While I do agree with you, we also need to be careful about this. We need to do a better job of making sure that IC stuff stays IC, and that we need to make sure we avoid even the impression that the forum is somehow be used as a surrogate for IC action/discussion.

Forum should always be player-player interaction. We rely on mods with clear guidelines to keep it that way.

BM thrives as an ecosystem. When you gather with your friends to play a boardgame, it's not just the game itself that contributes to the mirth, but also getting to know your friends better through social interaction outside the boundaries and characters of the game. If everyone restricted their interaction to purely within the boardgame, I doubt the night would be as fun.

Yes, social interaction takes potential time and energy away from focusing on the boardgame itself, but without it people may simply choose to not come at all.

Actually, it currently appears to be able for a Duke to become a Lord in a different Duchy. The region doesn't switch Duchies if the Duke is elected, which is what I would expect to happen (There's a bug about this on the bugtracker already)

Yeah that's a bug. :)

Actually... unless Duke Kepler himself becomes the next lord, it's not possible for the new lord to have "equal or higher" position as Duke Kepler due to the way the hierarchy system works. If the next lord already holds the title of Duke or Ruler, then they are not allowed to become a lord in a different duchy.

I wouldn't mind helping Tim out with reviewing diffs and stuff occasionally. I don't have much time these days, but this sounds sufficiently fun and with better potential for returns than prior attempts at integrating new devs. :)

Should this thread or the thread on closing island be posted on the front page in the News ticker? More people should be made aware of the decisions that will be made.

Good idea, but not necessary at this time, as this poll will not be used as a numerical indicator, just to grasp a general idea of the sentiment out there. e.g. if just one person expresses a vocal opinion of AT is good, it won't mean AT will not be kept.

I think the reasons people have for which island should be kept are more important than the sheer number choosing a particular option.

The pool of players contributing to the poll is likely not a sufficient representation of the player base as a whole, but their sentiments may certainly be widely shared among their peers.

I would randomly select 1 of the 2 testing islands to keep, and randomly select 3 of the 4 stable islands to keep.

That is all.

BM General Discussion / Re: Closing Islands ?

Penchant and Ketchum mentioned that many play on Colonies because they don't have time to play on the other islands. So perhaps closing AT would result in a bigger influx to EC and FEI.

So AT=>EC+FEI, BT=>Dwilight. A very high influx of density to the core islands. If we are going to close islands, might as well do it fully and gain the most benefit possible. One big pain instead of still having to deal with this problem a few years down the road.

I feel that SMA and 1 char per island are issues tangential to the one at hand. I don't see a reason to change them, but those discussions don't influence which island to close as much.

P.S. For the record, Dwilight=>BT and EC=>FEI+AT is an equal proposition in my opinion as these are examples to think about what would happen and what the result might be like.

[EDIT: These scenarios are worth considering as possible results, the individual islands, which is closed and merged into which other one, matter less in this discussion. :) ]

Consider:

Close BT, migrate to Dwilight (the only testing island left). Close Colonies, migrate to other stable islands.

If the Zuma can be replaced, not assumed, by players, a lot of Zuma specific code can be removed. (Outer Tilog)

Result:

3 stable islands and 1 testing island left (I recommend making Dwilight immigration-only like BT so new players can concentrate on stable islands).

I'd say that the only communication the forum reduces is IG OOC rants. I think this is a very positive thing.

Honestly I think in the end it will be decided by data and generally available information rather than on personal preference of the forum's vocal crowd.

This is one of the things for which a poll will not aid the decision making process.
