wait what? you can summit spells now? I thought we haven't launched the game yet.

We haven't, but we need to get some of the initial Spell base set in place which is why we are asking for submissions now, none of which are you guaranteed to have when the game does actually start.

BS.

No it's not.

As I said, it's who knows how to use them best, and by that I do not mean the effects, as you say, they are fixed for each spell. I mean by which spell to use when. Someone with vast amounts of spells might get carried away and cast spells that make them tired very quickly meaning the other person, with just a dozen or so spells, could take advantage of the situation.

The one who has the most spells may well have a huge advantage but only if they know how/when to use them properly. Someone with a vast quantity of spells who does not know how to use them best will probably find having so many options a hindrance rather than a help.

Quote
I think the problem here isn't just that someone who comes along later will have fewer spells because it's a younger character.  The problem is that the people here right now have the chance to research lots of basic spells, spells that are simple and obvious, but that haven't been laid out by the GMs from the start.  They get to make them up, and then their characters know them.

The spells being done now, before the game starts properly are, as far as I'm aware, going to be kept in the game but the characters will not necessarily keep knowledge of each one once we go active.

Quote
When people come along later, they will not be able to research these basic spells, because once one person has created Fireball, no one else can ever learn a Fireball spell except from them! (or, obviously, in a chain leading back to them)

As has been stated elsewhere, if/when Councils are up and running, if they take similar form to the past the keep their own grimoires which are made available to all members of the Council (possibly split at different levels). So a new player,  if they joined a Council, would have most of the basic spells made available to them through that.

This isn't a game about people spending most of their time away from other SpellCasters, there should be lots of interactions and opportunities for trade/teaching/learning.

If there do seem to be problems once we're underway, we can look at addressing things, but the basic spells should be relatively easy for people to get hold of once we've been going a while.

Who has the most spells is not what would decide who does best, it's who knows how to use their spells to the best effect that will always come out on top...

Also, it is right that the people who have been around longer will be the stronger ones, but then it's down to those new to magic to put in the effort to learn things for themselves, or find someone to teach them...

Magistrates Case Archive / Re: Threats of reprimand due to playing speed

Just as a pointer on this... James Marshall (that would be me) actually has the character that is the judge in the realm of the character this complaint is about, so is fully aware that he would never have been fined for this, and nor would any of the other players.

As a player who has been here for a very very very long time though, I am aware of my rights and know what I can and cannot be ordered to do (or to not do). Newer players however may not be aware of this, and that is why there is the problem as, as others have stated, they may change their playing style (or leave the game) because they think they will be in trouble if they don't. That is where the problem is and why IRs should be kept as far away from as possible.

Maps should be coming.

As for people hiding away on their own, if they want to do that it can become a bit dull and could well mean their progress is slow. However, other players (as long as the storyline has not become locked) would be able to join them, and of course the GMs can get involved.

If you really want to enjoy the game, interaction with others, so you have different people building the story together, is definitely the best. You might have an outline of a story you want to take your character through, then someone else does something which takes it in a completely different direction.

The original incarnation was done via emails and email distribution lists, later on it moved to forum based, and I would expect the latest version to stick with the forum basis.

 ;D
!!!!!!!!!!!

That says all that needs to be said from me I think :) (though of course I will say more)

Can we have a certamen engine again, I think having something like that up and running would certainly add to the appeal. Happy to help out in whatever way I can with this. SM is still my favourite game ever and I've always been hoping for its return!

A call for volunteers... I'm always there to answer a call like that for BM if it's needed :)

I've been playing BattleMaster since a short while before it started and have gained a few trust medals in that time. (This is my second account as I had a six month absence before the pause system had been created :( )

I am well known in real life for always being able to understand both (or all) sides of an argument and to be a good mediator.

I can continue but I get bored talking about me too much :)

...and in regard to Outer Tilog...

I've never seen it as an Evil realm, just a place that has a different view on the world and a different way of doing things. It has periods of 'stupid' 'evil' behaviour, but also has occasions where the dark ways (and different thinking) are put into fantastic RPs. (It's quieter than it used to be, but we have a lot of long time players who, as life has gone on, just don't have the time they used to - so the great stuff isn't there as often, but it is still there - and some of the newer blood that's been turning up has brought some fresh life there as well (which helps encourage us oldies to put in some effort again!))

Strange nobody mentioned the Elves of Sirion on East Continent.

Those are the only "magical" or out of this world beings on the whole BM that Tom approves.

Usually they are categorized as "Tree Lovers" or "Tree Huggers" (I love the second one) even thou I'm part of Sirion I play descendants of Oligarch (supposedly half orcs and orcs), just love the dilemma of helping those who are by nature my race enemies.

Who remembers something about Oligarch? they where orcs right?

(yes, more old stuff!)

There was a phase when a number of realms on the East Continent started considering the fantasy route. The only things that were ever official (if I recall correctly) was that Sirion had Elves and the Mines of Isadril were mined by Dwarves.

I remember Itorunt having a discussion about starting to RP as Dark Elves but fortunately they were talked out of this before it got started and shortly after that the decision to stop any fantasy races being in BM was taken. Some in Sirion may still claim to be Elves, but they will only be seen as a different sort of human to any of my characters (as Elves don't exist!)

This was in relation to the place with the 'Eastern' type way.

I heard it was the Far East Island.  From what I understand, it didn't last long.

(yes, yes, I'm replying to stuff from ages ago... I don't visit here often...)

It was the Far East and it was in all the RP work done for the weeks (months?) before the Island went active for characters to actually be able to do anything. The Island (in the original RPs) was two large realms, one of which was Eastern oriented. Once it all went live though, it didn't last that much longer as the ideal of being an RP island didn't last too long unfortunately.

Yes, Outer Tilog is different.

However, everything we do is fun based, and involves interaction. Not just turning up in the realm, saying nothing to anyone, and *within 5 minutes of arriving in the realm* going and stabbing an ally.

It screams out OOC behaviour and is certainly not the way I would expect to play with friends. All it would have taken would have been a short RP beforehand to give it some flavour and I would not have any issue with it. that didn't happen and it just comes across as a bit pathetic...

We just had exactly the same thing occur within Outer Tilog... Noble arrives, and 5 real minutes later, without a word to the realm, he attacks an ally in our capital.

As was said before, really tacky and pointless, even for Outer Tilog standards.

Being a major factor in the ousting of (at least) 4 rulers of a realm with very few people being aware of my involvement. There was a lot of effort in a couple of them. This was spread out over a number of real years... Fun fun fun :)

Oh, and not letting the adventurer class be forgotten about and getting it implemented...

...and a few other things as well that cannot be talked about for years yet as they're still ongoing :P
