Yeah.. Ouch. She looked so guilty that morning. I just had to laugh as she's a bit accident prone in real life too.

Now I'm thinking about it R'Guard Da Hadez death was a beautiful stroke of luck.

I'd been building a three-year story hidden across the rp's of three characters and numerous wiki entries, all the time evolving in line with in-game events. It was a bit like juggling cats but was going to plan.

But the end of the story pretty much required that I rp'ed R'Guard's death fighting undead at the foot of Darka's holy volcano.

The day he arrived there.. slain by an undead horde.

Perfect.

I think only one or maybe two people managed to piece together the whole story but the creation was enough fun in itself. The meat of it is still there in the Da Hadez family wiki pages if you read between the lines (and, literally, know your Norse mythology backwards).

I hate to nominate one of my own characters but Erisha Da Hadez  death in The Colonies was a doozy.

Spent a couple of years helping fighting and winning a war, annihilating the enemy realms. Key in negotiating the joint creation of a new realm from their territory with nobles from allied realms. Arrives in the new realm for the formality of being appointed ruler.. immediately slain in an accidental battle against the new realm caused by a newbie player forgetting to move from aggressive to evasive when returning home.

For extra cringeworthy irony points that player is my real-life wife.

-1 for it's impact on immersion.

In fact I would like to see all numeric unit stats replaced with adjectives.

Could be as simple as very bad, bad, average, good, very good but would prefer more descriptive descriptions..

Training: Raw, Unskilled, Competent, Skillful,  Elite,
Morale: Mutinous, Grumbling, Content, Happy,  Elated
Cohesion: Shambolic,  Disorganised, , Organised, Unified
Equipment: Derelict, Damaged, Worn, Used, Pristine
Captian: Novice, Inexperienced, Seasoned, Experienced, Veteran
CS: Weak, Average, Strong, Formiddable

Your unit page would say something like..

"The Dragon Slayers are a strong unit of competent, organised archers with derelict equipment and a seasoned captian named Boris."

CS would be replaced  with the CS adjective everywhere and the sentance description could be a mouseover on the army list, potentially a chance (per unit) of it appearing as a mouseover on on scout reports too. Region/army totals would be based on the per-man average compared to the 0-100 theoretical average.

As head-counts would still be shown and the relative strength of units it would still be possible to strategise but it would be  more vague, more immersive and more realistic.

This is Tom's game. Tom's rules.

In real life I would hate that but this is a game that I choose to play.

When people fail to adhere to the 'play as you would with friends' guidance then authoritarianism in the game is fine by me.

Feature Requests / Re: a dying message
« on: April 17, 2011, 01:10:23 AM »
+1 on this request.

I'm thinking more RP of the death than last words but, still..

Heros should get one last message after they die. Options restricted to 'Roleplay' and 'Everyone in this region'. 1000 characters max if worried about verbosity or to focus the mind of the author. One-turn time limit. Normal RP rules apply with extra guidance on the compose page if deemed necessary.

Yes, many may be crap but that's true of any message and we live with it .. but ..  there is far more incentive than any other message to make a hero's last words good, inspiring, memorable, tragic, moving or otherwise remarkable. I suspect the good:bad ratio will be higher than any other type of message.

If nothing else if someone has been working on a years-long story they should have a chance to bring it to a conclusion in-game rather than hoping someone reads their wiki page.

As for last words, unrealistic in-game, maybe (let's face it; choosing whether or not to be able to die in battle is unrealistic) but might be worth it.. some examples of what we could hope for..

"To The Stongest!" - Alexander The Great
"I'll come, I'll come. It's normal for you to call me. But wait a bit more." - Pope Alexander VI (alleged)
"I found Rome brick, I leave it marble." - Emperor Augustus
"I should never have switched from scotch to martinis." - Humphrey Bogart.
"I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." - Nathan Hale.
"I Love You." - Oliver Hardy.
"Die, my dear? Why, that's the last thing I'll do!" - Groucho Marx
"Thank God I have done my duty…Drink drink, fan fan, rub rub" - Admiral Nelson
"Get these !@#$ing nuns away from me" - Norman Douglas
"Tomorrow, I shall no longer be here." - Nostradamus.
"Strike, man, strike!"  - Sir Walter Raleigh (to his executioner).
"They couldn't hit an elephant at this dis-" - General John Sedgwick
"But the peasants, how do the peasants die?" - Leo Tolstoy
"Are you guys ready?.. let's roll." - Tom Beamer United Flight 93, September 11, 2001.
"Go away, I'm all right." - HG Wells

I start off with a few charater traits (try to get at least one unique one in there) to get a feel for their soul write a backstory on the wiki and just let them grow from there.

The wki is crystal clear on this; When concerning inalienable rights a request from a superior is equivilant to an order.

You might be alright if, during a general report on the army you mention you lack a certain kind of junit type but to say 'it would be nice if you recruited infantry' is like your boss saying 'it would be nice if you send me a progress report' .. it's just a polite order.

Australia has the top couple of venomous snakes or something. If this were an RPG, Australia would be the equivalent of the final boss' lair, unless this is one of those other RPGs where the secret final boss level occurs in the uninhabited place Antarctica, and the penguins explode. Hm, that's Disgaea isn't it....

Sir, you underestimate Australia.. what nature does not provide man invents.

That's amusing, to us the UK are backpackers, crop pickers, and when they young lasses get really desperate, top less bar girls. But come on, Australia is the only continent you guys want to lump with another country? Have the other continents get multiple categories ITS UNFAIR I TELL YOU.

Like I said.. we are each other's antipodes  :D

As for lumping countries together.. Um, 'The Americas', 'Africa', 'Europe'...it happens to the best of us.

Hmmm.. what does 'Australasia' contain? Does that cover NZ? Same continental shelf? Too late (bottle #2) too google anymore.

Australia has sharks, snakes, stingrays, spiders and basically even the wildlife without an 's' at the start of it's name wants to kill you*. NZ has Hobbits and sheep as far as I can tell from the Lord of The Rings commentaries National geographic documentaries I have seen. No contest IMHO ;D

It's human nature to generalise (and to get annoyed when people do).

Hell, even half the UK has probably declared their nationality as Scottish, English, Irish or Welsh in the 10-year census last week.

*My sister has lived in AU for 15 years.. she has never been a barmaid and the wildlife constantly tries to kill her (though she does work for vets). We both love the former colonies anyway ;)

Ohhh.. the fun a true B.O.F.H could have in a psychology department.

Or if you don't have that twisted a sense of humour at least it's a good place to brush-up your I.T. skills.

Ho. Ho. I've got hours of material like that.  :-X

Just started work as a computer programmer (again). How many days before I discover I am also the desktop support, systems administrator, and general IT man-of-all-work dude. Already had the "could you help me install Outlook" pitch and the "IMAP for GoogleMail is not working" plea.. and you just know they pronounce it 'iMap' and assume it has something to do with streetview on their phone...

Got to love it, though. At least when you get something wrong no-one glows in the dark  ;)

 ;D

I originally recruited them as militia for a small region that could only support one militia unit but ran into monsters on the way home.
I realised that as a home guard member I usually encounter enemies with no missile weapons.. often alone.. M.I. are perfect for this - pick them off then beat them up. I can take this unit up against an undead horde, obliterate them and walk away with a  few wounded men, 5% equipment damage, +5% morale and maybe +1 honour... and all for about 70 gold per week and the ridicule of my peers.

If you're not at risk of invasion (and if dictating unit types was not a horrible breach of IR) a home guard and militia comprised entirely of M.I. would be an interesting experiment.. if only they were not so unpredictable.

Sigrid's Shield
Captain Luitpold (+12)
  Type:  Mixed Infantry
  Range:  3 lines
  Strength:  34 men
  Training:  96 %
  Weapons/Armour:  87% / 64%
  Damage:   0 %
  Morale:   100 %
  Cohesion:   100 %
  Combat Strength:   704

2 Scouts, 2 Healers, 2 Banners

21cs per man, 20cs if you count the Hero char leading them but I think that bonus only counts in battle.

This bunch have been on homeland defense duties for years and can easily take out an equal force of monsters or undead without losses.
Being M.I. it can get complicated when they have help, though.

Seriously, has anyone ever made sense of M.I. actions in battle when not acting solo?

I was going suggest that the collective noun 'Antipodeans' was an acceptable designation for AU and NZ citizens (as that is how they are often described here in the UK) but  discovered the definition  and realised that to you we are the antipodeans. I learn something new every day.

The only other collective nouns we have in the UK for AU and NZ citizens is 'backpackers' or, possibly, 'barmen'.  :D

The 'Da Hadez' Family..

The first time I had to pick a username (for compuserve) Hades was already taken. Back then it was still cool (bearing in mind this was over 20 years ago and I was, like, 16) to substitute  z for s. It kind of stuck and I've used it since for usernames, domain names, game characters and so on since because it was rarely used (sadly no longer the case).

The 'Da' was supposed to be 'Da' as in 'Da Vinci' so 'Da Hadez' means 'From (badly-spelt) Hell'. I hope BM players are highbrow enough not to assume it is 'Da' as in 'Da Man' or  'Da Bomb' but either way my meaning gave me inspiration for the starting point of my family history on the wiki.

First names are designed to be easy to pronounce, spell and remember and so scan nicely with the surname.
