Dwilight / Secularism?
« on: December 18, 2011, 10:05:35 PM »
I've noticed theres been a fair amount of talk recently about fleshing out SMA a little as well as BM culture and I just thought of something simple we can outlaw: the use of the word secularism.

So how about it? Death to secularism.

I think Artemesia's point was that these inconsistencies are going to exist despite our attempts to deal with them and many of the things that are done that are non-SMA (e.g. using scout reports as infallible documents) are just done to make the game simpler.

I think you might actually be agreeing...

I really wish he had chosen something else.

The "Hossenfefferia" comment in Sanguis Astroism was pretty funny, though. :P

You should make a middle-eastern setting realm called Indirikistan.

Just because you yanks like to be anti-semitic and/or racist when it comes to politics and money, doesnt mean that the rest of the world is...

Look I'll admit I have no idea what your post was getting at, but personally I hate seeing "anti-semitic" being thrown around much more than actual racism itself. It's just so !@#$ing annoying.

BM General Discussion / Re: BM culture
« on: December 07, 2011, 08:51:58 AM »
Am I the only one who likes new BM better than old BM? I found that before positions were much more solid (they didn't budge) and this severely limited the type of person who could inhabit leadership positions; particularly to the type that just tries to satisfy everyone.

For example, I can't imagine my character Shin (who is a greedy, lying, manipulative, religious douche-bag) in the old BM, everyone would have turned on him too fast and he could never have seized power. Nowadays the politics is more fluid and characters like Shin can get a very good grip on people. In the past (and I'm talking long long ago) you'd have to keep your head down and follow orders for like a year before getting anywhere.

Obviously this isn't a black and white case where old = boring and new = exciting but I've certainly noticed that now everyone is at each others throats a lot more and I personally love it.

I understand however that some of you miss the team-oriented gameplay. My condolences.

Development / Re: Nerf the Academy

When de Legro, Indirik, Lil wolf, and myself all agree that the issue with swordfighting skills/dueling is one of culture, not mechanics, then I would go out on a limb say we have a disparate enough set of people to say we have the root of the problem.

I think it is time to change this topic to one of, "How can we influence the BM culture to get more realms/players to think this way"

I will start the ball rolling by saying, "get rid of the law about dueling - making it clear it is a matter between characters, and not something for the Judge to be involved in"

It doesn't eliminate things like the king saying "no dueling" and the Judge handing out fines, but it sets the tone for the direction the game should be going.

I agree to some extent that the culture needs to change (and I like the idea of removing the law on dueling completely and make it kind of like a sacred right) however I think it's still important to address this problem and monotonous and boring training at the academy.

Perhaps we could make the academy more expensive but only available once every three days or something and it is triple as effective as current training. Maybe through reducing the dedication required to become a great swordsman we'll see the playing field even out. Of course those who can't be !@#$ed still won't be able to get ahead.

And yeah obviously that isn't a "good" solution but I think it's important to address the current mechanics as well.

No I understand that you had double the CS and troops, and you STILL LOST without even a wall to blame it on. Stop thinking CS is the magical indication of military superiority. If anything the Loyalist proved they are simply superior fighters by defeating such a larger force don't you think?

Wait a minute. You just said that CS doesn't indicate military strength?

Awww man my head hurts....

Does the idea of becoming a fat pompous lord sound appealing to you? Say yes please  ;D

Actually I think I may have just the noble for the job.  8)

The thing is so far as I can tell Tom does accept that people are lazy. He just thinks that religions that contain lazy people shouldn't get a leg up from the game. Religions as designed are only supposed to flourish from interaction and by being so compelling they over come peoples inherent laziness. I'm not sure they achieve that as is, but making things automatic would be a step backwards in this regard.

After all if we accept people are lazy, then we accept they might not be bothered to move their units properly either, so lets just make it so marshals control everyone's movement. You could have a button that lets you "join" the army and after that everything just happens. I actually played a game like this, for all of two days. The majority of players just existed to hit that button and let the military elite actually enjoy that game, then when the army was worn down to much to fight you got to log back in, move to a recruitment zone, recruit a new unit and hit the button again.

I sort of disagree with your comparison of moving units and religion. The reason I support automation for religion is because I think religion should be the status quo. If you want a successfull religion then obviously this needs rp and dedicated members and the all the rest of the hoo-haa. The problem is that currently we have areas that just don't accept religion at all, this annoys me a lot. Instead of having a mix of no religion, dud religions and good religions; I think we need to narrow it down to dud religions and good religions.

I'd be in favour of automatic donations. Sure you can say that by the making people have to pay their own imposed "debts" but you'd be wrong. We need to accept people are lazy and try to work with that. Just putting it out there.

Helpline / Lord Appointment Requirements
« on: November 19, 2011, 01:19:15 AM »
Hi I play the Duke of Fissoa and theres some appointing going on and I really can't figure out why I'm only being offered these certain candidates. Can anyone point me to a list of the actual requirements for someone to become a lord. I'm sure I've seen them somewhere (or at least they've been discussed) but I can't find them on the forum.

The Grand Duchy. Great achievements there, as anyone who can read a map knows.

Hey don't encourage them :P
