Questions & Answers / Re: Graphic RP Feedback Thread
« on: April 23, 2020, 11:18:51 PM »
My son's been desperate to play BM for a couple of years now but there've been some really dark RPs in that time so I've been reluctant to let him join. Whilst I'm opposed to censorship and at times explore adult themes in some of my own RPs I think this will be a good compromise.

I also believe that the excess spawning of rogues was also set into place to encourage this same density and interaction.
From what I have seen, the excess spawning of monsters has had the opposite effect.  It has broken apart realms into smaller areas leaving little chance for interaction between realms.  One can not leave their realm undefended so that they can travel through many rogue occupied regions with their entire army to either assist their allies or to wage war on their enemies.  The goals of the devs may be laudable, but the path they follow to obtain those goals is, in my opinion, questionable.

It's certainly had that effect on Ar Agyr. We went from being a realm which regularly engaged across the continent and was developing an active maritime culture to one that's now hobbled to the regions bordering our capital because of the constant onslaught of rogues. We have 11 nobles, 8 adventurers, 4 regions, and a major monster migration route right in the heart of them.

I'm thankful that the majority of our players have stuck with the realm under these conditions because it's not clear to me this situation is fun for anyone (I'm notoriously stubborn about keeping realms alive but even I don't enjoy fighting the same battles every turn with only an occasional sense of progress).

What's missing now is battle reports of melee and ranged SF, accompanied with the stats of those SF...

You can find some of those in the older Dubhaine wiki pages but I stopped recording battle reports around April 2013 as I was ultra busy IRL. It wasn't long after that that I cut down to only playing Cathal on the Colonies and essentially played for 2 years exclusively fielding Special Forces. You may find some Colonial players - especially from OT - who have battle reports you can correlate with Cathal's unit stats history if you're interested in crunching the numbers yourself but it'll be a very rough estimate as I don't update stats on every change so as to keep a random factor in there.

I've extensive experience with Ranged SF (about 7 years) both as units and as militia. They're now my preferred militia if I have walls to defend.

Long ago there were definitely special abilities but I've never tracked whether any of my units have had them or what they may be (I try to play without crunching too many stats). The idea that these should only be discovered in combat has always struck me as odd - surely the trainers at the RC should know what kind of training they're providing? Letting the region owner see this information would make more sense and I'm not sure there'd be any great harm in not listing it in the recruitment page.

IME Ranged SF fight better than equivalent infantry in melee and better than equivalent archers at range. A few time I've used them in melee in skirmish formation and not been too disappointed whereas I'd expect MI or archers to be entirely useless at that point. I've not used Melee SF on their own in several years as if I'm recruiting them it's usually for an existing unit with limited recruitment options at that time. From what I recall they punch hard but their casualty rates tend to be as bad as with equivalent infantry or cavalry which makes them a costly option both in gold and time between recruitment cycles.

Overall I'd say SF work best for characters with high honour who want to pack a reasonable punch in battle but still move fast or as militia garrisons for fortified positions. They also add a nice RP touch to the game.

Sounds like creating an identical template, "LostRealmBoxes", that adds the appropriate category would do the trick.

Actually, nevermind. RealmBox could be modified to have an input for status. Defaults to the current thing, but if "Lost" is put then it adjust and gives the appropriate category.

Just ideas.

My first instinct is to favour the separate template approach as burying logic in page templates can quickly get out of hand. I'll try and make some time this week to dig into all the templates a little so I know what's already there.

Recently updated pages will be a good addition. To be honest I've not much vision for the wiki (well, not beyond my own Family Pages anyway) but if you want some help on the technical side of any of the changes you're contemplating don't hesitate to PM me.

I think you're missing a fairly substantial - if often static - component of the wiki and that's Family pages. Whilst many players never gat around to adding Family pages, where they do exist they often provide a fascinating insight into the character of BM and the reasons a number of us have been playing for years.

It's a pity that the game metadata exposed for Realm pages doesn't include an automated list of families currently active.

It's quite sobering to see how many Lost Realms there are. BM history can sure be a bloody affair with many a trampled dream along the way.

There are still a few false positives in the Realms list but they should all be listed in Old Templates for tidying up by anyone (including me) who has some spare time. I'll put some thought into what a Lost Realm template might look like as it would be nice to have something similar to the normal Realm Box.

Thanks for the goodies :)

I've added a category Old Templates which will for now link to every realm page using templates other than the standard Realm Box so that these can be updated later.

I'll also add some additional subcategories to Lost Realms to better organise by continent as I update pages erroneously showing in Realms and might implement a Template:Lost Realm at some point to add some consistency (if I have a sudden need to procrastinate).

I've made a few changes in the wiki to add page stubs for realms where they don't exist and to ensure pages missing from the Realms and Lost Realms lists have the appropriate template. I've also checked that erroneous realms are marked in the appropriate continent category and as either Realms or Lost Realms.

There are a few anomalies in the lists so I'll check again in a couple of days to see if this is down to caching.

BM General Discussion / Re: Famous Old Characters

Haha I appreciate the welcome!

I'm definitely back on EC, and I've made a foray into Beluaterra ( Where has my beloved Atamara gone?  :'( ).

I'm debating where to go in Dwilight. I prefer PvP to PvE, but it looks like I'm going to have to take what I can get.

On Dwi the Lurias have plans but we need additional numbers and on BT I'm always looking for new blood to assist in Ar Agyr as we've some prime real estate to recover from the hordes.

Development / Re: Adventurers No Longer Using Scrolls - Discussion
« on: September 08, 2018, 01:49:15 PM »
- I love the adventurer game. 1 of my advies is is an apprentice, another on a different island is a sorceress, but now the whole backround story and makeup of those characters is now irelevent.

Brigdha has established a reputation as a powerful sorceress on EC despite never having cast a scroll in her entire career so a huge amount can be achieved purely with RP and judicious use of game mechanics. But I agree that nerfing the use of scrolls for adventurers strikes me as an overreaction to a problem which is rare.

Looking at the event on BT which prompted this change it feels like the GMs are intervening to save Bara'Khur by changing game mechanics and removing the consequences of those game mechanics. Perhaps that's for the good of BT and the GMs are justified in doing so but given all the pressure that's being applied to make players clump into a few large realms it seems to run counter to that imperative.

Also up until now I've never heard anyone describe adventurers using scrolls as a bug so I'd certainly be interested to know when it was logged as such and why until now it's been considered such a low priority when clearly turning off the ability took very little effort.

If we are going to have scrolls doesn't it make much more sense that these would be the tools of adventurers unbound by social conventions than of nobles?

LIES! LIES! LIES!

Jokes aside, I am highly doubtful feyeleanor would do anything to exploit stuff.

I am indeed a most dull and boring player :)
