Development / Re: Testers Recruitment
« on: July 13, 2011, 01:28:12 PM »
Wow.

Thanks everyone. This is a much bigger turnout than I expected, and more than I need at this time.

I have picked a couple testers, partly at random partly because I liked what you wrote. I'd like to be especially clear that not being picked doesn't mean anything negative, there were simply too many to choose from and I had to pick a few.

Those of you who were picked will notice a new avatar picture, well actually not avatar, there instead of the shields that thing. Also, you will see a new sub-forum called "Testing" under Development. That's where you should go.

BM General Discussion / Re: Titan System Revalation
« on: July 13, 2011, 12:16:37 AM »
Give out a titans family name and I fear every accused will be trawling forum posts and family histories on the wiki dragging up a thousand reasons why titan X is unfit to judge on this or that matter for past realm/religion/guild Y opposition.

Yes, that would happen.

It would quickly end when I come down on them like a ton of bricks.

That's great input.

I agree on #3, that's a good thing.

I think - and this is a spontaneous thought, so sue me, or better, comment - we may find a middle ground.

We can have an open process, with a set body of Titans who decide. They aren't bound by the discussion, but they are strongly encouraged to take it into account. And they should not be anonymous. They can, I think, be pseudonomynous as in their forum identity doesn't have to reveal who they are in-game. Or they could have a second forum account. But it should be possible to have a name on the decisions.

I would love to be a tester for two reasons. First, I love BM, and I want to give back to the game. Second, I'd love to have a look at new features and have input.

I've been playing for almost 4 years and have played every class and just about every position (I was Duke for about 3 days, so I don't count that as much). I currently play on 4 different continents.

Uh, egamma - check your avatar. You are already a tester. :-)

This is where you can sign up if you're interested in becoming a tester, as described in this thread. Please write 1-2 sentences about yourself, such as how long you've been playing BM and why you want to be a tester.

General Talk / Re: The forums have officially gone to hell

Haha, who goes around clicking on random links? :P ;)

Hmm... I could make a QR code for that link and put that in random places... lots of people would fall for that, out of sheer curiosity. :-)

General Talk / Greasemonkey

Anyone familiar with Greasemonkey?

I have an idea for a script, but don't know if that's possible.

I would like it to add a user-editable field to a profile page, and store whatever I put there and retrieve it when I visit the site again. Something like the Internote extension, except that I want it embedded in the page.

Possible?

Thanks. Yes, diminishing returns is a core concept in BattleMaster. Skills are a great example: The better your skills are, the more it takes to grow them. It's actually the reverse of exponential growth, many growth figures in BM are inverse power functions like that.

And that's necessary, because BM is set in a finite world. Most other games of this kind are set in an infinite world - one where you can basically grow forever. In BM, the income of the land is a fixed factor, and you can't grow it (at least not permanently). That one design decision sets BM apart from almost every other strategy, world-building game out there.

And I think it was a good decision to make.

BM General Discussion / Re: How to decide on giving medals
« on: July 11, 2011, 01:55:54 PM »
The system is designed to reward those who give medals over those who hoard them. So when you feel like you may want to give one, you should do it. Don't throw them out (that's why they are limited), but don't wait forever, either.

Uh, ok. Strange. I'll try to fix it, right now.

This Forum / Re: Reputation?
« on: July 09, 2011, 05:52:31 PM »
The negative rep is supposed to make things easier to read, I'm thinking about the /. karma system here.

But we already have a "report to moderator" link, so I think that's really all we need. I think we'll be fine without a reputation system. Unless someone can name an actual purpose of having one, I think we're fine.

Not knowing how the integration is set up, is it because the integration system used a forum account that didn't have the appropriate permissions to see the sub-forum?

I don't know, and I have too much other stuff to worry about to figure it out.

The forum actually works fine without a reputation system.  ???

Good point. As the current one doesn't work well, and there is no other that works flawlessly at this point, I'll simply disable it.

Actually, I had to make it visible again, otherwise the integration also doesn't work. :-(
