time for Atamara or Dwilight to sink next hehe
The smart money would be on the "boring" islands: EC and FEI.

Maybe this is the replacement for TMP. If you island stagnates, Overlord pays you a visit.

I, for one, welcome our new Astroist overlords.

*raises a white flag*

What now, Allison?!

A strange game. The only winning move is to surrender.

Prevent nobles who just joined a ream from seeing the stats page at all, just like how we block out army information, region information, etc.

Feature Requests / Re: Honorary/Ceremonial Titles
« on: February 17, 2012, 10:58:14 PM »
It shouldn't cost the ruler prestige. Why would it need to cost anything anyway? It is just a title without any real power.

To make them scarce. Gold is a plentiful resource in this game by design. If you make the titles cost less than 100 gold, in a few months, half of the nobles in your realm would be walking around with honorary titles. And when most nobles have an honorary title, nobody does. If you make them have an absurdly high gold cost, people would just start pulling resources away from fighting wars (you know, the fun part?) to fund titles.

There should never be more than two or three honorary titles in a medium-sized realm. Otherwise you're just handing them out like candy at Halloween, not some special honor.

Actually, forget it. I'm opposing this idea, because the motivation behind this seems not to be "let's reward this awesome noble in our realm" and more about "waaah why are there only four council positions, everyone deserves to be a special snowflake".

Suggested rules:
1. Only the current Ruler can create honorary titles.
2. Creating an honorary title costs the Ruler 10 prestige and 50 gold. Revoking the title does not give you the prestige or the money back.
3. The title becomes a property of the recipient. So if the Ruler dies/pauses/leaves, the title remains. However, the title goes away if the title holder dies/pauses/leaves.
4. Honorary titles are non-transferable.
5. Only the current Ruler can revoke honorary titles (not necessarily the same noble who granted them).

How about tie-breakers where you just compare some values? In case of tie, compare prestige, if still tied, compare honor, if still tied, let the clerk flip the damn coin.

That's the point, its a lot of fun to be CE: "Speak softly, but carry a big stick."

Well, some of our PMs had more trouble with the "speak softly" part than others. That's just a cost of doing business when you're a Republic. Eventually you'll get a PM who's an excellent campaigner and a horrible statesman. If CE were a tyranny with a dictator who had years to learn his craft and build influence networks... well people would still whine about CE, but I'm sure many more complaints would be fabricated rather than legitimate.  ::)

... Is there some "bromance" going on between Kerwin and Merlin? Do I even want to know?  :o

I have lost all faith in humanity after playing this game for a few years. :)

I once had a new player's young noble write my noble a farewell letter from prison, because the player thought his noble was going to be executed. He thought this because the enemy realm's Judge threatened to execute the young noble unless he defected. Keep in mind that this was a new noble, less than a week old, and obviously had no bans. The young noble had some bad luck and got captured within a week of starting, and so the enemy realm's Judge's player decided to take advantage of the new player's ignorance of game mechanics.

A week later, the new player's noble was released, and I could finally explain to him how prisons, bans, and executions work.

Yes. I made a Titan complaint. The Judge's player received a warning.

Edit: I guess what I'm saying is, Tom, if you make an island-wide, maintenance free guild, expect it to be exploited. If you allow people to post ICly, expect players to prey on newbies from enemy realms.

It seems to me that Carelia's leadership sold a risky gamble to their realm-mates as an easy land-grab. So this was either gross negligence on their part, or they never cared about Carelia's welfare in the first place. The last King of Carelia that had its best interests at heart was probably King Bartho, if you ask me.

After signing a ceasefire treaty, Falasan started fielding troops on aggressive settings in order to help their allies again. So they had to be put down. I say "put down" because humans can read treaties and can generally be expected to follow them when their neck is on the line. It was CE's fault for mistaking the rabbits for humans.  ::)

So Carelia should be fine, at long as they don't ally with the northern realms and start showing up for battles. Probably. Suville might still decide to gank them. CE has bigger fish to fry.

BM General Discussion / Re: Cities and Duchies
« on: February 09, 2012, 12:15:20 AM »
Currently, on stable, when a realm takes a city away from another realm, we end up with a duchy spread across two realms. The city says it belongs to the duchy of X for the conquering realm, and the rest of the regions in the duchy says they belong to the duchy of X for the original realm.

I just wanted to make sure that this is due to the fact that stable does not have all the necessary code changes. Under the new system, the conquering realm would get another city added to one of its existing duchies, and the original realm would lose a city from one of its duchies?

I do not believe that's provable and thereby enforceable.

How do you prove that there has been planning out-of-game?

New estates and new duchies showed up on testing months apart, as far as I can tell. Maybe new duchies have been around and it's just not obvious until now?

Helpline / Re: Return status after a tournament
« on: February 08, 2012, 10:37:22 PM »
Just for realism's sake, I would suggest making travel to the tournament twice as fast, and then make the noble spend the same amount of time traveling back.

Yes, then the realm holding the tournament and its neighbors get a slight advantage during wartime, because their nobles return faster. That would be the point. "I hope you weren't planning on using your army this week. I just paid off a Duke to hold a tournament on the other end of the island." ;)

Thanks. Two more edge cases that I'd like to ask about:

Currently, in Tyrannies, I believe the ruler can appoint himself as Duke. Would this be still allowed in the new system? Can a noble be Dictator, Duke, and Lord of BananaRepublica City?

If you have a duchy with only rural regions... what happens when it secedes? Do you just get a realm without a capital? I'm fine with letting people screw themselves over, but new players joining a "headless" realm are probably not going to have a nice experience.

Tom, can you push the new features to stable one at a time? If you turn on everything at once, I am worried that we'll lose players on the stable islands due to sheer culture shock.

I say New Estates -> New Trade -> Region Pop Re-balance -> New Duchies.
