Dwilight / Re: Monster Problems
« on: August 28, 2016, 12:47:36 AM »
Alright I'm getting seriously tired of all these monsters. Luria player here. We have been planning for quite a while to split our realm, once we had recovered a bit, to add a little more dynamism and maybe attract some new players. Several months ago, I announced the realm split and told people to prepare for it happening a few weeks later.

Then a monster horde arrived and took a few regions. We eventually beat them back and retook the regions. Then another horde arrived and the same thing happened. Then another. And another.

By all rights, we should have completely recovered and been ready for the split by now. A few months ago, I had been looking forward to engaging in more inter-realm politicking and RP'ing the restoration of the Lurian Empire. It would have breathed new life into a realm that is slowly dying after the massive population loss and the loss of our territories. Now I can look forward to several months of taking regions and fighting endless hordes of monsters. It's absolutely ridiculous - especially considering we are a realm in the middle of the island and with one of the largest adventurer pops - and it's seriously sapping my enjoyment of the game. There is no activity in our realm anymore, only orders and monster reports, we can't do anything else.

These monsters are a !@#$ing farce, pardon my French. The first time we tried to increase the density, we lost the western island and there was a large exodus of players. Now we have half an island. Of course, you say, I could just move to another realm if it's too bad, but this shouldn't even have happened in the first place! We have had so many plans in Luria to make the game more fun for ourselves, but they're all impossible because of the monsters. I am not playing this game to play whack-a-mole with 10k hordes, I am playing it to RP and play against PLAYERS, and I'm just not getting that any more.

I have played this game for years and enjoyed it immensely, but if this doesn't get better I don't know if I'll be continuing.

The Rouge's purpose is to kill realms, you'll have to deal with it and survive unfortunately. People keep growing isolated, and no wars were going to begin, you're saying rouges are preventing PvP? Unfortunately, players are preventing PvP.

There is more political opportunity available now than there has been in several years. Take advantage of this or don't complain that nothing is happening... I started a giant conflict in my realm EASILY. Take the initiative if you want something to happen.

You're about to split? Have you not payed attention...? The rouges are concentrating density. The Daimons are gone, now the rouges are REALLY going to be doing their job.

You know the purpose of the rouges, attempting to go against its purpose and then complaining because you can't do it safely is like if I got angry at a bee for stinging me while I put my head in its hive.

Roleplaying / Re: Garas' backstory

I was like "Hmm, thought that screaming meant death....(few lines later) Oh there's the death  ;D"

I liked it, though the title had me expecting more to do with Gara. I feel something like "Gara's Creation" or birth or something to signify that this isn't so much all about Gara, but about Aeneas. The story was great though.

I think the rouges are actually a good thing. The purpose is to horde us together...

If a realm gets isolated, unfortunately... That's just greed keeping you there. You can walk to the other human realms and join the fun anytime. If not, you do have the choice to die there alone and join later after everything has been established... Though, it'llbe hard to influence anything then.

Internal conflicts are especially interesting. Those will increase more and more as players start compiling together. Religion cannot thrive with many small realms spread out effectively. For diplomacy becomes an issue. Meanwhile if the religions are concentrated within a few realms, I feel there's still hope to see more chance of a religious war.

It sucks that your realm is getting destroyed, but delaying it will only keep everyone in the state they're currently in. This will not inspire LESS rouges, but instead I'd personally add MORE rouges to ensure that the plan continues.

The map is so big, we really don't need all that space. Journeys to the lost land can always be a good roleplaying event realms do. It'll be like a Dystopian story.

im not talking about a situation where the to didnt start, im talking about a to in progress on top of losing a battle in the region. in the same scenario (gathering troops) one cannot recruit a unit in their capital, a situation in which one would assume raising troops from the population would be easier as there are more people in a smaller space.

recruiting men to your unit and recruiting militia are the same thing in terms of the rp world actions of your char, they are going out, finding fighting men, slapping a pike and a few coins in their hand and telling them to go fight. logically neither should be possible if one of them isn't.

there was not too long ago an interminably long thread about how bad the current reliance on militia is for the game. there was, as usual, no change that came out of it.

part of the inherent contradiction in your argument is that realms with more nobles almost always tend to be larger and wealthier realms, thus more able to afford militia and less reliant on individual nobles' units being as strong as possible, meaning lords can hoard more gold to drop militia.

the other part is that smaller realms can't raise large enough armies to compete with the massive militia forces that can be placed in even middle-wealth regions currently, and on dwi specifically they can't compete with the insane peasant hordes that get kicked up at the slightest amount of looting.

and as you are well aware my annoyance with (and awareness of) this issue stems from a battle between my smaller realm and your larger realm.

the real problem with war right now especially in dwi with the anti-looting code is that npc units play way too big of a role, consistently in favor of the wealthier, larger realm. it massively reduces the importance of which army is better managed and more coordinated, mostly all that matters is who has more gold to drop militia and not have to loot at inopportune times to keep troops in the field.

the continued ability to rely on militia as a crutch really reduces the quality of wars and further makes playing in a small or poor realm an unappealing prospect to most players, no matter how good that realm's army is.

By drop militia. Do you mean purchase or literal dropping of the militia? The literal is completely logical and is understandable... Just tell them to go charge and die and boom... You got your attacking milita.

However, purchasing I could see a bit odd... That definitely shouldn't be possible during a TO, not because it's illogical, because it's purely logical... Just seems unfair to be able to purchase reinforcements. However it is key to note that is actually not how recruiting works in his game... That's how picking up volunteers work. We don't just walk around slap the armour on a guy, we pick from training centers from a post board in the capital basically from my understanding. The readied recruits are either nearby or in the barracks awaiting deployment.

Regarding the small realm big realm idea, the small realm will likely seek support and if not, too bad if they're not strong enough... Unfortunately that's how this game was intended to work.

Regarding Swordfell v Westfold,

I tried offering a week of rebuilding... But you didn't even respond... Can't expect me to help you in any way if you won't even speak. It's both our responsibility to make the war fun, not just mine. If you want compromise, better start talking or else we simply won't know how you feel, it's truthfully that simple.

cute.

what id like to see is a system where to's succeed and fail based on the actual outcome of battles, and where the outcome of battles is based on comparable levels of coordination between the opposing armies. not a system where someone can just throw gold at a region to make up for not being able to win with their actual army.

That would give a realm with more nobles too much power. Building militia is a good way for small realms to defend against hordes and war raids...

Here's how I picture it:

Taking over a region basically means that your troops are now inside the town village or w/e, you're with the peasants. The main fortresses are usually blocked off from the peasants, so I can understand how a fortress wouldn't but under your control. While you're with the peasants, your enemy can't exactly be there because they'll die.

Meanwhile, most battles happen outside the residential area in some sort of field. When the defenders lose, they just run back to the town, starting a takeover is like walking into the town, however, the battle isn't over, jist because you've RETREATED doesn't mean you're defeated. So skirmishes commence etc., Outside the area.

You can't exactly collect taxes when you're enemy halts them from entering... Can't place militia because... Common sense. Etc... However if the takeover doesn't start, you're still in your village, you can do whatever you want.

If you're complaining that gold plays too big a role... I'm sorry, that's how economy works. More gold means you can buy and build more.

if we didnt enjoy the game on some level, we wouldn't be playing. then again, it has even more aspects of variable ratio reinforcement than most video games, so maybe we're all just addicted

It is the only conclusion, we're all addicted and can't stop. That would explain the several years of quitting and coming back of so many.

the question for you then becomes "why would dodger intentionally march his army into a battle they couldn't win?"
What that did was help me prove a duke wrong and gain even more power. I'm remembering the days when you were saying "You all just lack the fundamentals", and whatnot.  8) Swordfell is the best Fell

(Just teasing, it's a real interesting war going on indeed)

The Tamirak to Eltorak trap was a thing of beauty. A good part of my enjoyment comes from the trials & tribulations of just such a thing so I appreciate the effort Swordfell is making as an opponent. So much better from my perspective than playing whack-a-mole with monsters & undead.

Yah, I'm really trying to do more with what we have. The previous General just screamed and blamed everyone for not moving. I feel like we're doing a lot better with the "We are the Fellish, strong and proud" thing I've been boasting to everyone in realm.

Definitely not a boring place to be in Swordfell at this moment.

Course, we have a good enemy to keep us busy too!  ;D I'm sure you guys may return the favor sooner rather than later.

I'm not complaining about the game. Leave that to other people. I've been complaining about prevailing attitudes of certain player groups.

I don't think he was specifically saying you are complaining, he was saying that he liked the game a lot and he saw no reason for others to complain.  ;D

He was basically summing up his previous thread.

Bump, 'cause lookit who's winning now....

Also, Zuma Coalition going crazy?

Also, What's going on in Dwilight? Anything interesting happening non-SA/ESA related?

I have no idea what could've happened O:

They fell for a couple traps lately, so that could give the appearance of winning.

I don't know anything about Zuma or ESA vs SA quarrels.

Heh. I think people start out thinking they can do anything. Only to realize that other people got their own plans and your plan is getting in the way of theirs.

Oh so true  :'(, but this game applies a lot of real reaction. I enjoy this game so much because I can test theory's I've always questioned with real life test subjects. I'm fascinated by human nature and this is like a playground for me.

Plus ya know, the politics in this game is crazy. I've never seen such a well constructed digital society.

If you would mean, kick out of a government position, then you can use the protest options.

For other positions, there is no option yet, although knights got the 'protest options' button whenever their estate was reduced or anything. So it was definately intended they could protest their lord, or lord their duke and so on.. There was talk about implementing a broader protest functionality in the entire feudal hierarchy but until now it hasn't been implemented.

My god, please... This would be amazing. I have been fighting a ROYAL duke for the past 2 weeks... There's LITERALLY nothing we can do, specially not exilement because the ruler barely has enough honour and prestige to BE a ruler.

With other words, this was once and not a regular thing? Because then you might wait a day with sending the message, but that's it. I know no realm where you shouldn't just send everything out and go for it.

Actually it IS a regular thing in Swordfell...
