Feature Requests / Re: Starvation with Teeth
« on: June 12, 2011, 10:17:47 AM »
Meh, I don't know. I guess it adds realism, but it would negate incentives to go to war. And realms on Dwilight, separated by rogue regions, wouldn't even be able to go to war, because by the time they reach enemy territory, they're all starving...

It would increase incentives to go to war if your realm is starving. Maybe your neighbor has extra food but wouldn't sell them. Or maybe you think his prices are unfair. Or maybe he says he doesn't have extra food but you think he's holding out on you. Or maybe he really doesn't have food to spare for you but you just plain don't care anymore. You can wait for all your troops to starve to death, or you can grab some caravans, cross the border, and start looting.

On Dwilight, you'll just have to start planning better, and have your knights bring food along with you on the campaign. That's already implemented. Your troops will eat food from your caravan if the region is starving.

One secession and war has already started in Dwilight due to food price disputes.

On the multiple statuses: for one, I don't think poisoning is SMA. Would you add freezing or fire damage next? Secondly, would you keep track of every single man in every unit? Let's say your unit is 30(+20 wounded), and 10 guys get poisoned. Would that become 20 (+30) or 30 (+10)? Sounds rather complicated to me.

Err, no. I'm not suggesting ice or fire magic. Poison is a weapon that was utilized in medieval Europe.

And SMA only applies to Dwilight. There are other islands.

Development / Re: Infiltrators
« on: June 12, 2011, 04:33:36 AM »
Infiltrators work fine the way they are right now. They do not need to be nerfed or buffed.

It's just a class with a murderous learning curve. (Pun intended.) You'll have a few executed or deported characters on your hands before you figure out how the class should be played.

The players who know what they are doing can inflict a lot of damage with infiltrator characters. Coordinating with a bunch of other infiltrators in your realm helps as well. I've seen entire realms crippled because almost all of their senior leadership have knives in their backs.

Feature Requests / Starvation with Teeth
« on: June 12, 2011, 04:24:45 AM »
Currently, if your troops start starving due to being in a starving region, a few of them will get wounded. Most of these wounds will heal by the next turn. If you have a healer with you, you might take one or two casualties per turn at most, from sitting in a starving region for days.

This doesn't make sense. A healer should not be any help against starvation. A unit sitting in a starving region for a week should take significant casualties.

I propose a new status for troops: "starving". This status will be similar to the wounded status, but not completely.

How they are different:

1. Wounds are only inflicted during battles, or special events like "battling peasants when trying to arrest a priest" or "ambushed while hunting". Starvation is only caused by being in a starving region. So if this feature were to be implemented, each time one of your troops would get wounded due to being in a starving region, he would become "starving" instead.

2. Healers can help your troops in recovering from the "wounded" status instead of dying, but is no help against the "starving" status.

3. Each wounded troop has a chance of recovering each turn, healer or no healer. However, starving troops will NOT recover if the unit remains in a starving region. If you stay in a starving region for a long time, expect a large percentage of your troops to be starving.

4. For realism, the "starving" status may kill troops slower than the "wounded" status. (Or is just less likely to kill each turn.)

How they are similar:

1. Just like wounded troops, starving troops do not participate in battles. Starving troops are not just hungry. They are too famished to walk, much less pick up their weapons and fight.

2. Just like wounded troops, many starving troops will slow down your travel, especially if you do not have carts with you.

3. Just like the "wounded" status, there are two ways to exit the "starving" status. Dying is one way. The other way is recovering normally, which will only happen if the unit is in a region that is not starving. In other words, if the unit is in a region that is not starving, then the starving troops will start recovering normally, just like wounded troops. A few may still die on you though, again, just like wounded troops.

What do you guys think?

Food for thought: Should these statuses stack? I'm thinking no. For simplicity's sake, maybe a wounded troop just dies if he starts starving as well. That sounds realistic to me. Also, we might want to add more fun statuses in the future. (Maybe SF units that can poison enemy troops?) Figuring out the effects of different combinations of statuses would just make it overly complicated for a game. I say if your troop is unfortunate enough to pick up more than one status, he's just dead.

Don't count out SoA just yet. You guys seem to be assuming that all the Fontan players will just rage-quit the moment Fontan dies.  ;D

Atamara / Re: Hail Norland!
« on: March 26, 2011, 06:46:45 AM »
There was one reason for the war and one only, Norland should NOT have attacked MI at that point and they knew it, I heard that many new Norland players lacked patience and wanted more action...combine that with lousy leadership and the outcome was devastating. There was plans for a greater Norland to restore its former glory at that time but I guess stalling for a few weeks was not an option  :(

Of course. In the Great Northern Viking Co-prosperity Sphere, all have to march in lock-step with Great Comrade Sordnaz, or else you'll get purged.  ;)

The judge of Sirion asked us to give him the names of anyone that was tortured and/or killed by Lady Gabriella (an infamous elf-hater who is said to collect elf ears).

It's not torture if it's an elf. They actually enjoy it. ;)

The Cagilan Empire functions very much like a real Empire, particularly in the manner that they create and maintain client states to secure their borders. Coria and Talerium are two such client states.

This is factually untrue. Talerium was one of the original realms. How could it have been created by CE?

You would know this if you did a little research first:

Haha. I'm sorry. You know I have to work in some counter-propaganda into this thread. Otherwise uninformed people who read this thread are going to think that Cagilans are all baby-eaters.

Let's try to keep IC and OOC separate here, even though this entire thread is pretty much a mockery of IC/OOC separation.

I agree that Coria did an excellent job on the negotiations. You have definitely bought CE more time. So there. ;)

Come now. Did CE have any say in the matter in the end?

CE: So how long can you hold the line, Coria?

Coria: Actually our capital is being looted because our Duke wandered into enemy territory on an invitation. We decided to loot Hammarsett instead of running TOs like we should have been. We're pretty close to surrendering here.

CE: Could you please try to hold on? Tara and Talerium are still backing you up.

Coria: Hey... Eston promised us some CE regions if we switched sides...

CE: ... Fine. Do what you need to do to survive.  :-\

Lower tax rates are fine. I also liked the idea of decreasing the training of everyone's units during peace time.

Feature Requests / Judicial Punishments with Teeth
« on: March 20, 2011, 01:53:37 AM »
Right now, a Judge can fine a noble for misbehaving. This isn't actually a punishment on the noble, as he can then just turn around and ask for funds, so that he can keep his men paid. If he doesn't get the money, he'll probably lose his unit and have to wait for next tax day. So either the Lords and Dukes end up footing the bill for him, or the General gets punished instead with a slightly smaller army. Either way, it's not a big deal to anyone involved, and the offender's biggest punishment is possibly a few days of boredom.

I'd like to see the Judge being able to hand down punishments that players would actually want to avoid. Maybe this means making you pay for fines out of your family gold. Maybe this means the Judge can make you lose honor/prestige as well.

Thoughts?

Yep. We were at War with Pian and Luries even, as we didn't hand the City back in time. D'Hara has a thing for coastal cities ;)

Correction: Coastal cities have a thing for D'Hara. 8)

What we've been told in Madina is that D'Hara is likely to hand the region back to further an alliance with Madina for the war with SA.

Seems a shame to me, some of us worked quite hard to make the region rebel and now it's just going to be given straight back to us - given the trend of giving regions back to their former owners, it'll likely go back to the old Duke too :(

D'Hara doesn't want war with anybody. I guess your leadership is lying to you. How shocking.  ::)

Check his profile! He's D'Hara's Banker and he can enjoy seeing three Cities struggle. Well, four now ;)

I know that you mean we're working on securing more food sources, but this being Dwilight, my first thought went to: "What do you mean for now? Are the Zuma coming?! Oh gods!"  ;D
