Development / Re: Modifying TMP Training Reductions
« on: September 02, 2011, 05:29:26 PM »
If your realm can't survive a few battles, should it exist in a game called battlemaster?
So, I take it we should get rid of everything in the game that doesn't directly involve fighting battles?

There's a lot more to BattleMaster than just fighting.

. . . a lot of it is scheming to keep the peace until you're in a position where you, and not the other guy, will win the fighting.

I tend to agree.  Are there cases where TMP is causing problems where it probably shouldn't?  Sure.  Is there more fighting on every continent because of it?  Hell yes.
Can you provide good and strong evidence to back that claim up?  Because that has not been my experience.  I know that Zonasa's ruling council has never really considered TMP (though we haven't been hit by it much -- some but not a lot), and the only way TMP is factoring into my calculations of going to war as ruler of Libero Empire is 'has TMP made us too weak to be able to go to war, and will we ever be able to go to war again because of it?' -- I'm looking for a war as a way to provide something interesting to the PLAYERS, because most of them are losing interest, and the only thing TMP is doing for us is destroying our military before we can even get in position to go to war.

Depends.  Are you arranging it OOC, player to player?  Or are you arranging it IC "We must keep the peasants in check!  We have always been at war with Oceania!" with the possibility that something will go wrong IC and the war will spiral?
I've actually been thinking about arranging something like that IC, though my plan is to propose it to the other ruler more as a sort of grand tournament.  But first I need a way to make sure that if it spirals out of control, my realm won't get screwed.

But yeah, right now TMP is not working very well, mainly for the reasons Phellan stated, also because it happens too fast -- during Zonasa's war with Arcaea, we got hit by the penalties at least once while we were refitting, and several times just barely avoided the time cutoff for penalties -- if it hits realms that are actively fighting wars, something is wrong.

Feature Requests / Re: Battle Simulator

I like the idea of mock battles -- include a chance that your troops will die, though, they may be using blunted weapons, but accidents still happen.  From my understanding, having large scale mock battles is historically accurate -- I'm not an expert, so people who are should correct me, but Wikipedia seemed to suggest that this was originally the main feature of tournaments, and that BM style tournaments are a very late medieval evolution of these large scale melees.

Development / Re: Caravans Broken (dwilight)?
« on: August 28, 2011, 07:29:03 PM »
I too sent out a caravan a few days ago and it hasn't moved yet.

Also, you're really selling food for 1 gold? Either your region has a ridiculous gold income, or someone is taking advantage of you ;)
Selling for 1 gold can be useful if you're not sure what the buy order is set to and want to make sure it sells to any open order -- if the buy order is higher than your limit, it will sell at the price of the buy order (though I think if there are multiple buy orders for different prices, it will choose the lowest one that is equal to or higher than the limit).

But yeah, also having problems with my caravans on Dwi.  Specifically, I set it to automatically send caravans out if I have more than a set amount of food, and it is not doing that.  Will try some other stuff.

Far East Island / Re: Church of Echad

Given that you're trying to start a faith right in the middle of the largest and strongest faith on the island. . lets vote piss people off ;)

Lucky that the Order can't just shut you down, but Zonasa's laws make it pretty clear I can't do anything to you :P  *grumbles*

Oh well, not like we're that active roleplay wise.   We just have that critical mass of peasantry.  lol.

Eh, I'm sure there's politics and intrigue stuff you can do.  And you should probably shore up support with key members (like your biggest donor).

The lack of RP in the Order does hurt them, though -- that's why one of my characters (David) is leaving.  Morgan has a lot invested in the Order, but who knows what the future will bring. . . .

Well, I'm about to join and become a priest, so that might help with that . . . I think it's most effective to preach in 12 hour increments, but I could be wrong.

Hmm, Ciann reforming Zonasa's military might be interesting . . . there are certainly people that might at least be willing to listen.

You've got two legitimate IC reasons right there... why would you need to call the players jerks?
I don't know about the players, but some of the characters are jerks.  We've just been too busy up til now to take care of them.

As marshal of Arcaea's largest army, Velax found Zonasa to be quite a decent opponent, at least when compared to how you were before. But many, in game and on these forums, believe Zonasa's army was badly led and disorganised. What's your opinion on this?
Our general is not brillent and sometimes overcautious, but certainly provides decent leadership.  It could be better organized, and there have been increasing coordination problems.  It comes and goes, though, and is not quite as bad as some make out -- but for no reason I can point to, we are less organized than we were two months ago.  Probably in another two months we'll be doing great.

To expand on the stories to be told in Zonasa:
Batesoar is 'sort of' a pirate city (I'm speaking as the duke of the city here).  This has not been a major RP in Zonasa, but there was something related to pirates with it before, so I've kept it in the back of my mind.  However, anyone using 1600s/1700s pirates as a guide for this will be mercilessly mocked by me.  The way I imagine it tends towards seafaring merchants who are, shall we say, not always honest . . . and if they see another ship all alone when they're out trading, and think they can overpower it, well . . . so not out and out pirates per say, but certainly not so ethical opportunists.
There's a least one other religion in Zonasa, and the new church of Echad is growing reasonably fast . . . so religious conflict could certainly be coming.  Zonasa has avoided it thus far by officially tolerating all religions that aren't trying to kill people, but . . . given that a lot of people support the Order, and the attitude of some of the Echad people, things might happen soon.

Development / Re: Retention Revisited
« on: June 22, 2011, 12:08:03 AM »
Yes...The fact that there's no way to tax cities right now is one of the many, many, many reasons why Dukes are overpowered at the moment.  I still think the easiest way to get around that short of revamping the tax system (which would still be my preference) would be to just auto-shunt all city income to the duchy tax pool.
Problem with that is that then the knights of the city have no income.  Well, I guess the Duke could manually give them bonds, but. . . .

Of course, being both the Duke of the richest city in the realm and the banker, I don't mind this idea otherwise. . . .

Far East Island / Re: Dude, where's my C'thonia?
« on: June 21, 2011, 11:29:22 PM »
At this point C'thonia needs more nobles - we can't hold the regions we do have without police work.   Which means we can't go join the war.   We have the funds and the desire to do so - but it would mean giving up regions that we need to feed Azros and Hadthes.

If we had a few more nobles, it wouldn't be an issue I don't think, but right now it's more the lack of estates that's hampering war than anything else.
Sadly in the same situation on Dwilight -- it's not a fun one to be in, and hard to get out of.  Honestly, I think the solution is giving up regions, but few realms are willing to do that -- and I'd guess even suggesting that to Thain would get you accused of treason.

but that raiding attack of ours on PoZ was never supposed to cost them land, otherwise we would have stopped in a region to assist C'Thonia TO's.
In fact, didn't Jenred pull out early so that we could fight C'thonia?

Yes, Cathay do seem to like doing that, don't they.
Honesty I don't know why anyone actually listens to them, Morgan has been advocating forcibly shutting them up for a bit now.  Though things may change with their new ruler -- I was disappointed when he sided with Arcaea, of course, but he seems to be changing his tune a bit now.  And they did get rid of Xarnelf, so I suppose that may actually end up helping the war effort.

Far East Island / Re: Dude, where's my C'thonia?

They're kinda stuck.  They can't hold their land without attention, but they threw in their lot with Arcaea in the invasion of Zonasa, so they are now surrounded by nations who would love to absorb them with a decent cassus belli, but they don't dare declare away from Arcaea either.
It's not Arcaea that's keeping them alive at the moment, rather the fact that idiots in Kindara and Cathay decided to rescue C'thonia last time they attacked Zonasa (which didn't really have much to do with siding with Arcaea, they just like attacking us.  And losing badly), and tell Zonasa that we were not allowed to eliminate the threat to our security.  Grr.  So, for some reason (honestly, I'm pretty sure Zonasa could take on all three realms) we decided to agree to a treaty that prevents us from entering their lands unless they enter ours first.  On the plus side, if they do attack us, all the realms that border Zonasa are obligated to help us destroy C'thonia totally.

Hmm, I wonder if I can engineer a false flag operation to get this to happen. . . .
