what happens if a duchy does not have a city/town any more? let's say a duke+lord+knight of a city in a duchy of 1 city + 1 rural gives up title of lord of city and the new lord flips to different duchy of same realm.
the duke becomes duke of 1 rural region, lord of nothing and knight of nothing?

I believe Tom mentioned that Duchies can be dissolved:

"Duchies are their own entities now, meaning the duke does not have to be the lord of the duchy capital. In fact, there is no such thing as a duchy capital. The duke does not even have to be a lord. In addition, duchies can be created and dissolved, with some limitations. " From the New Estate System page

If Rulers can create Duchies, it would (hopefully) follow that they can dissolve them as well.

Not to argue with you Tom, but did you factor in gold in the Adventurer's name in guild/temple treasuries? I don't know about other Adventurer's, but that's what I did/do to avoid paying the 1 silver "tax" per turn. It's only 'paper' gold, (i.e. guild might fold, embezelment) but may tip the scales in the Adventurers favor a little more. As an Adventurer in Giblot's Liberty Party guild, I've got about 50 gold, (at last check though... which was a while ago. Plus the whole 'Giblot losing' thing might have emptied out the treasury) but could have stocked away much more if I had been consistent at it.

Positions = More buttons.

More buttons, however, don't equal more power. The Prophet of Sangis Astrom, (however you spell it) has more power then most Rulers. Does the Prophet have more buttons? I never said "Rulers, do whatever you like because you can do it all yourself!" (I actually used the word 'Ruler' in a very general manner)

No, I said "Do what you want and no one, (context: speaking of the other, non-positioned nobles) will stop you." If your a Duke and want to get rid of a Ruler, there's ways to do that. None of them really involve button pushing. Rulers can get rid of Dukes. Again, not really from a "button mindset", but it can be done.

Hyperbole is (partly) what I intended in my earlier post. All good hyperbole has a basis in truth though.

As long as that 10% aren't dukes. Or don't have good ties with foreign powers. Improper use of force can also make one lose influence, if it makes people believe one is more bark than bite.

Who said anything about barking? Heck, that's half the problem - Rulers, (I use that word to describe anyone with power) who talk more then they do.

There is no such thing as improper use of force; there is only the failed use of force. If you want something, get it. If someone tries to stop you, then smack them. One thing I liked - and tried to encourage - was that every noble can be useful. Most of them won't be, but occasionally one will. If you can get one, you can get an army. Don't like a Duke? Find someone who might be better and give it to them. Support a new Judge - or a new Banker. If some random guy off the street and make him the Hero for the week. After all, if that random guy is the hero, then that Marshal from the other Duchy can't be.

Dukes are very powerful - why would you want a Duke to be anyone other then your most loyal and trustworthy friend? Honestly, I would see half of the realms in BattleMaster burn, (and you can throw my favorites in that half) just to see brand new positions of power open up. Reason? It gives a chance for failure and success. Be like water, my friend - flow to the weakest and either destroy them (and take their power) or help them (and gain their assistance).

As for me, it would have to be the Guy Revan incident on EI, (as already mentioned) 7K in bonds, gone completely. Hilarious... to everyone except him. I believe I heard that he RP'ed it as walking around Ibladesh City ripping up the bonds and throwing them at peasants or something.

Or I could reach wwwaaaay back to Minas Ithil's golden age and say Raziel's ICBMs. Those where the good ole days...

Vellos, I honestly thought that I would log back in and find that Paul had gotten bolted for that. If I remember correctly, I didn't log in for about... 24 hours because I didn't want to know how it turned out.

...as a study on how people react to displays of power, I only had to give out... one fine? Maybe two? We're not talking about a small Avamarian population here, nearly 80% of that realm joined Oligarch - and they TALKED constantly! And yet, one threat from the "law" and they all followed. Displays of power, no matter how they are disguised, will be followed by 90% of the population - just because.

So Rulers, if you want to shake up your realm, do it. Literally, figuratively, whatever. Just do whatever you want and no one will really stand against you. After all, rebelling is hard work.

How can Windows XP search multiple, certain folders at once?

For example, if you have a folder with 10 subfolders, is there a way to search for a file in subfolders 1, 3, 4, 7, and 10? Without having to do sperate searches in each folder.

Brief reason: my (newish) job has a ftp server and part of my responsibility is to go through the new uploads and get a certain file, open it, manually copy some of the information and then rename and resave that file on the physical hard drive.

Earlier in the week, over 3,000 new subfolders where uploaded to a folder containing at least 3,000 previous ones. I only want search to find the certain file from the "new" 3,000 folders without having the "old" files added into the results.

Could I go through each and every 3,000 folders for the one file, copy/paste? Yes, but I'm lazy and trying to look good. Any help would be appreciated! (Also, please keep in mind that this is my work computer/network I'm talking about. I can't just go download a new search tool without at least trying to make Windows work)

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be very grateful.

This thread is probably dead, but figured I'd add to it anyway. I'm a rebel!

Tops:
- Game is open ended, unbeatable and still has plenty of goals and fun
- Constant support by the Dev team, who are actually pretty damn good at what they do. They're not just volunteers, but actual honest to god experts who know what they're doing
- Following along with #2, Tom being willing to trust the Dev team/older players and step back more into the developing realm

Flops:
- After the War Islands didn't develop into the "expected outcome", war, overall, went down in quantity and quality.
- The Economy system is very important... but also full of numbers and other non-easy things to learn/play. The rewards for figuring out the system aren't in line with the effort required to learn the system. The small(er) number of players who do learn or try to learn the system eventually get fed up and abandon it, to the determent of the whole realm.
- The squeaky wheel gets the grease... except the whole Estates thing. It honestly is a good idea, but the pace of the game started to fall apart when there were more features then players to support them. Yeah, it's a cool project, but once it became clear that the player base was contracting someone should have rewound the clock by 6 months to see what BattleMaster had gone away from
