"Captain Sieger's Mystery Meat for the hungry beSieged." Read a Banner strewn across the eastern wall facing the city. Lord Amyclas had moved "Spa Nebel", the nickname for his mobile Command Post, which still traveled with his giant bath tub that he was fond of holidaying in, to within the battlements and towers of the eastern wall. While the marshal lay curled up in his tub supposedly napping until the fighting started, the men had started a small tavern within the walls: complete with multiple stills and a sausage manufactory that ran on rat-catching hunting parties, and meats found from other sources best not mentioned.

By Amyclas' orders, the women who came in were to be treated as Lurian. And many of them were fine, well kept Lurian women - clean, soft and nice-smelling. The poor and undesirables had died by the droves. Many of the local men were killed in recent unrests, and those men that weren't were often pre-emptively beaten and abused by soldiers playing at enforcing civil law. No rape or sexual exploitation of the women was permitted. But many of the women groped and poked the soldiers anyway, both genders grasping at last pleasures and moments of comfort before they faced death. The soldiers were generous with the sausages. And the women who came in gladly swallowed them.

Outside, the streets reeked with the stench of the dead...

Meanwhile, Amyclas paces up and down in his chamber, it had been a long day of staring at maps, reading reports and sending letters. He needed some amusement before he tried to get himself killed again. He gets a scribe to send out the following letter to everyone:

You are all hereby invited to Spa Nebel at Port Nebel's Eastern Outer Walls, 3rd Turret, Top Floor Penthouse for a cocktail party. You will dine on the finest cuisine Port Nebel has left to offer. We will be serving only the strongest home-made liquors matched with the city-wide hit, "Captain Sieger's Mystery Meat" sausages, made from only the freshest mystery meat and top-quality sawdust. While you are here, you can also:

    - Enjoy paranomic views of the D'haran camp from the turret battlements.
    - Experience the ultimate relief in the cleanest stone built arrow-slit toilets.
    - Take a bath with the youngest, and most good looking marshal in the realm.

Hesitate no further, come down to Spa Nebel today, and experience THE party that Luria will be remembered for till the end of time.

Siege at Port Nebel

"The Arms of Luria will from henceforth be known as the Promachoi. For we will be the first to die." I groaned at a random boy from atop my litter as 4 of them dragged me away...

The red sun sank behind us as a cold wind whistled through the stones of the Citadel. I stood atop our walls, with Luria's Men at Arms spread in a thin line at the foremost ranks, a hard outer shell around the dense infantry formations behind them. Their kite shields emblazoned in the motiffs of Sun, Moon and Earth in a wall of solid steel.

The enemy stood arrayed in their thousands. A riot of banners, Fissoa, Barca, D'Hara, spread in their proud challenge. My mouth went dry at the sight. Plans and speeches forgotten in the moment. As my tongue failed me, then silence must suffice. I unsheathed 4 feet of tempered Askileon Steel, finished and etched with the purest gold. I felt the deft weight of its three and a half pounds, and grinned inside at the thought of the destruction it would sweep through the battlefield. Holding it close to my shoulder in vom Tag I lowered the beaked visor of my Hounskull bascinet and closed my thoughts to all else but the fight.

Thick volleys of arrows were exchanged on both sides. But many of the enemy's fail short of our high walls. A few reached up and found their marks. The Arms of Luria shouldered the preliminary rains with stoic resolve as arrows lashed and bit at gaps in armour. No man flinched. We stared into the jaws of the belfries as they prepared to spew their loads at our faces. Shields held high, swords gleaming in the moonlight, all pointing front.

Then it started raining men, praise the Bloodstars. They ran screaming into our swords as we surged to meet them. The Arms of Luria bashed into the first wave like an armoured fist, as thick columns of Emberborn and city militia threw their weight behind them. The enemy flailed like angry children against our heavy armour as we cut them down like grass. I saw the battlements in a red haze. With each stroke I drew blood, guts and brains. There were no tactics nor thoughts of maneuvering with the sword. I simply hewed into their dense formations which burst open like sacks of the sweetest wine.

A Barcan Noble in his heavy plate, surrounded by similarly armed men cut down a group of city militia in another section of the walls. I raised the Arms of Luria to block his advance. Armoured men clashed against each other in a storm of swords. But Luria had the stronger Arm, and threw down the Barcan and his men from her walls. I tore through a cluster of mail and flesh and stood to face the noble. I swung at him in a wild frenzy and he brought his blade down hard to meet me as was his best option. In the bind, I took the middle of my blade in my gauntlet, pivoted around his midsection and blundgeoned the gorget of his throat with my pommel in a barstard's cross. Disengaging, I raked the edge of my sword along the dented section to open it further. The Barcan fell to his knees in a torrent of arterial blood as I hacked at his helmet through his weakening attempts to block.

Satisfied the enemy warrior would not rise again, I surveyed the field and saw the attackers were thrown back along all other sections of the wall.I leapt off the battlements and sallied forth down the enemy's own siege engines and charged the heels of the fleeing foe. Then the main drawbridge lowered and Sif's Mounted Death rode forward. They slammed into the forward ranks of archers and were promtly shot to pieces by those behind.

Charging forward with Kamron's Emberborn and the remains of the city infantry, we met the enemy archers. I aimed myself at the Barcan unit with the most colorful banners. Cutting them down like monsters squashing sheep, 6 of their banners fell and the unit was routed.

Only Kamron and myself remained on the field, with our men behind us. Unprotected by high walls the rear ranks of D'Haran and Fissoan archers poured volley after volley into us as we attempted to advance into them. Most of my men had survived the melee, but were finally succumbing to torrents of arrow fire. Then I took an arrow to the knee, and could advance no further. I lay prone on the field amongst my men, most of whom had immobilizing wounds, but were well protected behind their armour. We watched the remaining archers duel each other as we sang laconic songs of praise to the Bloodstars and Lurian gods for our good fortune at being alive and mostly having fallen at the same spot.

When the healers came to drag us away, they cursed at the weight of our armour and the maddening lack of carts. I made a note to my scribe to have the name of the unit changed to commemorate our deeds on the field.

The scribes of the Lacedaemon family approve this message and all the comedy that shall arise from it. We are honored to document the miseries of even the basest peasant and hope everyone would sympathize with their plight and someday treat all commoners like Kings. Just as it is in Luria, and so it shall be in all the world....

Arundel for emperor! Because we need strong players on the throne, not strong characters! And the powergamers will follow them regardless of what anyone says about legal claims...

The way to make a guild profitable for the founder/elders/certain people is to set up a large monthly fee (say, 10 gold per month, or more) for those on the bottom of the pyramid, and then have a large monthly grant for those on top. Then you need a compelling reason for people to join the guild (such as only handing out lordships and other positions to those in the guild). Having a fee to move up the pyramid helps too--possibly with very large sums to move up the rungs, with corresponding decreases in the monthly fee as they move up the rungs.

It's just like in any organization... you don't have to be the best, you just need to be first in a position to promote your peers.

I think nobles need to be more killable. The number one cause of a noble "leaving" is still pausing or inactivity rather than killed in action. Higher mortality would surely lead to more volatile politics and !fun!. Perhaps allowing executions without banning might help.

For that there is the General Discussion thread on the Forum.
No need for the Locals.
The Locals are the the reason why IC none talks about IC things and why people prefer to talk about it here.

So what we really need, are IC forums!

Piracy, for fun and profit. And for bums like me who play free games like Battlemaster.

* moderator note: sorry, can't allow torrent links on a public forum we have our names attached to. *

I like your rule 2: go big or go home.

What about all those poor little knights in overcrowded realms with few opportunities for advancement...  :-[

Dwilight,

Massive infantry shield wall watches while Javelin men heroically charge monsters. All other soldiers grateful for their sacrifice. Locals celebrate. Adventurers desperately try to stop the next horde from forming. Baron Amyclas invites the King home for a discourse on faith... and a bath.

I absolutely insist that power gaming and acting can go together. You can optimize for success, then sing an epic tale of valour about it afterwards. Without victory, there can be no freedom to tell your own tales!

Stabbity's convoluted plots are a demonstration that you can play the game like a game-of-thrones series. Perhaps it's just that most human beings lack the social understanding to pull such things off.

I believe that ic and ooc separation goes out the window once you have people who will play to win. Ultimately, you don't just deceive or screw over a character, but also a person who controls the character and tries to act in its best interests. When you plot against characters, you plot against people - you're not playing against fictional strengths and weaknesses of someone's avatar, but against a person who thinks and trusts and hopes.

Also, unless you have a Lord who is really on the ball about dealing with his relationship with his knights, the game pretty much begins at Lordship.

Looks good to me.

If it's good enough for that fine gentleman, then it's good enough for me.

Just open the forums already. Trying to control public opinion and perception is like herding cats. None of your plans will survive contact with the player base, and you will never get it right.

I find it a bit ludicrous that some believe that this game needs academies. Success in battlemaster is often more of a matter of politics than "knowledge" or "skill".

Kiss arse, prove yourself reliable, and see promotion. Align yourself with more powerful and ambitious superiors. Then take part in plots and wreck havoc with the rest of them.

When one becomes Lord, it's a simple matter of trial and error to push buttons and optimize settings. The nuances of battle or region management can be easily read up. After attaining title of Lord you can set your sights on Duke, Banker, Marshal, Judge... if no opportunities exist, you can always conspire to create your own.

It is interesting than Fallangard has a formal initiation program. I'm sure some form of structure could help newbie retention.

My first Lord serenaded me with promises of flowers, rose gardens and honourable service...

Roleplay makes things interesting. Without it we have this data driven text game where we push buttons on a screen.
