This looks pretty interesting, however I've not played AoW before so I'd like to know: how do they mix the class/race? There are quite a few ways I can see it being done, but I'm not too sure if any of them would be easily balanced.

(Oh god, The Crown)

Damn it TR! Why do you love that place so much!?

I played the original Planetside and played most of the beta and then a few months of release for PS2, but I stopped playing since I wasn't a fan of what they'd changed from PS1.

I played in a fairly large outfit (Immortal Serial Killers) and was regularly leading 30+ people a night before I stopped playing; I think that's definitely how you can get the most fun out of the game. You don't have to be leading people, but playing in a large outfit with everyone on Teamspeak (or your choice of VOIP software) is the way to go.

I played Vanu medic, which is probably a class you'd only want to play in a team as randomers (lovingly named "the zerg") are idiots and don't stay dead for you to revive them, or still enough for you to heal them, meaning you end up pretty useless in a fight.

For just starting out I'd suggest going for Light Assault. The jetpacks make things a lot easier and since you'll be dying a lot anyway, the lack of armour isn't a massive disadvantage. I'd also suggest certing into your Empire Specific Fighter to bring down the respawn time a little and get better weapons for it because: 1) It helps you get around the map, 2) dogfights are very fun and 3) you can farm quite easily to get a decent amount of experience.

As for getting new weapons, whilst I was playing I felt it wasn't necessary. I didn't upgrade my medic weapon and never had a problem getting a decent kill:death ratio (if that's what you're into). However since I've not played in a while I'm not sure if they've changed the weapons much now so that you have to get new ones or risk being at a disadvantage.

I'm really looking forward to this game. I loved Freelancer and I'm hoping Chris and his team can build on that legacy (and that of his other games) and give us another fantastic game. Since I played Freelancer as a trader, I backed to get the trader ship (The Freelancer) which I hope to use to build up a bit of cash and then go exploring :D

Hi all!

...some rather basic questions:

1) Is there a way to /lower/ society levels? By now I try to have mindcontrol by level 75-77 to avoid having to import food.
2) Is there any downside to having high taxes?
3) How do I interpret the attack and defense numbers of different ship classes. For example, a super battleship has att 27, def 14, costs 8000 steel and 75000 q. A battleship has att 20, def 9, costs 4000 steel and 25000 q. If I compare these numbers directly I get more att by building 2 BS instead of one SBS....so I assume the numbers are not compared directly. I assume that damage is (att-def) making the fight between 2 BS and 1 SBS more...uhm...logical.
4) Based on answers to 3, is it better to build as many SBS as possible, building smaller classes only where larger classes are not availiable? Or any other suggestions?
5) Is it possible to combine fleets? Or add ships to existing fleets?
6) (edit) I assume that trading actually generates additional money (= it does /not/ simply move q's that are generated by taxes between planets).. Is that correct?
7) (edit) does sending more than 1 arc (in the initial fleet) to a new planet result in faster development of that planet?
8) (edit) does sending an arc to one of your own (already settled) planets raise the population (and steel stockpile) there?
9) (edit) Is there any way to send ressources (and to chose which res to send) to other planets (other than via trading)?

Thanks for your help!

Since I haven't played since the reboot, these answers may be off, but:

1) Yes, someone attacking you will lower the level.
2) Yes, you get less resources when you have higher taxes.
3) This is not a question :P But in answer to your musings, ships don't all fight at once. So if I have 100 BS and go against 5 SBS, only a handful of my ships will fight (I don't think we worked out how many, my guess is 1.5*[enemy ship number]). Also, you use your "worst" ships first, so 100 Cruisers and 100 BS in the same fleet, you'll use up your Cruisers first.
4) This all depends on the situation. I think for attacking planets, you want large fleets to break in then smaller fleets to do the damage.
5) I think this is on the "to do" list.
6) I think this changed in the newer version, but in the previous version, if you were trading inside your empire it just moved stuff around and gained you some extra Q because trade ships cost negative upkeep (so they give you money for having them).
7) Kinda, you get more starting people so you can get more resources there, quicker.
8 ) Yes.
9) If you have planetary links (the lines between two planets) then kinda, since you'll use up resources on both planets. If you don't, then I think there's something on the "to do" list about this too.

I beat the boss last night on easy with the Engi ship. But I got MASSIVELY lucky. After 2/3 jumps into the game, I got an augment that boosted any scrap I got by 15% (can't remember the exact %). I also seemed to get exactly what I needed, when I needed it: 2 fuel left, found a guy trading fuel for missiles; trouble destroying ships, find 2 weapons in as many jumps; not perfect upgrades before final boss, kill someone and get over 150 scrap for it.

On attacking the boss I had a full crew (2 Engi, 2 Human, 1 Rockman, 1 Manta, 1 Zoltan), starting ion weapon, 3 shot blaster (Kestrel's starting weapon), a single shot blaster (with enough power for all 3), 2 attack drones Mk1 and 1 defence drone Mk1 (enough power for 2). No cloak/teleport.

---Possible spoilers for those who haven't faced the boss yet---

Against the weapons only, I just made sure I paused after each volley he shot, moved people around and aimed for his shields with everything. I probably should have switched my 1-shot blaster to taking his weapons out.

Against drones I took his shields first, then kept shooting my Ion at them to keep them down. Used other two weapons on the drone control - constant fire on this meant that he was taking crew damage too, so couldn't keep everyone in there at the same time to repair it.

Against the teleport, I got lucky. 1st group teleported into the air-lock area, so I opened that which helped when they reached my crew. Then the 2nd two went against my Manta/Rockman. 3rd two were difficult (mainly because of other damage) and almost destroyed my ship, but I survived with 3 hp left. Multiple hull breaches, fires in most rooms, everyone on low health (except the pilot who was oddly un-harmed).

---End possible spoilers---

My tip would be to make extensive use of pausing the game to take stock of what's going on and move crew around to where they're most needed. Also, have a mix of quick/long reload weapons. I didn't need missiles/bombs but it would no doubt have been much easier with a fire-bomb.

Now to try it on normal!

I've not looked at this since version 0.8.5 - much changed since then? There were only a handful of parts (I think one of each thing) and I could barely get off the ground without spinning and crashing straight back into the ground. Seemed ok, but can't say I saw much promise in it.

I completely agree with the above, this is a brilliant idea.

So, the galaxy has been reset. Who's playing again and where are you? :)

I'll wait and be a bit sheepish on this. If quite a few of you start playing again and say it's better than before, I might join you.

I too cannot pick a single book, however a selection series I thoroughly loved reading:

The Dreamers, by David & Leigh Eddings
Dune, by Frank Herbert (and to a lesser extend, the sequels/prequels by his son)
Discworld, by Terry Pratchett (mainly stories about The Watch)

Anyone still playing?

Anyone not currently playing thinking about rejoining once everything is reset?

I have fond memories of how General Herumor(?) led an army across the continent to sack the city of Suville around that time, emphasising Darkan ability, slating everything about Abington and advertising Darka's services as mercenaries to the General's channel all the while. Couldn't really fault all the pompous bombast either. He delivered everything he said he would :-P

Yup. I think this was part of the same attack (maybe a follow up attack?). One lot of us went to Wayburg and the others went to Suville. It was so long ago I've forgotten the exact details of it, all I remember is that we really upset some people :P

But yeah, with the AH I suppose it was unlikely Blizzard would make crafting too useful in the late game.

Indeed, especially since once the real money AH goes live they'll be getting a cut of all the sales.

Still, it would be nice if in a patch they added at least a couple of mindblowing smithing recipes to loot drops.

Not happening unfortunately. They've said they'll fix bugs, do some very minor balancing and then add in PvP. There won't be any extra content after that until they release the expansion :(

The second to last war Abington was in, where Carelia was fairly quickly forced out, RedSpan was destroyed, and Abington barely managed to not lose more than the islands against most of the rest of Atamara.

This. I was part of Darka at the time and remember leading a small army down to sack Wayburg, before returning and meeting up with the rest of the army to attack RedSpan - damn goat lovers.

Died at level 43, just over 30 hours of play time. Got stuck in a tight corridor with a Desecrator / Arcane Enchanted champion. Ran off to get to open space, but got caught by the beams as I did. Looks like my dream of a level 60 Hardcore character is now a long way off :P

But that doesn't make AH prices any less silly, alas. It would be nice if you could turn to the gem/blacksmiths as an alternative but that's a no go.

Yeah, I turned to bargain hunting on the AH quite often to get decent gear and gems. The problem is that they've balanced things for the end game (which is fair enough). Crafting things then is rather cheap as you've got so much gold. But early/mid game, things are ridiculously expensive.
