BM General Discussion / Re: Considering Return - State of the Game
« on: September 15, 2015, 01:31:20 PM »
Welcome back! Well, almost, at least.

As said, player density hasn't increased. Some continents were partly covered with ice (or, like, the entire western part of Dwilight is now rogue and practically impassable), but those of us who stick around keep things going.

I'm not privy to Atamara as I have avoided that continent in a long time. The things I hear are indeed about perpetual peace, although I do recall that there was some war up in the northeast. That might be over now, though.

East Continent has some war going. Primarily in the southern half, as all realms there are at war except for Perleone. Sirion is battling some broken off duchy, which they have driven towards Oligarch city, but as I understand it Sirion is being royally slow at finishing that war. Or perhaps Duchies of Souther Sirion (the brakeaway realm) is skilled at one-city survival!

Beluaterra's war has dimmed. Thalmarkin, Ar Agyr and Old Grehk are still fighting Nothoi (and possibly one of their allies if they show up). I'm inclined to believe the tipping point in that war has already been passed, though. I would still say you should go to Beluaterra, but that's mostly because I am biased in favor of Beluaterra at any given time.

Dwilight saw a long war in which Luria Nova fought against everyone except Swordfell, however that war has also tipped over in favor of Luria Nova. Fissoa has been split into two realms. Morek was chopped up in a hilarious fashion from the inside. D'Hara, Swordfell and Luria Nova now retain their "pre-glacier" borders more or less. Astrum is still a powerhouse, but has somewhat relocated to where Corsanctum used to be. The war is not over, but it might be more interesting to join one of the Morekian offspring if you don't fancy travelling long distances to fight one or two battles.

The South Island is also known as the War Island. It's fun, it's active, it has plenty of battles. If you decide to join the game again, you surely need to play on the War Island as well.

As an expected follow-up, today Europa Universalis IV comes at 7.99 (-80%). All the DLC except the one released last week is at least at -50% too, for those who already have the base game but wish to obtain the DLC.

General Talk / Re: How old are you?

I was 13 when I started playing. :)

Almost 25 now. Oh and from Belgium.

Me too (except I am already 25 since April). Good thing I forced Lorgan to play this game. I remembered the ironic laughing, at first, but now I am the one who has the last laugh!

Other Games / Crusader Kings II Steam Summer Sale
« on: June 16, 2015, 12:06:03 PM »
Hey,

As I did previously for EUIV, I'll now report to you that Crusader Kings II is on sale during the Steam Summer Sales. €7.99 is the current base price, but I think that for about ~€35 you can acquire the complete collection.

Anyway, this game is like BattleMaster, as you play as a character and have to steer your family through wars and inheritance all at the same time. Not to mention the game gets exceptional reviews allover the place. Oh, and it has a superb "Game of Thrones" mod, which allows you to "experience" the Game of Thrones in the game, as it is perfectly built for just that (intrigue, stabbings, incest, wars, ...).

Should you wish to get more than the basic game, all the DLCs are also (individually) for sale, with a hefty reduction. Depending on what you like, you should look for the slightly more expensive DLCs (about €3 atm, reduction included) as they allow the scope of the game to expand (new starting dates, playing with non-catholic characters, vikings, Indian nations, ...).

With Morek's demise the North looks a lot more interesting. As a Lurian I enjoy the dismantling of the League in such a chaotic matter, too.

Awesome death for one of the most colorful characters ever.

This. To die when we finally succeed in winning the battle of Taselak city... that's food for legends. I have enjoyed Kurlock as a character ever since I was in Sandalak. The way you played it Zakky, makes it an example to us all. I'm not ashamed to say I am modelling my characters more on Kurlock's commitment to the realm. Thank you.

Feature Requests / Re: Feature Request: Public Wealth List
« on: June 02, 2015, 07:13:44 PM »
You make the treshold low enough to ensure that the average duke or rich city lord comes up in the list from time to time, but you also enable people who are really hoarding gold to be public knowledge.

The assumption also runs that this would be a realm-limited list. That was not my intention. My intention for this suggestions was to have it be continent-wide, i.e. everyone will know King-Duke-Margrave Bazillion is ridiculously rich.

Why would this even be bad? If people are playing Battlemaster to hoard the most gold on a character, well, they are playing the wrong game. Perhaps opening the knowledge of their wealth to others will allow them to find more uses for their gold.

I had considered that this would have OOC-repercussions, and I'm not even sure that is bad. My intention is to root out the rot from the inside. People hoarding ridiculous amounts of gold ingame who then do nothing with it at all, I call them the rot.

There are some really good characters providing great fun on the South Island. I like meeting with Taselak, they have the best trash talk.

Feature Requests / Feature Request: Public Wealth List
« on: May 21, 2015, 08:39:58 PM »
Title: Public Wealth List

Summary: There should be a publicly available list of characters who hold "excessive" wealth.

Introduction: After looking at the statistics page, more specificly the continent-comparison stats that give pie charts, I noticed Atamara held more than 1.1 million (this is not a typo) gold. When I asked if this was the wealth between the characters, the answer was "yes". Even more info got out. Apparently the wealth is concentrated in some characters (e.g. one EC char has almost 100k gold, 6 atamaran nobles hold 500k gold between them, ...). Now, while hoarding gold is a very noble thing, I believe this situation needs at least some form of addressing. It might be useful if this were public knowledge. For example, if a character holds 100 thousand gold, be it cash or in bonds, I am sure that would be known amongst nobility. I'm going to estimate that the average noble holds, at best, 500 gold (I might be oddly off, though).

Details:

Tim suggested something good on IRC (and, well, it's Tim); "As long as you are one of the top X nobles on the continent as far as gold + bonds combined, *and* you are over (say) 10k, some approximation of your wealth is known, rounded down to the nearest 5k or 25k, depending on how much you have."

I think this is a good suggestion. It will ensure the exact amount of wealth a character has is not known, but an approximation will give others an idea at the very least. It could be added to the "Information" tab in the game, thus ensuring all players have access to it.

Benefits: Accountability of rich characters. Various ways for your characters to use this information to scheme, plot and seek out alliances. Fair information for a possible adversary.

Disadvantages: putting certain players under unwanted pressure.

East Island / Re: Lions vs Tiramorans: the petty war of the South!
« on: May 21, 2015, 07:51:45 PM »
Vix Tiramora now holds Dimwood, Perdan still holds Woolton. The war goals have been exchanged, but in reality, this turns this war into a draw. Ar Mosul was at like 99% taken over by Perdan but Vix charged in and won the battle. Another bloody battle, I love them. Anyway, everything's forcefully wedged open in this war... which is good news! It means even more battles!

There was some minor Tiramoran looting in Woolton, by the way, but it was assured to Perdan that this was not ordered and thus not sanctioned. We'll see where this goes. Perhaps looting should gradually be introduced?  8)

This being the war island, Taselak is doing the right amount of (cleverly written) insulting. Our lack of conflict with Ikalak prevents us from experiencing their insults. A shame!

BM General Discussion / Re: Crazy Merger Idea

The paid subscription for M&F would probably cause me to stop playing (even though I donated to BM and enjoy goodies). I'd much prefer a donation system rather than making it pay-to-play. It is, after all, a browser game.

In addition I'm in the "if this and that changes, perhaps I might be interested". I'm very attached to the way BM works, looks, etc. though. I have tried M&F twice, but neither times did it appeal to me. It either felt too empty or there was too much lack of social contact, which is all BM revolves around really. That being said, I don't know enough about M&F to know which features are compatible or lacking between BM and M&F, so I'm in no real position to judge. Some aspects are things I like (e.g. rulers have limited, relative power compared to their vassals) and have wanted to see in BM for a long time. I understand BM is no longer in development and Tom has moved on to M&F, which is kinda sad, but it's his full right to do as he pleases - and we might consider ourselves happy he hasn't simply pulled the plug on BM (I will scour all of Germany to find you!).

Ah, you finaly managed to name it, then.  ;) I'll agree I may not take into account the efforts of others, but may I suggest making things less complicated and just going for it?
