Development / Re: Special Forces, underpowered?
« on: April 15, 2011, 02:20:40 AM »
I think people need to remember that special forces have unique modifiers for certain damage outputs and for what they take.  For instance, Fontan's Close Combat Fighters are known to be really giant pincushions (steep reduction in ranged hits/casualty ratio, but able to soak up huge amounts of melee hits from infantry.  They also do incredible amounts of dmg in melee.  (Calvary they're just ok against)

For the majority of SF's I don't think it's known how they specialize.  Some might do better against fortifications ( a built in siege engine modifier for instance ).  Others do incredible damage to fortifications etc.

Don't discount the special modifiers.  That's what makes them special.

Hah, I'd forgotten that Gias wrote up a funny bit about Gregor making up the Gregorian calendar.  Cute.

Hossenfeffer was simply too awesome a name for me not to use (was it really '03?).

I remember it being initiated before Atamara, along with family homes.  It was kind of a big deal I got Al Arab as that's where I did start off as Duke with Gregor and later Boeth.

Here's an interesting fact, Gregor was NOT the first ruler of Ibladesh (he was the 2nd), but for the life of me I can't remember the guy who was.  I want to say it was one of James Marshall's characters.

Indeed, my back of the envelope calculations suggest that Gregor, despite having the health of a 91 year old, is really only about 80 years old!

I'd be curious to see how you figured that.  It appears that his latest critical wounding added a year in relatively short order.  For a long time (aka the year or so that I bothered to keep track) he aged just as fast as Serko and Norel.  I was curious since I was putting dates into the family tree on the wiki page for births and deaths.

I think we'd worked it out (we being Stuart and I) that you normally age 1 year every 90 days or 3 months or so.  It was some nice round number like that.

Combat has only seriously changed very recently.  Siege engines were around etc.  They only thing that wasn't really was equipment was the same value for def. and off. and cohesion didn't exist.

I can recall population, but can't recall if it actually declined.. erm it was 8 years ago!  There was an option to call out the militia which gave you 800 man units in the capital when it's threatened (still around? not sure).  It was a hell of a fight though.

How did the Lions disappear?

I only heard stories about how they were all trained to the max and well organized.

A lot of them went to SoA.  Sullivan is still in Fontan last I checked.  He led them.  It's actually a really good model for realms to follow if they can swing it.  10-12 active players who recruit 60 man units of the best in class.  Spend a few days training them up to build cohesion, high numbers of healers and banners.  Let the main army do holding maneuvers till you arrive to smash the enemy.

It'd be interesting to see how it would stack up with the recent changes in combat.

Good point. What are they waiting for.. allies to die so they can take the brute force of Sirion on instead? Great thinking..

Who is to say that Sirion really wants to fight Westmoor?  They're not technically at war.  Also don't forget Gregor blew close to 3600 gold on that tournament for his 90th birthday.  That's 3 days of 100% taxes of his city, for comparisons sake or close to a full month if he got the whole share.

So does this mean we're going to start tracking disease movement among the peasants?  (Wouldn't an outbreak be a fun invasion?)

Erm.. so when family names were added to the game in 03? A lot of churn had already taken place.  I decided to take a name that made the family sound old and so bastardized Relic to Relak.  It's incidentally how I also came up with Arcaea, I simply dropped the h from the bacterial domain name, to imply the ancientness of the culture (if anyone recalls it was setup like a Chinese dynasty from the 1200s or so)

I think spying is great for the game, look at what happened in Westmoor recently.  It brought down a King, and they even managed to point the finger at the other guy!  Reminds me of the good ole days when Oligarch had spies in Fontan.  That was so much fun figuring out who they were and feeding them false info.

Now it's more fun to just chat with old friends in other realms and figure out whats going on by reading through the lines, and writing in your messages there yourself.  It's pretty clear that Gregor wants peace in the North and a return to the old alliance pre-Fontanese betrayl of Sirion (read as forced war by Tom).  Of course nobody has bothered to ask him exactly what he wants, but they might be shocked to find out.

Pah, Norland was the realm which broke the Protectorate of Hasland.  Clearly the realm that spawned Norland was superior in every way, it even managed to hold out against more realms for longer =)

*chuckles* I love how everyone keeps talking about Westmoor's not doing anything.  I don't suppose anyone has figured out exactly why yet, but I'll give you a hint.  There are a few rather large stock-piles of gold.  If someone did the accounting they'd see that Westmoor has been fighting with a sizeable chunk of its income not being thrown into the fight.

Fontan felt to be in steady decay since 2009. Then again, I suppose its decline possibly started before that in 2008 with the CoF business. Or maybe even before that, but at some point in mid-2008 Fontan was actually winning and pushing into Sirion's territory. I remember Avamar was Fontan's and SoA was making progress in the north, and OR was gone.

I have to agree, I think it was when I spun off CoF (more the politics of it than the actual secession).  It saw the formation of Westmoor, a lot of the better military minds went to SoA which sort of split the Fontanese war machine.  I don't think it ever recovered.  The Lions were really a crack team of players, backed by some powerful lords.

We'll see where things go from here =)
