Development / Re: improving the game via prison
« on: August 29, 2013, 05:51:20 AM »
1. Reducing prison time for new players is a great idea.

2. Lengthening prison time for rulers/government members/dukes is a bad idea without other changes being made to make it more acceptable. These should include:

I. Not having prison count as inactivity time (Rulers in prison can continue to be rulers)
II. Allowing prisoners to send letters as normal, but have the judge be able to read ALL letters sent. (This will allow them to continue doing their job.)

The problem I see with this idea in general is that we're trying to use both the carrot and the stick. Yes, make things better for new players, but there is no reason to make things worse for older players. A week is quite long enough. Prison right now stops you from playing the game. That is the problem. Allow people to still play the game while in prison and you no longer have a problem. Just place other restrictions on them.

It is completely off-topic. If it is not, then please tell me what has the breaking up of CE alliance to do with shutting down of Locals? Will the discussion about "need-to-break-up-evil-CE alliance" somehow save the Local forum section or even contribute towards the first post written by Tom? (please see his starting post for reference)

When referencing the first post, I'd say half of the last 5 pages are off-topic.

But, I think the main topic overall is what is destroying battlemaster. Tom is arguing that it is forummaster that is at fault. Others, such as myself, are arguing other reasons.

Well, seeing as the topic is about local forums, and this Atamara discussion is one of the ones of the local forum which is in question, I don't see it as being completely off topic. A tangent perhaps, but not off-topic.

As to CE, I don't think anyone is saying CE itself is full of sheep. CE is quite possibly one of the best realms in the game. It is CE's allies (which at last count is nearly every realm on the continent) that are a lot of times full of sheep. I think CE just gets an overly bad name because people assume it is the one in control, and most of its allies are its puppets.

Doesn't that mean this is a good idea Vita?

Just trying to understand what you're saying.

It would also provide a disincentive to realms to conquer additional regions unless they are overflowing with nobles. I'm not yet sure if that's a good or a bad thing, but it should be taken into consideration.

Personally, I think simply raising player density may provide enough extra fun and engagement to most realms that our retention rate will improve enough to begin expanding again.

Hi, nice to see your post.

I definitely agree with you that all day-to-day operations of realm functioning should occur within the game (and realm) and not through the forum or irc by any means.

I can only speak for myself, but that is how I run my realm at least. I focus on all character related information being sent in-game and making sure that I try and send a public message from my ruler to the realm as a whole at least once every three days or so to encourage discussion and keep the realm up-to-date on how things are going.

Granted, I also use the forum and irc. I use the forum mainly for finding out what is occuring on continents I am not playing on, or discussing island wide events, which I am already aware of for continents I am on. In irc, I do discuss things with other players, but primarily it is just chatting. We chat about stuff happening in real life, movies to see, etc... and don't really do any actual real planning in irc channels.

That is just my thoughts though. So while I understand how "forummaster" can be seen as harmful, I don't believe that has been my personal experience.

Thank you for your input.

BM General Discussion / Re: Limited Wars

If I can't take them, I will drive them rogue. It doesn't matter if I can have them, the important thing is that I deny them to you.

The idea of limited wars in a good one. But t is very hard to come up with some way to enforce or incentivize this. Tim's "grand cycle of war and peace" idea is a possible one that could have some good effects.

That is a good point.

Well, one way to do it would still be to make regions more loyal (than they are now) the closer to the capital they are. This would prevent people from driving them rogue as well as slowing takeovers.

Old characters have history entrenched power, they have personalities established friends and enemies, background stuff that is hard for new people to learn about, character.

New characters are bland vital for the game's future. They are usually just embodiments of their players great ways for things to change, without any proper RP surrounding them. RPs written by their players tend to be cheesy different, because anyone can make up anything they bring a new face to things.

Fixed that for you.

Your previous statement was full of statements which just indicate a reason this game is dying.

Check the ruler roster on AT ^^

This is the truth.

Ruler of Tara is 91. Ruler of Talerium is 94.

The average ruler age on Atamara is probably 70+.

It has dropped slightly recently. It used to be much higher.

Why not simply roll a dice a few times, and choose say 5-10 regions on continents and make those regions start being undead and monster spawning havens.

Don't point out which ones they are, and make it them spawn up within the area of those regions and not necessarily all from that region itself. Then highly increase the spawn rate there.

Make adjustments from the random initial dice roll to make sure that the spawn sections are at least somewhat evenly spread out.

Then, just make it such that by holding the central region, for X number of time, (say a month) you can start reducing the spawn rate there.

Meanwhile, double the spawn rate continent wide.

Honestly, a simple mechanic that stops wars from being able to mechanically takeover an entire realm (unless they started small) makes sense to me.

The cultural idea also makes sense. Make it that much more difficult to takeover regions next to a capital. And make it even harder to hold onto regions far away from capitals.

You are trying to solve a social problem with a mechanic. People WILL line up a 2nd character. If you restrict character count, that character will simply not be created until the other is dead. But I can guarantee you that if this were to be implemented, the replacement character would show up in the realm the day after the other one died, and be handed all the titles and other stuff as soon as game mechanics allow for it.

And if we increase those limits further, say raising prestige limits, the replacement character will simply be made and "leveled up" on another island and then immigrated as required.

Players WILL find ways around this.

I doubt that.

Even still, just make it a rule in the Social Contract. Bam, done.

I want OOC discussions and encourage them. That's why the game always had a place for this, first the discussion list now this.

It is the mix of IC and OOC that has always caused trouble wherever you encounter it. That is why the Locals forums were closed, not any other. IC stuff should remain in-game and OOC stuff shold remain out of the game. It really is as simple as that.

If this is true, then you shouldn't close the Local forums. You should open them up again and simple increase moderation forcefulness.

I readily volunteer to moderate the Atamara forum. I read every post anyway, and can be quick about it. Just place firm moderation in place, and the locals will be a boon to the game. Deleting them though is a mistake.
