BM General Discussion / Why did Greater Xavax <Insert Action>?
« on: March 16, 2018, 06:27:30 PM »
As some of you know, I had to take a rather large step back from BM lately while I focused on RL situations, the most in my 6 years playing. Those have, thankfully, subsided somewhat and I'm ready to dip a toe back in. To re-acclimate myself, I thought I'd start a thread, and I chose the topic because I've seen a lot of OTHER threads get derailed with extraneous back-n-forth about Why GX did or didn't do a thing. Since my character was a big driver behind a lot of said things, i thought I'd provide a place for those discussions here in case any of you have burning questions/observations so that old threads wouldn't need to be revived or new ones hijacked.

So, let the fun begin?

Helpline / I forgot to save an RP...
« on: October 31, 2017, 09:41:13 PM »
And I am totally distraught because I thought I HAD saved it, like I try to save everything. Turns out I was wrong. I am referring to the Bathouse RP, which was the last Xavax RP, that was held in First Oligarch during the TO a month ago. Is it possible to recover those messages?

BM General Discussion / Villains Needed!
« on: October 12, 2017, 12:05:49 AM »
I chanced upon a nefarious idea suggested to me that I wish to adopt and make my own. All I can tell you is that it may affect one OR two of the characters I play on. Any more than that is strictly need-to-know.

I need a group of 10-15 players willing to play evil, brutal, cunning characters. I need Palpatine's, Thrawns, Littlefinger's, Cersei's, Loki's, Ultron's,  Ares's, Hades's, and Crowly's. I want you to round up every vicious criminal and gunslinger in the west. Take this down: I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, !@#$-kickers and Methodists.

I need daimons.

If interested, either comment here or, for the truly cunning, PM me or one of my characters. I'll note your name down and IF I get enough people, I'll commence the operation and send you the inside scoop.

Feature Requests / Approved: Add Wikilinks to Signatures
« on: September 27, 2017, 12:22:46 AM »
Summary:
  • In the game's current form, it's the wiki that helps make the world feel alive. Every in-game message you send automatically includes your character's signature. I believe players should have the option in BM settings to link/match their signatures to their wiki, changing the text color from the standard white to the indicative blue.
Details:
  • This feature would add a section to the EDIT DATA section. An Open text field where players can copy and submit the wiki url to their family page. After submission, Titans will receive a review alert (Similar to Region description Approval notifications) to check the link for accuracy and approve the request. Once approved, all future messages from this player will be hyperlinked.
  • Players that have chosen this option will have their FIRST/LAST name in their signature change from White to hyperlink blue.
Benefits:
  • Incentivizes players to use and explore the Wiki.
  • Simplifies/Specifies important information that knights, having grown up in the world, should already possess in-game knowledge of.
  • Titan approval requirement will limit possible abuse.
  • Feature can be expanded to include realms, guilds and religions so that at a glance, players who receive these messages can quickly and easily navigate the wiki to find have everything they need to know right on hand.
  • New players who may not even be aware of the wiki or its uses will discover a new way to enrich their BM game experience. Older players may find new motivation to establish, clean up and expand the original content on their wikis
Possible Downsides or Exploits:
  • Players could attempt to link to third party sites, but this should be checked by the Titan approval requirement.
  • If players for any reason choose to rename/relocate their wiki page, they will have to submit a new request as their hyperlink will have been broken.

Helpline / Dukes and Duchies
« on: September 26, 2017, 07:13:17 PM »
I was wondering about exploring the functionality of dukes. Why is it that Dukes can't manage their duchies the same way a lord can manage their regions? If a duke can appoint a lord, why can they not dismiss them? Why cant one duchess make an agreement with another to exchange a region from one duchy to the other if the mood strikes them? Why can't Duke's designate a ducal capital or a trading hub? Why can't dukes poor money into their duchies to improve things like roads.

I was going to make a feature request, but I'm unsure of where to begin. The Duke game seems a bit limited in terms of game-supported actions/options compared to their real-life medieval counterparts.

Helpline / New realm banner/Icon?
« on: August 21, 2017, 09:26:44 PM »
Hi All,

I uploaded a new banner/icon request last week because the peasants made me do it and it hasn't gone through? All the measurements should have been right. Who should I reach out to?

Thanks!

BM General Discussion / New Player Experience
« on: July 24, 2017, 09:39:06 PM »
Anaris has mentioned a number of times that he was interested in getting more data regarding new-player experience so the game could be improved to retain more new players. I wanted to start this topic so that everyone could chime in one place. Please comment about your experience as a new person or working with new players to assimilate them to the game.

In my experience recruiting for this game, I have gotten three big questions:
  • What do I do next/now?
  • How do I do _____?
  • I'm overwhelmed, what's going on?
It's my experience that most people, and virtually all new players, to not utilize the wiki to its capacity, if at all. Even if they are sent links in-game. New players also seem very reluctant to send messages.  New players are always confused by the real-time vs turn-based aspects of the game. I guess the biggest thing is that they want all the information they need to be more convenient to access.

BM General Discussion / Get your character art!
« on: July 19, 2017, 12:14:41 AM »
It is a wonderful thing to see your character drawn to life. I first encountered the artist after he posted a doodle of drizzt to the 5e forum online and contacted him after being impressed with his work. In short order, he understood exactly what I wanted done and churned out a sketch within a couple days. I figured that all of us BM players would love it, so I worked with him to put this pricing thing together. Please forgive the poor resolution. The forum can only support relatively small data files and I had to cut the original down to 20% of its initial size. Idk about getting upfront discounts, but it may be possible if you tell him Selenia or JeVondair from Battlemaster sent you.

If you decide to use his services, i would love it if you shared the results here! Best believe I will be commissioning more from him in the near future!

Roleplaying / Death of Tileni of Luria
« on: May 26, 2017, 07:52:17 PM »

Rania was awake, as was her habit, long before first light. The sun rose at her back as She made her way to the town square in Outer Giask and was surprised to find a crowd awaiting her. Everything from brown rags to flashes of silk and steel. They grew silent at her approach, parting like fog to allow her forward. She'd never had an audience before.

It was eerie.

Tileni was already there, waiting for her. Her armor shined. Rania was not an expert on armor, the sandborn eschewed metal in favor of leather, and could not tell if the armor was freshly purchased, but she could tell that regardless of its origin, the Ranger had cared for it well, oiling the metal to a blinding sheen. It was presumptuous, and Rania felt that Teleni's undeserved arrogance required a lesson. It is what had been the initial source of the conflict between the two women, after all. Teleni had presumed to be Rania's equal, despite her low-birth, which had earned Rania's ire and started them down the wrathful chain of events that would bring one of them to their doom today. She affected a haughty smile as Rania stopped before her, the crowd closing in behind. Tileni was not a small woman, nor was she unlovely, but her skin had the weathered look and scars of a tough life lived. She was reminded that this woman used to slay monsters for a living.

Of course, Tileni had never faced any monster like Rania before...

Rania smiled.

Taking the smile for the challenge that it was, Tileni looked her up and down. "You're late, sandeater." A few laughs and a catcall or two rippled through the crowd. This was Luria Nova, after all. There was no love for D'Harans here. Rania expected insults, but what she did not expect was the coldness of it. It was not said so much in anger as it was specifically calculated. Something to throw Rania off balance. Rania revised her gauge of Tileni upward while the other woman went on playing to the crowd. "I knew I said I had a pig to spit, but I never imagined how closely you'd fit the image. I might have walked instead of taking a quick boat to get here. Then maybe you'd have had time for a bath!"

More chuckles, louder this time. Rania ignored them. Stripping down to her fighting leathers. She had changed into the only other outfit she owned, black and red leather armor, segmented for flexibility and named for a particularly nasty breed of scorpion back in the Desert of Silhouettes. The long, intricately braided queue of black hair was tucked into the back. If the outlandish outfit gave Tileni pause, she overcame it, readying another insult when the town official stepped forward.

"A Challenge has been issued and accepted," The old man rasped."Today, honor can only be satisfied by blood-"
"Aye, in the highest tradition of true knights of Luria," Tileni spat. Rania ignored them both. Stretching, working her shoulder sockets, bending her knees, cracking joints to loosen them up. Then stood absolutely still, watching with eyes that seemed to blink too much.
"By the power vested in me, By His Glorious Majesty Emperor Sholan, by the light of the-"

"Shut up old man, get out of the way and ring the bell." Tileni interjected. "Breakfast is waiting."

Intimidated, the old official scurried to the side, raising his hand to signal the tolling of the bell. And the moment the hammer struck brass, Rania aggressively leapt into action, momentarily surprising Tileni and forcing her back before she rallied and the fight was on!

Rania had not been idly waiting in Outer Giask. She had studied everything she could about her opponent. Reviewing Tileni's infuriating letters, seeking out information on her family, interviewing Lurian nobles. So she knew what a formidable opponent Tileni could have been. Just as she knew that Tileni's pride would be her own downfall.

Blades clashed in the dawn light as Tileni applied every trick she'd learned over years. The two women were evenly matched in size and speed, even in age. But armed with her knowledge of her opponent, Rania grew more confident of her victory with every strike and parry. Her research on Tileni had revealed one constant fact: The Ranger was a woman who believed she'd earned the right to arrogance. She was proud of her achievements, even more so of her skills in warfare. And to a swordsman, that means one thing. Any mediocre swordsman will tell you that their are a few basic forms of combat. The aggressive, the neutral, and the defensive. A more skilled bladesmith will have learned the overrun strategy, while true masters of the blade are so in tune with themselves and their steel that they can perform tricks of the blade that would leave an opponent stunned as well as dead. Tileni was truly a master swordswoman and, apparently hoping that Rania's bark was worse than her bite, had opted to display her most advanced skills. Unbeknownst to Teleni, Rania too was an extremely talented fighter, and she opted to forgo flashy displays in favor of simply getting on with it.

The crowed oohed and ahhed as Tileni went to work. Her blade a latticework of reflected sunlight. Her feints surprised even Rania.

Until Rania brought the Ranger back to basics.

Step, slash, step, stab, step, riposte. Rania countered Tileni's dexterity with vicious ferocity, forcing the other woman towards a wall. If Tileni was growing desperate, she did not show it, continuing to redirect Rania's thrusts at the last possible moment to buy herself some time.
Step, swing, block, step upper-slash, pommel strike. That last glanced of Tileni's pauldron harmlessly as the ranger spun to the side. Suddenly, Rania was perplexed to find a boot in her chest, propelling her backwards towards the center. She stumbled, keeping her sword in front of her as she tracked Tileni. Wincing. Tileni noticed and smiled a wolf's grin, somehow knowing that her kick had fractured one of Rania's lower ribs. She feinted high, drawing Rania's sword upwards, only to hook a foot under Rania's own, pulling the sandborn off balance. Rania fell. White pain stabbed through her chest as she hit the cobblestone. She rolled, just in time to hear steel strike the stone where she'd been.

"And now, desert vermin, I am going to crush you like the insect you are," Tileni taunted as Rania rose to her feet, her breathing labored.

"Come then, you well-bred bitch" Tileni scoffed, "Let me show you what the dirt is like.

Rania obliged.

Back to basics. Step, swing, block, step upper-slash, pommel strike. Glance off pauldron. Wait for it-

Rania performed the same aggressive attack combination, knowing how Tileni would react. Sure enough, the ranger went for a kick to the chest. The same trick-move that had caught Rania earlier. Rania pinned Tileni's leg underneath her arm, locking it there and lifting with her legs, throwing the other woman into the ground and, riding her momentum, Rania thrust forward with all her strength and ran the Ranger through armor and sternum. A cry went up from the crowd. Tileni's eyes widened with shock, legs kicking spasmodically as she struggled with lungs that refused to work around so much steel.

"I swore I'd teach you a lesson, Ranger" Rania whispered, breaking her silence for the first time into Tileni's dying breaths the rangers hands tearing at her armored chest. "Welcome back to the dirt."

Teleni's struggles grew weaker as Rania laid the other woman's head, curiously gently, respectfully, to the ground. Surgeons rushed forward, but it was already too late...

Rania staggered to her feet, turning towards the inn. She felt no elation of victory. She felt tired, her chest hurt like hell, and most of all, she felt...dirty.

BM General Discussion / Should Infiltrators be able to Kill
« on: May 23, 2017, 11:51:11 PM »
This thought has been bouncing around in my head for a while, ever since someone a while back posted about advy's being able to rob each other (I wish they could...its a rough world out there).

Why shouldn't an infiltrator have a chance of actually killing one of their targets? How does relegating them to only being able to inflict wounds contribute to the realism of the game? Death is a part of this game.

Feature Requests / Rejected: New Class - Hospitaller
« on: May 23, 2017, 10:56:24 PM »
Summary: Since this is Battlemaster, i think it would make sense to have a class devoted to helping wounded soldiers heal after battle.

Description: If you haven't heard of the Knights Hospitaller, they were a chivalric Medieval military/religious order chartered to treat and care for the poor that arose in the 12th century. They were not necessarily priests, neither were they cavaliers. While they eventually became a formidable military order on terms with the Knights Templar, their origins were centered around hospitals. I envision a class with similar honor/prestige requirements to the Cavalier. But instead of leading larger amounts of troops, they lead less. After a battle, in the actions tab, they can select from a dropdown menu listing all units in the region and choose to "Heal Wounded" and select how many hours they want to spend doing so. This would not effect wounded nobles (that was on the rejected list), but it will help their units recover their strength for another round of fighting. It would require a new statistic, healing, to be added to the game. Like priests, they should be required to be affiliated with a religion in order to adopt the class. Unlike priests, they can lead troops to war and should have a higher cap than Courtiers. Say 50 men total. Unlike Cavaliers, they do not gain assured honor/prestige from battles. Rather, they earn it through service acts like healing, civil work, etc. Maybe their healing affects religion percentage to a small degree in regions.

Benefits: Fits Milieu and time period. Troop number/honor-gain limit will discourage players from spamming the class. Will be a plus to small, impoverished realms as befitting hospitaller historical origins. Add's new options for RPing (especially for those of you that love druids)

Downside: As always with big updates, I'm sure there will be a ton of bugs to work through.

Feature Requests / Under Debate: Marriages
« on: May 23, 2017, 10:36:23 PM »
Summary: I triple-checked, Vita, this was not on the Frequent list!

Description: Battlemaster is a medieval sim. There are game mechanics to support war, trade, tourney's, raiding, and religions. And yet there is no game mechanic to support one of the biggest parts of medieval life: marriages. Whether it be for love or the far more usual political/economic advantage, marriage was without doubt a matter of pinnacle importance and I believe adding a mechanic to support it would not only fit the milieu, but deepen the game. What I envision could be simple: Two people in the same region select from a menu in the actions tab, same as they would duels, instead there is a wedding option. It could also be complex...like a new thing that only priests can do by going into the religion tab, selecting two names from a dropdown menu denoting characters in the same region, and sending a wedding request to both parties who, upon agreeing, are wed at next turnchange. An update goes into their family history "Sonso married Suchnsuch." This would be a permanent thing, till death do us part. And only the deletion or death of a character could annul it...much like in the middle ages.

Benefits: Roleplay, fits milieu, potentially adds extra value to priests if you go that route

Drawbacks: I am bad at this. All of my ideas are perfect.

BM General Discussion / Understanding Takeovers
« on: May 23, 2017, 09:18:12 PM »
I have some questions about Takeovers in general.
  • Is there any game-mechanic difference between hostile and friendly takeovers?
  • Do Friendly takeovers make the population like you more?
  • Do Brutal takeovers complete faster? Is there a point to balanced TO options?
  • If your unit has more men, how much more effective are you at TO actions by contributing percentage?
  • When TO's are complete, shouldn't the region be at core control initially before depreciating?
I have been unable to answer these questions when asked and would like more insight. Thanks!

Feature Requests / Rejected: Improving Weapons/Armor
« on: May 23, 2017, 06:36:43 PM »
Summary:  I did not see this in the list of rejects so please correct me if I am wrong, but this would just be an option in a city region with a blacksmith under the Unit Orders tab where, in addition to the training option, you can also pay gold to improve your troops equipment.

Description: As written, I envision being able to sit in a city and slowly improve the quality of my soldiers equipment the same way we can improve their training. Equipment damage should be at zero before work can begin, but otherwise works the same way training does.

Benefits: Allows you to improve your unit without loosing it and/or loosing your captain

Downsides: Realms with crappier RC's might not be encouraged to build better ones I guess. I'm not good at this.
