Since Shopkeeper is still in very early alpha development, I don't really have a database backup, I'm afraid. I'm checking if I can restore from the automated backup or not.

Ok, here's the status:

I have access to the old database, but it's a little bit of hell to recover it.

I'm thinking about not recovering it, and instead pausing the test for a week, fixing a couple things, and then starting again. What you guys think?

Whatever is most beneficial for game development really. No point you spending hours recovering bits of it doesn't actually progress things (though it will be a shame to lose everything I had gained, that's what to expect in alpha :) )

Yup, having nothing to do every now and then is fine. Having nothing to do for three turns straight and counting, that just results in people losing interest.

May I ask what improvements you are speaking of?

I am ending the first alpha test here, so I can update the code and add all the cute additional things that I made that are too tricky to add into the game while it's running.

Thank you all so much for contributing. Your feedback and your actions in the game were incredibly helpful.

As a short summary, together we accomplished the following:

The most profitable items over all were the Ring of Protection (by far), followed by the Ring of Ogre Strength, Staff of Fireball and Mana Potions.
The least profitable items over all were the +1 and +2 leather armours and the club and knife.

The easiest quest was "Finding a Thief", 16 out of 21 attempts successful or maybe "Wolves in the Forest", 5 out of 6 successful.
The most difficult quest was "Labyrinth" with only 2 out of 20 attempts successful.
The most balanced quests are "Rats in the Basement", "Clearing the Road" and "The missing Daughter", which have exactly 50/50 success/failure rates.

The three easiest quest challenges were all in the "Finding a Thief" quest.
The most difficult challenges were one of the three Antechambers in "Labyrinth" and the magical trap in "Deathtrap Dungeon".

All of this statistical information I will use to rebalance the quests.

It's been fun. Do those of us involved in this test need to apply for the second one as well or default put in it?

It has been an interesting experience. I'd really love to see auto turns implemented though.

Apply, please, because I want to know if you want to continue or not.

Automatic turns will be implemented for the second alpha.
