Development / Re: mentors?
« on: May 23, 2015, 06:16:49 PM »
This is prob a stupid question, but why did the former mentor system disappear? When I first started (like 11 or 12 years ago) that system worked perfectly and provided some fame possibilities for the mentors as well.

iirc the idea was that mentoring shouldn't be an IG thing, but something between players (old system had mentors as a subclass, you could even "write" books)

Most people don't keep a logbook, so I think we just forget about what happened to our characters - and reinvent the past to fit our current needs.

But there's plenty of players who write for the Story rather than their characters. The Arundel family comes to mind :P

So basically the same as any succesful realm?

Some realms become stale simply because they exist too long. Wouldn't part of the fun be to see how far we can get on a (disposable) realm, only to relocate when we hit a wall? If we keep it fresh I'm sure we'll attract new players to join the caravan. Of course you can only relocate so many times, but it might be cool to see if we can reach critical mass.

Aye!

I'm not into the whole evil wizardry thing though. What if we just pop a character each onto a continent with the express intent to cause mayhem? Each character goes about it in their own way, and the better the job they do the easier it will be to find each other and unite forces.

"Oh, I heard Sir Kepler looted his own capital! Maybe we could be friends?"

A minimum of support from some kind of establishment would be required though, and preferably free lands to colonize (so Dwilight? Or simply a low density realm that can be ... swayed to see the light)

Goal of the realm would be to hold a single region as capital, and raid/plunder for anything it needs. Surely at least one realm would like to ally such a band of misfits :D

I am glad to report at least one success! A player came on IRC earlier crediting reddit (and your post when further prompted) to directing him our way. They are a MUD and tabletop gamer, so seems a natural fit. They should be playing in Luria and Perdan, as I recall discussion going.

huzzah!

There have been many player-led initiatives in the past to try to recruit more players, over various platforms. I do not recall any achieving tangible results.

After my last post I made one on reddit - 18 upvotes. not exactly a success but perhaps one or two new players sign up. Maybe we should set up some kind of recruiting scheme where we agree to post regularly on these kind of forums and report on it here

While this can sound very stupid, why not "invest" in sites like 9gag!? There are a lot of "nerds" there. With th fame of GoT and Vikings, I think BM can find at least some good players.

Good suggestion, two issues: 9gag is too mainstream, gaining interest through these platforms is not easy. Just posting a few memes won't suffice. Any concrete ideas?

Helpline / Re: Shipyard and navies
« on: April 04, 2015, 09:02:10 AM »
Well I read up a little on the subject. In "The English Coast: A History and a Prospect", Peter Murphy states:

Quote
During the Middle Ages shipbuilding was ad hoc locations, sometimes associated with basic docks dug on the foreshore, storehouses and smithies. Other associated features at medieval and modern shipyards included sawpits, ponds for timber seasoning and ropewalks (...)

But even then. If 500 gold doesn't always supply you with a building, associated smithies and competent trainers, I don't see how 700 gold can net you a shipyard with smithies, skilled craftsmen and the infrastructure not to just build boats but navies.

Though I think I've weighed in enough on this. Feel free to disregard

I don't know offhand what regions shipyards can be built in. But once you have a shipyard, that is the infrastructure you need to build fleets of ships.

It's no use getting further into this as I'm not sure what regions can hold shipyards either. Oops :) thanks for taking the time to answer

As long as it's a coastal region, I don't see the problem.

If it's landlocked, and still allowed to build a shipyard, that's a bug.

So am I misreading the meaning of navies as groups of military-class vessels? How would you get the infrastructure to build those in a woodland region? Or a stronghold that can't even muster up enough competence to change bonds into gold?

From a gameplay perspective I see no issue (maybe even the need to allow for all sea zones to have navies, even if no cities are on its coasts)

Going on a tangent here, but how do you expain navies in woodland areas? or even townlands and strongholds?
