SM General Discussion / Core
« on: August 25, 2011, 02:01:55 AM »
Is SM3 going to be linked to the Core? If so, will creating an account for SM3 now cause problems with core linkage later?

SM General Discussion / I'm interested, but...
« on: August 06, 2011, 01:16:19 AM »
...I've never played a "play by email" game before. Can someone give me a quick run-down of how it all works?

Who do my emails go to?
How do I keep up-to-date with what everyone else is doing?
Won't I be getting tonnes of emails if there are a lot of players?
Will I get completely out of the loop if I go on holiday for X days?

Feature Requests / Guards for caravans
« on: July 30, 2011, 11:33:09 PM »
Plenty of times I've sent food to regions via caravan to be sold and it's come under attack by monsters, losing a bit of income for the region. Could we have the option to send guards along with the caravan to defend it from monsters? Maybe not protecting it entirely, but reducing some of the loss.

Colonies / What's Minas Thalion like?
« on: July 14, 2011, 05:08:00 PM »
I've been thinking about moving my character from Giblot to somewhere new. Being at war with everyone else in the Colonies means I don't really have a choice where I move to, so I was wondering: what it's like in the newest realm on the island? Does it have much of the old Alebad spirit? Or is it plodding along at its own pace? Do many people speak there?

Other Games / AI War
« on: July 10, 2011, 12:48:32 AM »
I picked this up a few of days ago in the Steam sale (£3 for the game and 3 expansions!) and I love it. I was wondering if anyone else plays it.

The game is a space RTS with a heavy focus on the strategy. The objective is to defeat your two AI opponents' home planets. Their fleet outclasses yours and they usually have more ships than you too. As the game goes on and you destroy more of the AI, they get stronger and launch larger attacks on your planets.

There's loads of customization options that cater for most types of RTS player (I'm not sure how much is available without expansions as I bought everything at once) and average games last about 12 hours (I've been playing shorter games whilst I get used to it, so they've been about 6 hours). It plays a bit like Sins of a Solar Empire, but I've found there's a lot more room for strategy in the late game instead of just bashing your opponent with big fleets and hoping you win.

BM General Discussion / How to decide on giving medals
« on: July 04, 2011, 12:45:20 AM »
I've been able to give medals out for a while now, but I've never actually given one out (I know, shame on me). Whenever I think "well maybe they deserve a medal", another part of me says "but this is the first time they've made me smile/ etc". So I was wondering how people decide to give out medals: do you do it based on one/two things that someone does? Or do you look at how someone plays in the long-term?

Helpline / Adventurer bounty payments
« on: July 01, 2011, 02:06:24 PM »
I was wondering how the bounty system works. Does it pay out based on how much is currently in the pot? Or how many monsters/undead the adventurer kills?

So for example, if there was 20 gold in the pot and an adventurer killed 1 monster. Would they get the same amount paid to them as when there was only 10 gold in the pot?

General Talk / Game mechanic ideas
« on: June 08, 2011, 02:03:36 AM »
I'm currently making a game. Mostly as a CV filler but also to see if I can actually make a complete one on my own. My university course has taught me how to implement various parts of games, but I've never made a full one myself.

The game is currently only in ascii (when I started it, I couldn't be bothered to make my own renderer, may possibly port it over at some point between now and completion) and has random placement of rooms & corridors - basically, it's in its the very early stages of development.

I wanted the game to be a simple dungeon crawler: choose a starting character, allocate stat points that increase/decrease the changes of things happening (e.g. changing critical hit/miss chance), collect various items to help you on your way, see what level floor you can reach. Possibly making it party based and it may have some loose story mode to it (unsure on both of these yet).

I also wanted a unique/under-used game mechanic to implement, but I'm not sure what. If anyone could help me out with ideas, I'd really appreciate it. I'm willing to have a bash at implementing any mechanic, so feel free to suggest any and all ideas you have.

Helpline / 'Dying' status
« on: June 02, 2011, 01:09:59 PM »
Does being 'dying' mean that my character will eventually die? The text that I read when I play that character makes it sound like there's still hope, but how much hope is there? And how long will it be before my character finally goes to the great beyond?

BM General Discussion / Letters as roleplays
« on: June 02, 2011, 12:45:56 AM »
When I've got little time, I'll often skip the roleplay messages and just read the other types of messages. But recently I've seen quite a few people tag things as "roleplay" when actually it's a letter to someone. I only noticed because one of those roleplays was addressed to my character as I was skipping past it. I went back through my messages and noticed I've actually skipped a lot of letters.

What do you all think about tagging what are obviously letters as being roleplays? How do you respond to them? Part of me says they should be ignored as the player might have meant them to be roleplays and not letters, but then the other part of me says I might be stopping things progressing because I'm ignoring things.

Helpline / Leaving a region
« on: May 22, 2011, 12:43:59 PM »
My character just got forced into battle twice when leaving a region. She gets 6 hours a day and it was going to take about 24 hours to leave the region. She just got put in prison for assaulting the region against overwhelming odds, so for next time I was wondering: what's the best way to leave a region with high travel times and a low amount of hours left?

Helpline / Making Titan decisions public
« on: May 11, 2011, 09:56:57 AM »
I recently sent an SMA complaint to the Titans and it was answered in my favour. Now another person is doing exactly the same behaviour. I was wondering how to handle it: do I ask the person to kindly stop and hope they do it, if not, send another SMA complaint? Or do I mention it to them that the Titans have already ruled on a similar case and that their behaviour should not be on an SMA island? Or perhaps some other approach?
