P.S. Perhaps if things had worked differently with PeL you would have.

How's that then?

Assuming you can keep your nobles in line in both realms sure.

Theoretically a good region description shouldn't depend upon which realm owns it.  Just bear that in mind...

BM General Discussion / Re: Colonies and "Enough" Nobles

SoA pretty much /was/ a strategic secession. Having been in the core group that launched the realm, I was privy to most of the discussion regarding the formation of the new realm, and from all I heard I could only conclude that they needed a new realm in ORs back yard to be able to crush them more easily.

As I recall it was for the MoD to get a realm of their own as a monarchy.  Gregor made a huge stink about it not being a democracy as you'll recall.

Members of Oligarch were called orcs by Sirionite elves as an insult without any reflection on their actual race. Orcs as a race have not existed (to my knowledge) in BM at all, though it is possible they were once around in early '03.

It was more an epitaph, though strictly speaking they were a 'race' in the sense that they looked different.  But just like the 'elves' they're all human.  Personally I always loved the 'orcs' versus 'elves' bit.  Speaking as the first Orc King after the reboot of course.

Rebellions have been confirmed to not give fame.

*sniff* It's still something I've always wanted to do.  Guess I'll chase other fame points then, like outcast.  Though I swear Serko should've earned that by now.

How about praise for Sanguis Astroism? Do I have to open a new thread for that?  :P

I'll just say that Sanguis Astroism is the only religion in BattleMaster that has ever really piqued my interest. I don't think any other one has managed to come up with as compelling a religion. And it really has nothing to do with the depth of theology, either. In fact, I think it's quite the opposite. The fact that it is not all written down and set in stone probably has a lot to do with it. There's a feeling that people can contribute and make their mark on things. Rather than have everything carved in stone and handed down from on high, individual players can generally feel like they can help shape the evolution of the theology. So, there's no creation mythos? Feel free to write it, and then we can all get together and debate it. Is there an afterlife among the Stars? Who know. Why don't you write your own interpretation of the Prophet's words and present it to the members for debate. I think that provides for a much better player atmosphere than those religions where one person sits down and writes everything and then tells you what you should believe.

Must not have been involved with Magna Serpaensism at all.  All priests were encouraged to add to the mythos and ritual.  I remember specifically creating a story about why all the Falasan cities were named Barad X to convince some of the nobles of that realm to join.  The pantheon was also setup specifically so that personality types, not character classes, could find a niche.  Vulpes was especially popular with one character.

I recall this coming up on the D-list.  It's an intended feature that you can become a ruler twice over on a continent through rebellion.  I can't recall about secessions, but I'm willing to bet the same applies.

Yes, it does depend on how much you're trying to hide.

But then no one cares if you're hiding 600, 900, or even 1,500 gold. Try seeing how much it would cost you to hide 20,000+ gold, on an ongoing basis. Don't forget to include the initial cost of building/expanding all those safehouses.

Tsk tsk, you should know that you can't hide more than 1800 gold (lvl 6).  Yes I've built a society safe house that high, and yes it cost over 10k roughly speaking.  The funny thing is that you can hire guards to defend the safe-house, which in theory doesn't need any guards since only members can see it.  IIRC it takes 36 gold to maintain, I'll have to double check when I'm in the region.

The reason you can't hide more is to get to level 7 costs more than you can store in the safe-house.  Since you can't use your personal funds in the enlargement, you are stuck at level 6.  Though at level 6 you've basically taken over an entire city block for one safe-house.

I personally like having to get people to travel all that way.  I won't say where, but one of my characters made a trip and encouraged such trips just for that occasion.  It really tells you who's interested and who isn't.

Feature Requests / Re: Change to Mentor position
« on: March 15, 2011, 01:44:37 AM »
Well, as someone who played a mentor for a really long time with Gregor (I think I had 10+ students, most/half of whom are still around years later) I have to say that the new students seem only interested in people with titles (Evidence Serko who is now also a mentor, but out of the four students in Astrum not a single one has replied to his letters).

I originally wrote Gregor's "book" as a supplement to what I was already writing to students.  But it does need to be interactive, and more importantly it needs to give new players a sense of what's going on politically, and militarily.  Giving a brief overview of history helps new people out a ton, and makes them feel like they can join in.

Get to the top of the fame pile...

So, I need a rebellion, a counted win at a tournament (Lelnor won the Joust before, but the fame point wasn't active)...

Those two should put me over.  I nearly had the rebellion, but I was foiled twice in a week on it.

BM General Discussion / Re: Character Alignments
« on: March 14, 2011, 08:27:17 PM »
Well for the Relak's

Nerol - The first king of Perdan and the dead King of Oligarch - It was erm a decade ago, but he's probably closer to Lawful Neutral.

Lelnor - Legendary King of ASI - Lawful Good.  He never could be anything but an honorable guy.

Gregor - Living Lich - Chaotic/True Neutral.  He'll double-cross you if he hates you, he'll be your most loyal friend if he likes you.  He mostly keeps his word, but he's been known to lie to get what he wants or to eliminate a political foe or potential troublemaker.

Boeth - Emperor of The Protectorate, King of Hasland - Lawful Neutral.  He stuck by his agreements, but he wasn't above a bit of underhandedness.  See takeover of Barony Sale and Barony of Icegate.

Serko - Outcast and Madman - Neutral Evil - He's recently gone through some serious changes, but on the whole he's driven by revenge against those who slighted him.  He likes power and money, and does all that he can to not take sides.  But he'll do anything to get power, even if it means purchasing the title to a capital city, assasinating the King so that he can elect himself (yes that happened, he was the only one who voted and he won)

Nerol - Prophet of Magnus - Neutral Good - He'd break the law if it meant serving his god, but generally speaking he was never really selfish.

Giselle - The Doubly Royal - Chaotic Neutral - She's a lot like her father, but with different priorities.  Mercurial might be the best description of her.

Espen - The Scion of Hasland - True Neutral - At the moment he hasn't stood out as a character.

Other minor characters - They were all closer to True Neutral, some more chaotic than others.  Most didn't live more than a few months really.

East Island / War Stories
« on: March 01, 2011, 08:35:56 PM »
Anyone have a particularly favorite war story from this latest round of conflict?  Poor Gregor's been marching all over the place with no fights so far.  Giselle managed to get pissy and stormed off the field after starting to make a name for herself, so I'm a bit dry for combat in the EC at the moment.

This Forum / Re: Opt-In Advertisement

I mostly agree, though maybe not quite so strongly. I would continue to donate for the extra goodies, even if they were available via opt-in advertising. It totally ruins the immersion for me.

Personally the ruined immersion is what would kill it for me too.  But that's probably because of the way I've played the game these years.
